: De-badged EOS
I loved the sleek lines of Codyallyn's Eos and thoughtI would have a go at removing the badges. Just used a hair dryer to get them warm, dental floss to pull the letters away, then some petrol to remove the sticky stuff and a dose of polish to finish.
Lynne 03-10-2007, 03:01 PM It looks really nice de-badged, ads an air of mystery to the car for everyone who hasn't seen them before! :D

Glad you like. That was the part of the idea for folk to ask what it is. Also its a lot easier to polish without those bits of plastic catching the polish. Then having to pick it out again.
You going to try Lynne?
SpeedyEOS 03-10-2007, 11:18 PM Here's an Mega-Badge EOS ... opposite of your goal. =)

I still think understatement is better. but I do like the spoiler.
Looks like a US model am I correct?
Lynne 03-11-2007, 10:54 PM Hey guys, i think both options look good! Not sure if I am going to try the de-badging.....going to wait and see what it looks like first and will then decide!

Hi, Lynne,
Just keep us posted, should not be long now for delivery
cheers
Lynne 03-12-2007, 11:35 PM yeah I will do! really swithering about what to do....well i suppose it is a womans parogative to keep changing her mind!!! :D
Hugh Jass 03-14-2007, 07:51 PM I like the idea of de-badging! I was going to definitely take off the dealer badge when I get my EOS. Like someone said, they come off very easy with a hair dryer. I did that on my current car (2005 Civic).
Karlos 03-14-2007, 08:13 PM I have to agree , debadging makes the rear of this car sooo much cleaner. Less than an hour after I got my Eos, the badges and dealer crap were gone. It also tickles me when people circle my car like vultures trying to figure out what it is.:D The funniest compliment I got was "Hi, I like your convertible passat."
Karlos,
Was just looking at your pics. The customisation makes the Eos look fantastic!
The chrome rims are something else.
Villy's Dad 03-18-2007, 10:57 PM Where do they sell spoilers in the US?
Is there a customization catalog available?
schoolhousefred 03-18-2007, 11:43 PM Check eBay. Go to Auto Parts and Accessories and do a word search on "eos". You will find one for $219.00 pre-painted to match. I bought one and have been very happy. Can provide further info if you need it. :)
lilj1969 03-26-2007, 08:41 AM Had my EOS since October 06, if I de-badged now do you think there would be a noticeable difference in the paint shade?

Almost certainly not!

Mine was purchased same date Oct 06 and there is not a problem as you can see.
lilj1969 03-28-2007, 05:55 AM Thanks for the feedback, I just finished removing the badges and the dealer sticker,
:D It looks great :D , very clean, people will really be wondering what my car is. Also I really like the clean look it gives.
Used a heat gun on low medium setting - the dental floss tip *thanks* and Goo-Gone to clean
Andrew 03-28-2007, 09:30 AM I like the white, do you have larger photos you can upload?
Looks great, adds to the air of mystery, especially while the Eos is sill quite rare on the roads. The dental floss is good isn't it.
Cheers

My garage is not a adequate background, I'll try to find a decent background and upload some large full car shots this weekend.

Here a couple of quick shots with my pocket camera, shows the white under natural light.
I wish I had time to get her cleaned-up first, but she still looks good, I'll get her detailed next week.
Great pics, the Eos looks very cool in white and light interior. Kind of wish I had gone for a lighter colour myself now (perhaps next time).
Just a question though, looks like you have tinted glass is that standard in the US or did you get it done yourself?
lilj1969 04-08-2007, 05:15 PM Not standard in the US, I did not do it myself either.
Dealer did it as a  Dealer add-on DIAMOND WINDOW FILM.
They over charged for it, but I had tinted windows on my last vehicle and in the Southwest Desert of Las Vegas you really need the stuff.
Plus on a white vehicle it looks fantastic:)

I agree 100% it really looks cool.
Perhaps you can let us know whether the film stands up to the constant up and down of the windows. I would have thought that it would get scratched very quickly

Great photo's - I really do think the Eos suits white and wish we'd had that colour option over here when I ordered now! I know it might be a devil to keep clean in the miserable depths of winter, but in the sunshine.....!!!

As to the question in a previous post about the window tint scratching, I've had it professionally done on my last two cars and it has never been an issue. One issue that DOES/CAN occur with window tinting on the EOS (as found out on another EOS forum), is that if the top is left down and the sun is shining, the top edge of the window acts as a magnifyer and can melt the interior of the car. One person on the other forum has a melted line of interior trim that has gone all way through the door covering.
This is the reason I've not had mine done (and we get slghtly tinted glass as standard in the UK).
Thanks for the information Dave. I don't think I'll bother, there probably isn't enough sun anyway here to make it worthwhile. Privacy be damed anyway if the tops down so are my windows.
I think I am right in thinking that UK law states that the tint can't be more than 10% or so and it must not interefere with the driver vison. So I can't see there would be much point in doing only the back quarterlights.
Perhaps someone could put me right here?
It might be useful for others here in the UK who are considering tinting

I've put after market tinted window film on my last two vehicles and after 5 years they look the same as when it was put on. They do not scratch at all from regular use of the windows; only if you have put something in the car that would rub against them.

