Anybody on here know if you can take a crash helmet on as hand luggage from Heathrow nowadays? Don't want to risk them being 'thrown' in the hold as any damage to them makes them usless thereafter. Even if the relevant airline says they are ok with it, chances are its down to BAA security. Just wondered if anyone has tried lately. Any info appreciated.

With number of crashes I've read about recently, I'd be inclined to wear it.;)

Hi Gary,

I think it may have to be checked in as all hand luggage has to fit in a certain xyz package size. Never tried to hand carry a crash helmet however I had to change my hand luggage when the new luggage size laws came into force a couple of years back.

I did wonder what the reaction would be if I wore it through customs/security! The annoying thing is we saw a couple in departures last September both carrying their helmets as hand luggage but when I rang BAA yesterday they said 'no way'. So now it looks like we will have to find appropriate containers for them to go in the hold ! More expense.

Talking with total naivety on the subject here but can you not just hire helmets when you get to wherever you are going to? Would it be cheaper? :o sorry I really know nothing about helmets! :p

lol!! maybe if the helmets had inserts that fit you correctly you could take them out and use them in a rented helmet...just a thought

I tend to think that helments would be a bit like underpants - you wouldn't want to put one on after someone you don't know had been wearing it first.

I know that this is in really bad taste, and David the super moderator is likely to tell me off or delete this, but " you would have to be a real d... h... to wear one of those.":D

Nice one geoffa1.
We have hired them before (helmets that is) and they are sanitized each time (I hope) but we have decided to go the whole hog and buy all our own gear for the future. We snowmobile by the way, its not for motorbiking. Its just finding something that will protect them from any impact when they are flung (sorry put) into the hold of a plane each time. Helmets are only ment to withstand 1 major impact per lifetime.

I don't see why you couldn't take them as hand luggage. We were skiing at half term and hubby and I both take our ski boots as hand luggage. I just have to make sure that my handbag will also fit in the boot bag for going through security as you are only supposed to have one bag per person.

Incidentally I will be getting a helmet before we ski next time and I'll be putting that in the boot bag too! (I'd already decided to get one before poor Natasha Richardson :( )

Hi
I'd imagine helmets may be considered as a hand-weapon, since a hit with one can easily knock someone down!
For detailed information, you should visit BA or BAA web site, they have loads of details on what is allowed or not and it's regularly updated.

Thanks Fred but I have already check with BAA and been told 'no way' by them. I also have to consider Canadian and American airport authorities too!

Hi Sue, that's interesting. I'm glad your getting yourself a helmet for future. Is your 'boot bag' just an ordinary bag or specific for your needs? Could you pm me with info please. And where did you fly out from?

Well guess what folks. The wife rang BAA again yesterday and got a different 'operative' who went and asked the day's duty security manager who said 'no problem' with taking helmet as hand luggage as long as it fitted within the size conditions for hand luggage. Asked for that in writing but told no can do as that could change on the actual day of travel and that day's duty manager! Helpful or what!
