: Alarm System - Possible Fault
Hi Guys
Two questions really both related to the alarm system in my Brand Spanking New and Shinney VW EOS Sport 2L. (Sorry had to get that in. Only got in on Friday and still have to remind myself that it eventually came after a painful 18 weeks of waiting).
Anyway - Question 1 - The alarm has gone off 3 times now for no apparent reason. Wondering if there was a known fault and if anyone had any advice. I did see another thread on the alarm system but thought I would post in Technical as well to ensure read.
Question 2 - I was thinking that the interior sensors could be setting it off, thus wanted to disable. Read the manual (Well a little bit) and read that you can press the Interio AAlarm button under drivers armrest and it should turn yellow when disabled. I have pressed it and nothing appears to happen. again, any advice from the forum would be greatly appreciated guys.
Many thanks

evolvingpowercat 01-28-2008, 10:39 PM I had the EoS alarm go off once when I used my key to unlock the drivers door instead of using the unlock button on the key fob. I have always used the key fob unlock button ever since!
SiJ2000 01-29-2008, 04:56 PM My first port of call would be to check for an insect or moth trapped in the car.
Def not a mouth or fly. Too cold for this time of year. However, read on forum that someone else had similar problem and turned out to be the boot wasnt closed probably. Opened and closed it this morning and doesnt appear to have gone of since.
Maybe I was just be a little too loving towards my shinney EOS and dint want to close the boottoo hard. LOL
I will let you know if happens again.
Thanks guys

Gazzer 01-29-2008, 09:23 PM Hi
I Had The Same Problem.the Interior Sensor Was Set To High And The Sensitivity Was Reduced To Eliminate The False Alarms.
mateos 01-30-2008, 12:13 PM My alarm goes off falsely, even goes off in my garage !!
Wishful thinking. It wasnt the Boot door as it has gone off again this evening and boot hasnt been used. How annoying.
Gazzer - Maybe a silly question but when u say u had the sensitivity lowered. Did u have to get this done by the dealer or is this something I can do myself.
Many thanks Guys

Not sure if the door needs to be open but, remove key, open driver's door, little light should be red. Press button and light turns orange/yellow. If it isn't doing this then that suggests at least one problem ! I suspect the sensitivity adjustment is a dealer thing.
Gazzer 01-30-2008, 09:29 PM Hi Sean
The Interior Sensor Was Adjusted By The Dealer Under Warranty Best Of Luck
Thanks guys. Trip to the dealer it is then.
drdan 02-01-2008, 03:01 PM Coincidentally my alarm went off by itself about 5.30am this morning - although it was blowing a gale it has to be said. The alarm does go off if you open it with the key and don't put the key in the ignition within 15 secs - this is by design apparently. To press the sensor deactivate button the interior lights have to be on which I guess means either having the door open or just having turned off the ignition
janevj 02-12-2008, 12:28 PM I havent heard my alarm system.
I deliberately left my sunroof open and put my hand inside and i cannot activate the alarm system. Whats the catch !?
In some countries the alarm system is optional and not standard, is that the problem?
Other wise the better test is to wind down a window lock the car wait for the warning light to atart flashing, reach in towards the seat. That should set it off.
janevj 02-16-2008, 04:23 PM I got the alarm off button in the drivers door that lights all the time and when i press it it goes off ... so if i have that button working i should have the alarm also .. right ?
 :)
toureos 04-12-2008, 07:06 PM I also had a problem with my alarm going off at random times. I also found that turning off the internal sensors with the door switch cured it. I took the car back to the dealer and they reduced the sensitivity level of the alarm. They told me that there were three settings, 100%, 75% or 50%. They set mine to 50% and checked that it would still go off if there was movement in the car. So far (after three days) it's been OK.
Stephb 04-13-2008, 09:36 PM my car alarm has only gone off the once its parked on the driveway no wind no cats nothing around at 4:30am it went off!! i wasnt chuffed i had to go out in my pjs and dads work shoes :)

