: ...what next
ddlweb 08-13-2009, 06:17 PM So I've had my EOS for just over two years, and replacement is looking like a good idea.
I've absolutely loved owning it and it has been an awesome car but I just fancy something new.
Around the same price bracket (maybe plus or minus £5k.)
Suggestions...?
Darren 08-13-2009, 08:42 PM A 2009 or 2010 Eos?
Blessed_Badger 08-13-2009, 10:04 PM A 2009 or 2010 Eos?
Couldn't agree more. I've been driving 12 years and had 14 cars!!!! The Eos (which I've now had nearly 12 months (14 months is my record (not due to liking the car in question but to severe negative equity (Fiat Stilo Abarth:( !))) is the only one that I've really fallen in love with - the others have been replaced as quickly as i could afford to! My Eos has everything I could possibly need! Convertible, sunroof, leather, Sat Nav, 4 decent seats (did love my MR2 and MX5 though!), a fair sized boot, decent'ish' fuel consumption, a peach of an engine etc. etc.
It's going to be very hard to replace - as the Eos was first released in 2006 when I come to replace mine in late 2010 I'm going to be worried if I get another Eos it will soon be replaced by a newer model. So.... my only option is to save up for and get an (over-priced but nice) BMW 3 Series convertible.
There are simply no other (as far as I'm aware (by all means please correct me on this and help out!)) decent 4 seater folding hardtops about. Possibly the Volvo C70?? The A4 is very nice - but canvas roof! Astra and Focus CC's are a definate no, as is the Renault and Peugeot.
Sorry to ramble on but I reckon my choice would be either a new Eos or a 3 series convertible!:D :)
evolvingpowercat 08-13-2009, 10:10 PM You said "same price" IMO there is nothing better than the Eos for the money for a hardtop convertible with sun roof.
Now if you have more money to spend then drive the Audi hardtop convertible and the Mercedes hardtop convertible.

Depends if a convertible is vital or not?
You already have the best one in the price range you mention so you couldn't improve on it.
Porsche Boxster is the best (but a bit more expensive) if you can manage with only 2 seats.
When my Eos goes (possibly next year) I'll be looking at an Audi A5.
nail-z-gull 08-14-2009, 03:10 PM I've found myself browsing the Alfa Romeo website recently - I do love the Alfa Spider, but I still need 4 seats. If I had to get a new car tomorrow, it would be another EOS.
If I had the Alfa, I'd need a second car for shipping the Dog about. That seems a bit excessive.
SiJ2000 08-14-2009, 05:48 PM I quite like the Scirocco if I didn't get another convertible...
Another EOS is probably the best option all things considered!
ddlweb 08-14-2009, 10:19 PM Yeah I get what you're saying but what would be the point in getting a new car if it is exactly the same as the last one. I mean, if they'd updated the Eos I'd be first in line but otherwise I may as well stick with what I have..
Don't get me wrong, I adorre the Eos. I'm probably trying to be a bit provocative to see what people really think. The convertible thing would be missed but a change is as good as a rest...
A5 and Scirocco both excellent suggestionh. As we're expecting in Feb maybe A5 is a better one but having driven the Scirocco I must say it is incredibly compelling. What about a 3 series coupe? Alfa Brera? Passat CC (or is that a bit boring?) Lexus IS? Laguna Coupe? Come on guys, think a bit harder!!
neh321 08-17-2009, 08:18 AM BMW 3-series cabrio would be a good choice (rather than the coupe as you're obviously a drop-top fan).
You get terrific dynamics, great quality, still have a hardtop convertible with 4 seats, and not a bad looking car either. It's even within your price range..
Try one!
Doolallygirl 08-17-2009, 08:24 AM As you are in Essex should your next choice be a clapped out old Escort Cabriolet??! ;) No better convertable surely?!?! :p

Only if it's a "she" Doolallygirl! Then it MUST be white!

Which Audi hardtop convertible did you have in mind 'cos in Europe there isn't one?!
Z-man 08-19-2009, 02:27 PM Whoa - two years and the car's already 'boring' for you?
12 cars in 14 years?
You folks must be making a pretty penny to manage such diversity in cars (or are in some serious financial troubles....)
Mrs. Z-man and I try to keep our cars 5+ years. I kept my 1995 Subaru Legacy for 13 years and 194,000 miles.
Once a car is paid off (3-5 years, depending on the length of a loan), every month you own that car is like putting money in your pocket.
A counterpoint is that older cars tend to cost more money in upkeep. Yes, there is a point where maintaning a used car is more expensive than getting a new car. But that point in time is longer than you think, especially with modern, reliable cars. Owning a car and keeping it for 10 years / 200,000 miles is very doable.
The EOS is a very modern, functional car with quite a bit of character. Unless your car is a lemon, it simply isn't cost effective to replace it after only two years of ownership.
Just my $0.42,
-Z-man.
Lucid Nonsense 08-19-2009, 03:24 PM The C70 was a very close second to the Eos when Mrs. Nonsense and I were shopping for convertibles, and it's within the OP's £5k +/-. Gorgeous interior and available manual transmission, but no sunroof and the trunk isn't as practical as the Eos'. There also doesn't seem to be much maintenance/upgrade information out there on the intarwebs for newer Volvos - with VWs there's plenty.
Like Z-man, we tend to hang onto vehicles. I've had my CRX for 23 years, and the Dakota for 14. The only reason we sold my wife's 7-yr old Sebring convertible so "soon" for the Eos was that we were getting tired of expensive fixes - a bad throwout bearing at a mere 60k miles, for example. Plus, catastrophic failure of the dreaded Mopar 2.7L V6 was always looming.
neh321 08-19-2009, 03:28 PM ,it simply isn't cost effective to replace it after only two years of ownership.
Buying a car is never really very cost-effective Z-man! Plenty of people like to just have a change and certainly if I could afford to I would probably change my car every year too. As it is I can't so keep them about 4 years.
ddlweb 08-23-2009, 11:39 AM Agreed replacing the car isn't cost effective but I work hard, get paid well and if I can afford to do it why the heck not!
Happy not to have a convertible (although I haveloved it) - I'm going to look at the following cars
- Audi A5
- 3 Series Coupe (and convertible)
- X1
I'll report back!
Janizary 08-26-2009, 08:38 PM What about the 1'er coupe or convertible? I think you have a load more flavors over there than we have in the US (Only 128i and 135i coupe/soft-top convert). I'm still eyeing a 135i for my next DD.
Though the new mini coupe concept that debuts at the Frankfurt Motor show really looks nice! (Even if it is all just 'cosmetic').
ddlweb 08-27-2009, 09:04 PM Was actually thinking about the 1 series M Sport Jani - will be test driving it in a couple of weeks...
Tintin 08-27-2009, 11:23 PM What about the new Mini Coupé concept, check it out:

ddlweb 08-29-2009, 09:19 PM Spent the day today at Brooklands and Mercedes World - would recommend it for everyone - and now the C class has reared its not so ugly head...
Not that I especialy like it, yet as I had considered an IS220d prior to falling for my EOS 2 years ago, I recently saw that Lexus is releasing their own convertible.. By all means a nice car (comfort, V6 engine, lots of goodies..), yet at comparable feature level, it retails for 10'000 EUROS more than the EOS...
Now Ferrari has the new California... another coupe/convertible ;-)

Now you're talking! :)
Have you driven the C63 AMG? 451hp = demonic power!
