Hi Everyone, I am due to pickup my EOS on Monday. It was UK dealer stock so other than cruise control I have bought the car brand new from stock.

I would like the MFD2 sat nav installed and have looked at a few nearly new units on the web. Having researched various sites it appears that manufacturer nav units have an input from the wheel, presumably to help with speed and nav accuracy.

My question to you all is:
If I remove the standard radio unit, will the MFD2 unit plug directly in its place, and are the wires already there for the motion sensors. I know I will have to fit a GPS antenna.

Has anyone done this before and if so did it work ok.

i am thinking of this too as my old eos had it
to be honest its not that good and a £100 stand alone unit will blow it away, but it does look good.
i dont think its worth more than £350-£400
anyway to answer your question yes it can be done and its very easy to do
you wont get the dashboard display though and you will have to stick the gps antenna to the windscreen
if your not in a rush i would hold on as the new touch screen model is out and alot of people are upgrading meaning there will be more MFD2's around

I have TomTom 6 on my MS Mobile phone and that works great. Doesn't look the part though and I think that when I come to sell the car I would get back the £300 approx value that I would spend. What is the dashboard display. I thought all of the Nav info was self contained on the unit. Also I antenna could be made a little discreet I feel.

Good point on waiting. The MFD3s that I have seen are still silly money.

Is is easy to take the dash apart to get to the unit's mounting screws?

cars with nav come with a larger display between the clocks that give nav directions so you wont get that
ive had mine apart a few times and it is easy, trim pops off and just 4 screws
if you find one for £300 let me know £400 plus seems the norm with a dvd disc
when i px my eos i did get a couple of quid extra for the nav but if its not factory as described probably not
i am on the fence at the moment, i really dont think the mfd2 is worth more than £300 tops in reality due to its poor performance for the times i use it
i am considering a route 66 for 79 quid and a proclip mounting instead

The MFD2 is a straight swop and will fit existing harnesses.
A GPS antenna will need to be added. OEM position is in the boot lid, but not practical to retrofit. Next best place is under dash. Antenna does need to be flat with top surface pointing to clear view of sky. Plastic dash does attenuate signal by about 5 to 10% but you probably won't notice the difference.

I don't reckon the Sat nav display on the EOS is very good at all,My Nissan had a much better display in a kind of "3D flying above the road effect" with lots of detail off to the sides. My question is: can software be loaded to improve the EOS low tech map image?

It appears that the facia surround should just pull off, but I don't want to do that if its not right as I may damage it. How have others changed radios, sat nav please.

Well for those interested I now have my Sat Nav fitted, and whilst not as good as Tom Tom, it is certainly more convenient. The facia panel just unclips (carefully) exposing the 4 screw holding in the unit. The connectors just went in easily and the GPS aeriel went in the radio slot and was placed on a ledge in front of the heater. It works fine from there.

Now for a 6 CD changer.

Can anyone tell me where VW put it as standard?

cd fits in the armrest not sure about cabling though

Got it on Ebay, £250. Practically as new. The only downside is that the only chrome is on the dials. I have seen some where the buttons are all chrome and I think that was the proper EOS one.

I found a website with a picture as to how it is fitted. Looks like I would need a different armrest. Not sure whether I could get one or indeed how much it would be if I could. Cabling should be fairly straightforward if I could route it through the tunnel.

mine had black buttons as this was standard up to 2006 then they added chrome to match the silver dash surroun
personally i prefer the black and have considered changing my surround back to black, cost is £26

meant to bid on that one :) you had it for a good price especially as you could re-sell the interface for £50
instead of a cd changer why not add a unit that would take advantage of it?
that way you could get up to 60 albums on it instead of 6
play dvd's on the nav screen even when driving
a remote control
an ipod interface
and all for £47