Simon68 05-07-2008, 06:18 AM We have recently purchased a new EOS (26/4/08) and are having exactly the same issues as reported in the many posts. Ours typically went off 2-4 times a day on average until the dealer made an adjustment to the sensors and now we get an activation every 15 hours+
I am currently in battle over this issue as I have been informed that VW have this fault as a known issue which has not yet got a fix available.
The issue seems to be that the sensors create a field which over time breaks out of the perimeter of the vehicle and can be activated by walking by the vehicle or even the wind. I have noticed that security lighting seems to be triggered for no reason... which does not happen when the car is in the garage.
One of the main dealers has told me that VW have told them to adjust the sensors and not to do any further work until they can find a cure.
The other has told me that they are to adjust sensors firstly and then replace the sensors and ultimately replace the alarm brains. The second dealer (supplier of vehicle) is currently trying to resolve this with the first dealer (my local VW Dealer) as they obviously don't want to do the work if they can't get paid from VW.
Having had the sensors adjusted (they said to 50%) I have found that they have actually turned the sensitivity off. The alarm will not go off at all from movement... so watch for this! (Not too sure how the insurers will re-rate this vehcile if they heard what was happening)
Such a shame.... waited a long time for delivery..... the Mrs will kill me if I have to throw it back at the dealer.
Caveat emptor.....
Helen_cambs 10-05-2008, 10:55 AM Hi - I know this is an old thread but wanted to pass on this tip.
My alarm started at 3am this morning - it has been raining hard and windy - it was going off every 5-15 minutes. Eventually at 4.15am I called VW Assistance and spoke with a technician who advised that just near the interior lights there are two grills which house the interior sensors. One side sends the signal and the other receives - he suggested I put a piece of tape to cover both grills, thus obstructing the sensor until I can get the car back to the dealer to have the sensors adjusted.
Its not an ideal solution and I'm not sure how my insurance would stand - but as a temporary solution it worked.
SiJ2000 10-06-2008, 06:43 AM Hmmm. This is very odd... Neither of my VWs have ever had a false alarm... Maybe it's just luck, or even a dirty sensor or something... I have my fans and A/C on all the time, so maybe that helps the sensors not get windescreen type mist on them or something...
What status is the fan/ac in the cars of peoples whose go off? Don't use fans or a/c perhaps? Worth finding out if there is some kind of pattern..
Never had an alarm problem and I have climate control on all the time.
Hi S666
I have had much the same fault and only when its been raining ,I have put it down to droplets of rain its been back to vw and they could not find any faults with the system

teeboy 10-07-2008, 07:30 PM Hi there - I have a 09 model EOS and have not had any issues with the alarm, so I tried it.
I left the room down in the office car park the other day, so on the way back I tried reaching to the car to see what happened.
- Lean over the drivers door and touch drivers seat.... nothing
- Wave arms around in front of steering wheel... nothing
- Lean right in so I could touch the arm rest - just as I opened the arm rest- ALARM :-)
So I think they have just set mine really low...
So next time it is sunny (Probably next June!) try it on yours - see if you can open the arm rest without the alarm going off. Would be interesting to see if those people experiencing problems with false alarms have really sensitve sensors...

sparkyt 01-31-2009, 10:32 PM HI i have an 09 eos i love in the USA so im not sure our alarms are the same the dealer claims we dont have motion sensors in the car. The alarm seems to go off for no reason and i thought it might me sensative to how its put into part with the dsg transmition again dealer claims no relation to alarm but tht is the only thing that i have nitced i did differently. i cam e to a stop in my parking space turned off the engine but didnt put in park . the i put it in park . after that the alarm would go off after a few seconds. so i had to restart the engine and move the car a bit and put in park se the brake and all was good again. did this several times but i did pu ti n park before shutting the engine down. Took back to the dealer they said they found that the car was still in the transport mode setting. what ever that means. so it has not gone off sine i hope its fixed. but i doubt it hahah. thanks for listening im new here as you might tell. tom.
funeosity 01-31-2009, 10:43 PM our alarm is always going off - especially in this cold weather. I ignore it and it stops after 2 or 3 repeats. The things still there the next day - I notice it when I go to my car.
Lopaka 02-01-2009, 03:12 AM No motion sensor for the interior in the US. I could smash the glass, kick the doors, and it would do nothing! That's ok, my 1994 BMW is just as deaf!

