It is a long-standing complaint in Australia that the residents of our national capital Canberra enjoy facilities and community infrastructure that the rest of us can only dream about thanks to their unlimited access to our tax dollars.
One such facility is the Sutton Road driver training complex; the complex includes a number of facilities such as:
Fully equipped air conditioned function centre for corporate events
Fully equipped air conditioned classrooms (capacity 20 students)
2.5km bitumen circuit with varying surfaces
Manoeuvring areas - bitumen and gravel
Self-watering skid pan
Purpose built Four Wheel Drive track
BBQ facilitiesClub VeeDub in Canberra recently held a Skid pan/drift day at the complex and made a movie of the event which may be viewed on the following Youtube link - watch the old VW Kombi utes for some fun, they are surprise performers despite being prone to terminal oversteer problems on a skid pan.

I will NEVER EVER be allowed to take the Eos to this facility    .

David, I saw the title of the thread and thought "Oh Good, we have a potential get together over the holidays"
I read through all of the goodies the complex has to offer and had to wonder why you didn't put this in the "Australia" bit of the forum, as our overseas cousins would only see this as a tease.
I then get to the last bit where you lament about not being able to take the Eos there and realise it was just a tease for all of us.
You clearly have three choices -
1/ buy the missus a new car and take over the Eos
2/ Buy yourself an Eos
3/ Drug the wife with something that lasts for at least 24 hours, go and do the the driving thing in the Eos, wind back the odo on your return, put yesterdays paper on the kitchen table every day for at least a week, change all signs of the date back for a day in the house etc etc and after a week or so, let the good lady wife think that she has lost a day, but it will happen a week after the fact and therefore you will not be sprung for nicking the Eos for the day.
The other option is to just take the Eos, come back home with lipstick stains all over the collar, stinking of perfume, ladies scanties on the back seat, and you won't be in trouble for entending the Eos.

Hi Geoff,
I just knew you wouldn't resist this post - I deliberately placed it in the Driver's Lounge as a possible catalyst for one one or more of our international members with access to a similar facility to organise a get-together. I suspect the Canberra facility is the only one in Australia which is available to the public on a regular basis; I am aware of some States having dedicated facilities for Police driver training however these are not available to the public. An event in Canberra http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/images/smilies2/headscratch.gif - will there be enough interest as the cost of hiring the venue would have to be paid up front? Just before or just after the Summer Nats in January might encourage interstate participation.
I really don't have any real problems with the Eos - it was a very "tongue-in-check" comment as I still like to throw my cars around when the conditions are appropriate - my partner is cautious and risk-averse by nature and does not like spirited drivinghttp://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/images/smilies2/wife_2.gif.
If I am ever reincarnated; I want to come back as her car as it receives unlimited pampering and the utmost consideration for its welfare which includes the way in which it is driven.

I understand the sentiment as far as spirited driving is concerned - my good lady wife does not like to be in the car when it occurs, which can be a real bummer on the Great Ocean Road.:(
Your reincarnation wish is interesting - while I can appreciate the desire for pampering - I would have thought you would like a bit of winding road action to go with it - either way, it is much better than what Prince Charles is reputed to have asked for.
