: Group Test Focus CC v Eos TDI v Astra TwinTop
neh321 03-30-2007, 01:09 PM Anyone read this week's Auto Express?
They do a comparative test of the new Ford Focus CC, The Vauxhall Astra TwinTop and an Eos 2.0 TDCI (diesel versions apart from the Vauxhall).
In the sum-up (headed "Oh dear, Ford."!) they say:
"(the Astra) is a decent package. Yet it's not good enough to prevent the VW Eos taking an easy win. Although more expensive, it's the best to look at and be seen in. The time, money and effort VW has spent to get the Eos right has certainly paid off."
The Eos comes 1st, Astra 2nd and Focus 3rd.
In the final positions they say:
"Due to its coarse diesel, the Eos isn't at its best here, yet its unique looks distance it from the Golf, and the brilliant roof is sure to win admirers. It's the most desirable car here by a big margin."
Praise indeed!

Yep, reinforces the other reports all saying the same thing and gives us all confidence that we've done the right thing, as though we need it!!. Though personally I reiterate that from a 'car brand' perspective rather than 'CC' comparison the Eos is into Merc/BMW/Audi territory in terms of winning cutomers from drivers of these cars.

But if you want the counter-argument (or just a good laugh) try reading the Eos report at the following website address:

It's written by a guy who probably didn't drive it and wouldn't recognise a good car if it ran over him!
I think when these reviewers get their hands on one for review it tends to be top of the range. The Belfast Telegraph one is the 3.2l version, more than once has the same type of review afflicted a whole range of models. Perhaps its the enginge size and cost that makes the reviewers expect more, they should try the 2.0TFSI it's the convertible Golf GTi, its a brilliant combination (I love it).;) Performace and style, you can't beat it!
A fair comparison now as Paul says is the Audi/ Merc/BMW stable. In my and I'm sure everyone else on this forum. The Eos is King of the folding hard tops:D

Cor - he doesn't like VW much does he?
"The other problem is this car’s badge. Not the one that says Eos (although that does inconveniently recall a range of Japanese cameras), but the one that reads VW. Volkswagens are the automotive equivalent of Y-fronts – ubiquitous and dependable – but they don’t cut much of a dash."
And
"...........the Verdict hasn’t hesitated in the past to press the merits of Skodas over those of more expensive but mechanically similar VW sis-ter models; so why not make the same case for the Eos over the TT? Because at this level, looks, style and badges count in a way that they don’t in the case of family cars – it’s as simple as that."
So - he's a badge snob who sees VW as neither a 'functional' Skoda nor a trendy Audrey, so just doesn't get it. He didn't really 'diss' the car - as you say, he doesn't appear to have driven it!!
Ah well, we don't want to appeal to the 'hoi polloi' do we! I'm rather glad he isn't a fan, it might lower the tone of our club, don'cha know old boy!

Quite. On second thoughts I think I'll substitute the word 'guy' for 'eejit'!
