: Leaky EOS
daninseattle 04-24-2007, 06:33 PM Hello fellow EOS owners. I've took possession of my EOS on April 6th. It was a great day in Seattle. Freaky warm at 80 degrees. Things were off to a great start with my new car. However, the next morning things took a decided downturn. The darn thing leaked. It wasn't raining but there was heavy condensation on the roof, which leaked into the car when I stopped at an intersection. I took it to the dealership and they had it for 10 days. I got it back and everyone was hopeful. However, this morning, when it was raining, a few drops got in on the right and left where the top comes forward to meet with the windshield. The dealer swears he has heard of no other leaking problems. Has anyone has a leak problem and if so were you able to resolve it? Thanks.
It may be more than just the seals so your dealer will have to check for any other defects but I suspect its a lubrication problem.
Get your dealer to lubricate all your seals with Krytox, that normally clears up the problems.
You can do it yourself but the stuff is expensive. Check out the drip, drip, drip thread for more info.
LAEOSGIRL 04-24-2007, 11:55 PM We got a heavy soaking on Friday last week and that was the first significant rain since i picked up my car on January 1st. It seemed as if there was leaking, but it was raining so hard, i am not sure if this was water that was on the door jamb as i got in. i will keep you posted.
daninseattle 05-15-2007, 12:52 AM Hello LA eos girl. Any developments in the leaking department since your last message. I took my through a car wash and it leaked again. For those reading new, the leak is in the front left. I think they call it the A pillar.
Dan Fraleigh 06-02-2007, 08:33 PM Hi - just to let you know that the lubrication of all seals is essential - my dealership - Leavens Motors in London, Ontario, Canada has offered free of charge to do this for me as long as I own the car. I did have minor leaks that have now ceased. Also, be sure to check that your seals where the front window goes into the seal where the side mirrors are located are in line and not tugged back and krinkled in by the window. Lubrication and a small nudging by a thin credit card or gym card will bring the seals flat to the window - after a while they seem to naturally find their place and stay flat. Good luck. The hassle is worth it for the pleasure of this car.
daninseattle 07-05-2007, 03:18 PM I just wanted to update everyone on my leaky Eros. After three attempts it appears my dealer has the problem all but licked. I drove the car in light or medium rain several times without a single drop. I was very relieved. I say "all but licked" because while driving in a downpour recently, there was a single drop that came in. Still, that rainstorm was highly unusual in that it was very strong and lasted for 15 minutes. We get a lot of light rain in Seattle, but downpours usually last a minute or two at most.
The dealer said the answer was in the wind deflector. Apparently it was pinching the weatherstripping.
By the way, my car also had an annoying rattle, which they were also to able to eliminate. Good job Carter VW!

Well, I can't even get my dealer to commit to providing the Krytox seal lube as a billable service. I did request it be done just before delivery of my new car, to which they agreed -- after that, I just don't know.
Up til now, they have been an excellent dealership; still I can't imagine they would be swayed by what a dealership is doing outside of the good old USA. I suppose I could conduct a survey of the local competition . . .
No, I will lay low until I inquire again at my Cabrio's next oil change. :) :) :)

Hi Roberta,
I have already sent my dealer a copy of Dan's comment by email. Don't think he will agree, but worth a try. Maybe I'll at least get free Krytox. He has been very good so far! I've already suggested he give every new owner a bottle with the car when it is delivered and then show them how to apply. I believe he now does that.
Cheers!
nail-z-gull 07-17-2007, 08:49 AM I got my first leak this morning. A deluge of rain fell as the sky turned black, and a dozen or so drips had landed on the passenger seat.
Ironic really, as I ordered some Krytox yesterday as the seals were getting a little creaky.
Good luck with the application, use it sparingly though. The suggestion of applying every 3 or 4 months seems like a good idea to me, prevention being better than cure. Also its gets rid of the annoying creaks from the top of the windscreen.
Best of luck
michaelr 07-20-2007, 02:45 AM Hi All
I found this on the web. It's a pretty comprehensive set of instructions on how to lubricate the roof seals on your Eos.
http://www.golden-hind.com/eos/EOS_ROOF_SEALS.pdf
Hope it works for you
Gavster 07-20-2007, 07:26 AM Wow - that's going to be very useful - thanks
Thanks Michael,
Going to have to do mine soon. I've had her for 2 months now and in the sun down here the seals seem to be drying out.
Happy EDAs,
Jim.
ddlweb 07-24-2007, 08:20 AM Well after the deluge we had yesterday I'm happy to say mine isn't leaking. Will definitely lubricate the seals regularly though as it makes sense.
The only thing that is a touch annoying is the amount of water which comes in to the car when you open the door, as a result of the lack of fram above the window. Understandable given the type of car we have, but annoying when your suit trouser leg gets soaked!!!
Must admit, the lack of sills on the roof does mean that you always get dripped on. I think every one will agree that its a small price to pay for the ability to remove the roof. However swmbo probably won't agree with me.
