Thought some members might like to see a highway crash test video of the new EOS on file at YouTube. No official results yet, but I am sure they will follow. Breaks my heart to see a beautiful, brand new EOS run straight into a wall at 40 mph!

I must agree with you, It does break your heart to see one demolished like that. It does however look as though the occupants are well protected and the car absorbed the impact well. I expect a good safety score but we have to wait and see.

I just wonder if having the roof up would make any significant difference to passenger safety?

I'm no expert but I think the big factor is how much energy is absorbed by the front of the car during impact. The more that it collapses, in a controlled manner, the less impact is transferred to the occupants. Then, of course, there is the issue of air bags, front and side, to prevent impact with hard parts. VW products have in recent years scored very well in the crash test, so I suspect the EOS which is built on the same frame as other models will also perform well. If you are interested, Consumers Reports maintains a summary and rating of all autos tested. As yet, nothing is posted for the EOS.

I think it held up pretty well...makes me feel safer driving it.

Looks like it holds up well - hope I never have to do that for real though.

Here's some links to the EuroNCAP crash test site which you may find interesting:

Crash test images - scroll down to 31 Jan 2007 and the Eos is there.

Very interesting. Overall, a good score, but sounds llike there may be an issue of the roof staying in position if impacted from the side. Think I'll do my best to make sure I have no reason to test it!

The crash video is good viewing - in a normal saloon the energy from any frontal impact is designed to be absorbed by the body shell, of which the roof is integral. In a coupe the absence of a fixed roof means the rest of the body must be significantly 'beefed up' to compensate - from the looks of this VW have produced an extremely tough little car - note the very visible Side Impact Bars - use once then discard!

I for one feel better and safer for seeing this, thanks for the post!

Thanks for the Euro information, it makes interesting reading, seems that the Megane CC is top with 5 stars (pity about the rest of the car though.). All the other CC's are similar with 4 stars so it seems the EOS is up there with the others as far as safety is concerned

Link doesn't work anymore :( If you have a copy of the video can someone upload it to www.sporttuned.com (http://www.sporttuned.com)? I'd like to see it.

Andrew .. go to YouTube and do word search on vw eos and you will find it. Unfortunately, YouTube does not permit downloading and all videos are left on their site.

I apologize Andrew .... i went back to the You Tube site, and it appears whoever put the video up in the first place has now withdrawn it; so it is no longer available. Could be it was issued without approval of Highway Safety Group? Will keep watching to see if it appears on their web site or through Consumer Reports. Sorry for the inconvenience!
