I just picked up my new EOS (09 Komfort) and am breaking it in. On all my previous new cars I usually changed the oil at 1000 miles to remove any metal particles from the break in. My car comes withe the 3 year free scheduled maintenance, however the first oil change is at 10,000 miles.

Should I do as I normally do and change it at 1000 or wait for the scheduled 10,000 miles?

We'll be reaching 1K miles on our new Eos soon, and I plan on changing the oil when it does. Already ordered the Pento 5W40, and bought a filter from the dealer the other day.

It's probably overkill, but I've done a "post-break-in" oil change on all my other new vehicles, and I've never had lubrication-related engine problems. I figure why not drop the $50 on parts and do it on the VW? I'm still debating whether to do another change before the freebie 10K service. Overkill, again, but call me old school - I'm not comfortable going so many miles between changes. It also gives me an excuse to putter around the garage on a Saturday morning and listen to "Car Talk".

Lucid, you and I seem to be of a like mind. I appreciate the quality of synthetic oil, but really feel that a change after break in is important. If I don't see alot of metal in the drained oil I'll go to 10,000 before the next change, if I do I'll change again after 2,500.

If your engine is TDI, then filling in after a check every ~3000 miles should be enough to keep your engine clean and healthy until your first scheduled maintenance (which may occur before you reach the planned mileage for the check... Mine started calling for maintenance at ~22'000kms vs planned 30'000 ; it all depends on your driving style..)

Mine is on the Long Life Service routine with up to 20K Miles between services and the 1st service was at 18,000.

Like you, always expected there to be an interim "running in" service, but was not required, though also a bit suspicious of the long initial service interval.