sparkyt 02-08-2009, 06:55 PM Hi all my alarm is still not fixed. anyone in the USA have alarm issues. its so irratating. I wouldnt care but i live in an apartment complex and park outside peoples doors so its got to be annoying to them i can even here it at times. I dont know what to do abut it but leave the car unlocked. I actually hope someone steals it hahahaa. I have the problem with the seat not moving forward and backward also but only when the car is cold or the weather . in the afternoon it works fine. or after i drive it for a half hour it works again very frustrating as the dealers dont do anything to fix it cause both problems dont happen when they have it in there shop. I think i will contact Vw next although from past experience they do little for you as well . I think this will be my last VW. I had a new beetle before this witha diesel loved the car and engine till the turbo blew at 72000 miles and i faithfully did all the services required. I kept hearing a strange noise and kept taking it back to the dealer and they kept telling me it was all normal. if the damn computer dont throw up a code they cannot fix anything any more. there are no mechanics any more. just computer jockys. hahaha oh well thats my rant. Ps i hate the way the transmission shifts after its warm . its jerky and i have taken it in for that as well. and guess what its normal it wont do it for them. I guess its me. hahaha bring back the old slush boxes. or the shift it yourself im much smoother than the computer. hahaha tom
Phillbilly 02-09-2009, 08:06 AM I had problems with the alarm on my new Eos going off for no reason, using the button in the door cured it while waiting for main dealer to take it in. They fitted a new slave unit under the back seat and said it would be OK:rolleyes: . Within 15 min of getting home the bloody alarm went off:eek: .
Later the same day I got a phone call saying that there was a modification unit for the Eos alarm which would take half an hour to fit, which I got fitted next day. The alarm has not gone off since:o
needer69 02-12-2009, 09:43 PM I have an Eos and will be 3yrs old in september, I have had battery problems that were a known fault with no recharging the battery something to do with the radio, apparently resolved in 2007. I have also had the door handle come off in my hands, but they fixed that too and advised not to pull so hard. The most recent has happened since our snow day in the UK, this has led to my boot randomly opening itself when I have stopped with the engine still on. I put the handbrake on then everytime I take the handbrake off the tailgate opens and the sign comes on, since this has happened, the alarm seems to be going off at random happened twice today outside my flat.
There are some very strange problems with the EOS, keep thinking I got the friday afternnon car, and it was only a couple of weeks old.
neh321 02-13-2009, 08:18 AM Something to do with the long history of car manufacturing in Portgual I think...
sheep69 03-03-2009, 08:00 PM me too - bought an ex-demo 4 weeks ago and alarm decides to go off, usually at 2am. May 2008 was first on road date.
Been to dealers once and had sensitivity 'adjusted' but still goes off - can anyone confirm if there is a fix for this as previously suggested in this thread, please?
ukvweosmastertec 03-12-2009, 08:52 PM there is a modified slave alarm sensor available from vw to fix random triggers
Redimps 03-18-2009, 11:22 PM I had the problem and they had a tb out which replaced the control unit under the rear seat. that worked
LateBar 03-09-2011, 12:48 PM Hi, I'm waking this thread up becasue I'm having alarm problems with my new Eos (well new to me, a 56 plate). My alarm goes off at random times. We've taken it off road onto the drive way, away from winds and it still goes off about once a day, there doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. I've taken it back to the supplying dealer (not a VW one) for a fix, but I get the impression they're not experts with the Eos.
I can't get the button in the drivers door to do anything. It stays red all the time. Should the button actually physically depress or is it just a touch button? Just read above that someone said the interior lights must be on to make this button work, is that the case? Sometimes I have had that centre light switch switched to 0, so not sure if this is a reason why I can't get the button to work?
The solution I used, as defined in the manual, to press the key fob lock button 3 times turns off the sensors, but also takes off the deadlocks, so it's not ideal, but OK for a quiet night if the car is otherwise secure and locked.
If anyone's got ideas about a solution or about that drivers door button functioning it would be appreciated. Thanks.
toureos 03-09-2011, 04:34 PM The driver's door has to be open when you press the button. It is not touch sensitive and you can feel it move in slightly. The lamp in the button changes colour when you press the button (with the door open), I think it's from red to amber.
It maybe worth asking the dealer to change the alarm sensitivity to a lower setting, but if he's not a VW dealer he probably won't know how to do it.
