: Welcome back?!!
LateBar 12-01-2009, 09:24 AM It works! The site address redirected me to GoDaddy web domains site from Saturday to today. I thought they'd pinched the site address and were holding our site moderators hostage!!
Looks to be back working now. Good news.
It's running very slow though.
neh321 12-01-2009, 09:26 AM Yes, same here!
And it was totally impossible to access this site from the GoDaddy hi-jackers.
Now I'm back in but there seem to be very few 'New Posts' (only 3, whereas usually after a weekend there are 20/25). Wonder what's happened to them. They may be there but need to be looked for.
nail-z-gull 12-01-2009, 10:09 AM The domain expired but has since been renewed. No hi-jackers, just an administrative oversight I expect.
NinjaDonkey 12-01-2009, 10:19 AM No-one had access to the site, so no-one would have posted - that's why there are no "new posts" from the weekend :)
SiJ2000 12-01-2009, 12:25 PM I could see it was reserved, so must have expired... Hence the holding page!!
If it became available, I would have just bought it and got something back online!

What a hero!! lol :D so glad we are all back - I was devastated at the thought of having nobody to complain about my Eos to! :)

Yes - I thought that after I had written my above post!
SiJ2000 12-01-2009, 02:38 PM DLG: Ya so funny!!!! I could help you fix it if you could ever find your way to a meet!!
Doolallygirl 12-01-2009, 03:13 PM DLG: Ya so funny!!!!
Right back at ya! lol :D
Christmas is coming and so is my sat nav so it won't be long until I track you all down!! ;)
I missed the site as well, great its back for my daily fix of EOS trivia and info.

My first reaction was that the site had been hacked by certain members from the former Russian Federation that I had banned recently for providing false/insufficient information when registering. I would make a lousy hostage anyway - no prospect of a ransom from my family under any circumstances :o .
However, the circumstances merit some advice regarding situations like this when you are unexpectedly redirected to another site or webpage.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU CLICK ON ANY OF THE LINKS DISPLAYED ON THE REDIRECTED SITE AS THESE ARE OFTEN USED BY HACKERS TO INSTALL MALICIOUS SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER. THE ONLY EXCEPTION BEING YOU HAVE THE NECESSARY EXPERTISE, EXPERIENCE AND EQUIPMENT TO PROTECT YOUR EVERYDAY COMPUTER IN THE EVENT THE LINK IS MALICIOUS.
SiJ2000 12-02-2009, 07:51 AM Before everyone gets too excited, the site was not hacked! I imagine that the renewal for the domain was not paid in time, therefore the supplier of the domain (the company the registratnt used to register it) put up a holding page on it until the bill was settled...
Generally sites can't just get hacked unless they are running old versions of software with some kind of vulnerability.
Secondly, no one would hack an EOS club site! What's the point... Hackers, political or otherwise, are only interested in hacking sites which are high profile and have a lot of visitors!!! Despite how much we love this site, it doesn't fit into either category!!!

With due respect this is no longer the case as detailed in the following extract from an article concerning redirection of a major Oz electronic retailer's webpage:
Security researchers say cyber criminals are now increasingly targeting legitimate websites as punters become more wary of surfing to unknown parts of the web.
Paul Ducklin, head of technology at Sophos, said one of the most common methods of placing malware on reputable sites was by infiltrating the networks used to sell advertising on the sites, or buying ads on the sites directly.
"Instead of hacking the site directly using a technical attack, they hack the site indirectly by social engineering - for example, by pretending to represent a potential major advertiser, agreeing to terms for a series of paid ads and then injecting the malware into the ads they have 'bought'," he said.
In September, visitors to The New York Times website were infected with malicious content after hackers managed to buy advertising space directly from the newspaper itself.
As a member of Whirlpool said in response to the attacks on Overclockers and JB Hi-Fi: "Some people think that they are safe if they don't visit any dodgy sites and don't need anti-virus. This sort of thing proves otherwise, that even reputable sites can be compromised and end up infecting your PC."

However it wasn't hacked in this instance was it? The registered owner of the domain name just got slack in topping up the licence to the name right??!

In this case, it was simply a case of not paying the renewal fee in good time.
You can generally check by doing a WHOIS lookup - which I did when the site was unavailable earlier this week. The domain expired on 27th November, at which time the 'registrar' switches the site to a holding page until the owner chooses to renew, or not. In this case, it was renewed on 1st December.

It's amazing what information is out there if you know where to look

I done that with Ninja's help and e-mailed the address of the site owner - or at least I think I did! Told him to renew as the page wasn't working until he did and voila a few days later up and running again - coincidence?! I think not! lol ;)

oh well at least we are back up and running i was gettin so annoyed when i couldnt got on lol
SiJ2000 12-03-2009, 12:22 PM I see your point SilverShadow, but I reacted to you saying it was hacked, you the came back with an article which isn't really a hack. It is just someone putting ads with malicious code on genuine pages.
Sorry for any confusion :)
Anyway, as Tezmand says, we are back online, so who cares!! :)
V6 Bandit 12-03-2009, 05:26 PM If nothing else, from reading the article, it just proves how important it is to keep your virus and security software current!!
Lets keep safe people.

I would probably extend this to include:
Apply some common sense, and don't just rely on software!!
Amazing how far that can take you.
