Does anyone know if there is a way that the daytime running lights can be modified. I'm wondering if it is possible to have the daytime running lights ONLY be the smaller rectangular light just to the middle of the main headlamp. I guess there are two or three bulbs in there and one is obviously the high beam. It seems a bit wasteful to be running the main headlamp all the time and I'd think that there would still be benefit of being visible with just that smaller lamp on (which I think is on anyway, no?)

There is tool called VAG-COM made by a company called Ross-Tech. It is used for VW maintenance and to change module options. The Low Beam DRL can be totally turned off. DRL for Fog Lamps can be independently turned on, that is what I am using for DRLs now instead of low beams. The VAG-COM can't make the middle bulbs in the headlight assemblies the DRLs.

Randy,
Do you by chance have a photo of what the DRL Fog Lamps look like on your car. I'm curious how it looks to on-comers with fogs on and no other front lighting. Sounds like a potentially good option though to save the front main headlamp bulbs.

Do you still leave the switch on AUTO and it then lights up the main headlamps when needed automatically?

Made the change to fog lamps as DRLs. In case anyone else is curious as to how it looks, there's a photo in the photo tab at the top left of the screen. I like the change. http://www.vweosclub.com/photos/index.php?n=232

I want to make this change or add an LED strip and set that as my DRL but I need to find someone with vag-com or try and convince my dealer to do it.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried putting these 9006 LED bulbs in their fog light position.

or if anyone has used anything similar?????

I've made my fogs into the DRLs and now wondering if I can make them LED instead of halogen. ..... have been bit by the Audi LED bug but don't want to add on any more light strips.

The VW lighting control module senses current and you will get an annoying burnt out light indicator on your dash if you replace standard bulbs with LED bulbs. Only workaround is to put resistors in parallel with the LED bulbs to draw enough current to be above the minimum that the module wants to see to sense a good filament bulb.

I just saw some LED fog light assemblies on TMtuning.com.
Interesing possibility...............

The problems you indicate can be eliminated with a Ross-Tech vag-com mod.

I am new to the EOS Group... its actually my wifes. And I have already hit road blocks in trying to get all of her lights converted to LED and HID. So far I have been able to change all the interior lights to 6000k LEDs without the computer getting over zealous. But the license plate light has fought me and the 9006K hid fog light kit I installed worked at first, then as soon as the car was turned on completely, the module cut power to them.

Looking for more details on the vag com module, what have you had experience with. Does anyone know of aftermarket bi-xenon kits that are plug and play?

I use my fog lights with standard 50 watt halogen bulbs for DRL, I own a VAG-COM so was able to change the settings myself. Dealers won't do it. Some independent garages can and will. Or you can post your location and see if a fellow enthusiast with a VAG-COM nearby is willing to help you.

I have replaced my high beams with GE Silverstar Ultra 50W halogen bulbs. I changed out my low beams to 35 Watt 5000K HID bulbs. I had major problems with DIY HID which I have finally solved. I now drive the ballasts directly off fused 12V battery with relays. The relays are driven by the low beam lines that used to go to the bulbs directly. The relays alone don't draw enough to keep the bulb out fault from being detected. My answer was to use 12V rope lighting under the car 1/2 the rope being driven by each low beam line to draw enough current to keep the fault away. Plus I have a subtle purple glow under the car when the lights are on which I like. Here is my post on my project. http://www.vweosclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4218