I read the same forum, and since the tint on my EOS was placed on the EOS from the dealer, not by me aftermarket. I think I would be covered if there ever becomes a problem.
I have no idea how or what damaged that OP's interior(from the other forum), but the forum had discussions in regard to whether or not it happen as described by the OP. Also VW had asked for the damaged area to be sent in for inspection, maybe a manufacturer defect ?
Also they were discussing the type of tint used since some tints contain stronger reflective properties than others and maybe it is a isolated issue with certain tints, but not with others.
After reading the forum in question, I puposefully left my top down with windows up for almost 2 hours under clear sunny skies with temps near the 90's F, nothing bad happened ( knock on wood). But I figure if it's going to be a problem, I would rather know sooner than later.
My previous car had full tint never a had a problem with scraths, and my current EOS, the tint still looks good as new( knock on wood)

Hi Graham, to be totally technical about the amount of tint allowed in the UK the law is that the windscreen has to allow 75% of available light through and the front side windows 70% of available light.
Paul
Paul,
Many thanks for putting me right on the legal requirement.

lilj1969 04-25-2007, 04:17 AM 1st time it happen since I de-badged (as my son calls SKINNED ) my EOS.
Parked with top down, after coming out of the store I observed a guy walking around my car and looking at it very intensely. When I arrived he asked "what kind of car is this?". He did see the VW emblem but still thought it might be a BMW or MERC. We talked about the car for a little bit. The guy thinks the car is awesome, and said he really wants one.
 VW should do a little more marketing, the guy said "he had no idea VW made somthing like this, and never even considered VW for this kind of car."
pacemaker1000 04-25-2007, 05:29 PM i have debaged alot of my cars mainly to disguise the engine size, that is a merc c180 debaged could be worth £10,000 more as nothing else is diferrent on the expensive version just the engine
but was proud of my 2.0T
will probably still do it though as looks better and as most people where i live have never ebven heard of it

De-badging is very popular in Germany hence has actually been an option on some BMWs. Funny thing is, they de-badge their BIG-engines models to hide their profligacy and create a Q-car whilst we in the UK de-badge our small engined ones to hide the fact we're driving a bottom of the range model with no performance!

Is that also the reason for not quoting your engine in your signature?
(please do't take this personnally, its only an observation)
sauluk 04-28-2007, 06:48 PM Have the dealers made a mistake? Eos is a 2.0TFSI yet the badge on the back says 2.0FSI?? Its definately the turbo model, says in the manual and drives like one! Been trying to find a picture but noone will post the back of their 2.0TFSI in the UK! (In america i think it just says 2.0T)

In the US and Canada there are only two engine options ... 2.0 Turbo or 3.2 (US oly), but no FSI and no Diesel. I think in the UK you supposedly have a few more options including a 1.6 FSI, and a 2.0 FSI; hence all sorts of options for the badge plate on the back!
In the UK the only difference beteen the 2.0 FSI and the 2.0 TFSI in the badges is that the both state 2.0FSI but on the turbo version the "I" is red.
At least I think that's the case.

So many engines to choose from ... and here we have one only .... the 2.0 T! And only one special pack ... the Sport edition, but it includes your winter accesories, auto dual climate, leather upholstery, leather steering wheel, computer, radio upgrade, 6 cd changer built in to dash, auto-dim rear view mirror, home-link, electric seat adjustment, auto-off headlights, and stiffer suspension.
sauluk 04-28-2007, 10:25 PM Ah that makes sense as the 'I' is red, thats a bit of a (too) subtle difference isnt it! only the owners would know about whats under the hood, mind you most people dont even know what the model is! schoolhousefred we do have the 3.2 V6 over here aswell.

I noticed that when I checked VW's UK web site ... all the way from a 1.6 to a 3.2 plus diesel! I suspect Canada will add 3.2 next year .. already have one in wife's my Passat 4Motion (she inherited it when I got the EOS) . Diesel is temporarily unavailable in North America until new low emission engine is introduced by VW in the next year or so.
sauluk 04-28-2007, 11:18 PM I seem to remember that the reason that you do not have the diesel engine in north america is down to poor standard diesel fuel, diesel in the EU has to meet certain levels of quality since 1999 whereas in USA it doesn't. (perhaps this means it gives off high emmissions and or may damage engine parts) I may have read it somewhere on this forum if someone can remember where?

You are partly correct ... and yes, there was something here. I believe US standards have changed somewhat which has allowed re-engineering of new VW engines to work with new standards for diesel fuel. VW will have this engine ready for North American market in the next year. In the meantime, they stockpiled 2006 production of the old engine and did not produce any 2007 diesel models for North America! They probably could have done it earlier for Canada, but our market, by itself, is not big enough to suppport the development costs. Diesel has never been nearly as popular in North America because gas is relatively less expensive than in UK or Europe ... gas is about $3.00 US/Imperial Gallon in the US and about 20% more here in Canada. There is a post here from SpeedyEOS in mid-March which explains ... if you use the "search" function at the top of the page with the word "emission" you should find his post. Sorry to be so long winded!

sauluk 04-29-2007, 09:43 PM Yeh same so that must just be how they are over here. I think its a bit too subtle to be honest! its like with the old honda civic type-r, distinguished by a red honda badge on the front, everything else you can pretty much get on a sport!
neh321 04-30-2007, 09:26 AM Is that also the reason for not quoting your engine in your signature?
(please do't take this personnally, its only an observation)
Can't remember what's in my signature but I'll have a look and if my engine's not included then I'll put it in (it's a 2.0 T-FSI petrol turbo - 197 bhp)
Subtlety has been used by VW for a long time e.g. on the Passat
1.9 tdi 90 was badged TDI all in black
1.9 tdi 110 and 115 were badged TDI with the I in red
1.9 tdi 130 is badged TDI with the D and the I in red!
A colleague many years ago was upset when his 1.8T Golf came back from a bodyshop with an all silver GTI logo instead of the turbo version which had a red I!

pacemaker1000 04-30-2007, 10:53 PM never mind the red I's or T's

can we have a vote on it guys n galls
i am still on the fence. was all ready to take em off tonight till wife said she prefered them on, case anyone thought it was a golf  , but what does she know :D

Yes, I always smile when I see a de-badged premium car, usually a BMW, because when I see one I usually check the downward-pointing exhaust pipes and see that they're hiding the fact that its a diesel [even though diesels are trendy now!!] - even though its obvious!
Paul:cool:
Normally the de-badged ones have large alloys (pretending to have a big engine) but weedy exhausts - the tell tale of the small engine.
pacemaker1000 05-05-2007, 01:18 PM still on the fence about taking em off
if car was silver then would have removed straight away but on a black one it sort of adds a bit of colour
pacemaker1000 05-05-2007, 06:10 PM done!
after a wash the badges really get in the way so off they came
Get the badges off and confuse other drivers when you zip past them at the lights.

I was very disappointed that they're not chrome but seem to be some kind of galvanised steel.
I used an Autoglym metal polish. It cleans them but they still don't shine nicely like chrome ones would!
Try a tube of Autosol I have mine shining almost like chrome now. I think that it's probably the best polish around.

Totally agree with victor, I was thinking about removing the badges from mine until I reregistered mine P 20 EOS, then decided the reg wouldnt mean anything if nobody knew what the car was.

Hi david, I went for P 20 EOS because the p is for my first name and the 20 for 2.0 litre and I dont have to tell you what eos is for.

i used braso in the end
but the constant blackening annoys me, is it normal
dndlion i like your skinned car and dont agree with the other comments, it looks alot cleaner
Gavster 06-05-2007, 06:45 PM I love the debadged look and am 95% sure I will take ours off. In fact, I think I'll ask the dealer to do it before I take delivery.
I just get a bit of soot around the rims of the exhausts but it just wipes off with a tissue. I have tried most types of metal polish in the past and the best is Autosol cream. (Its also very good for removing minor scratches on plastics like mobile phone displays and plastic watch glasses.)The more polished the pipes are the easier that soot deposit is to remove. I must be a real sad person!!!!

old git 06-21-2007, 06:45 PM You know something schoolhousefred? The cost of petrol in the UK is close to $10 a gallon. old git 06-21-2007, 06:48 PM Hey, what about a badge to cover the badge, you know, the 'BIG' VW badge, maybe a picture or just an artistically enhanced version of 'EOS' perhaps or something..... anybody else suffer with this idea or suggestions even (as long as it's not to visit a phsychiatrist)
You could try this (I hav'nt yet)

Hi There,
Actually I'm in Canada, not US so we work on litre system not gallons. Gas here is about 20% more than US but still way less than you pay. Americans should be paying a lot more ... we are very lucky in Canada, in that we have 2nd largest reserves in the world (behind Saudi Arabia) but tax it heavily to protect for the future and to help finance some of our social systems including universal health care. I don't feel smug, just fortunate to be a Canadian! Cheers!

What is your point to this message? I don't quite get it? Please explain; thanks.
De-baged is nice..I would also do this.. change the VB badges to blue, if we can.....
On our old 2000 Beetle the dealer install the blue European VW logos, the car was in the showroom and the bug being silver it stood out with them. They were blue vs black behind the chrome VW. They made the car so different and got lots of complements. I have been looking online for them for the Eos. Front, Rear and inside the rims? Does anyone know where I can get them? I hate to paint mine and mess them up?
old git 06-22-2007, 07:46 AM Schoolhouse:- The point is simple, you get your cars for as many dollar as we do pounds, at present thats equivalent to half price - your petrol costs are so low you would think that it had gone out of fashion, so the point is....... if you didnt feel too good about costs in the first place this information should make you feel REAL GOOD (not you personally of course, all Americans and Canadians)
