This is just a little warning for potential Eos customers out there

A few months ago, we enquired about a new Eos at an unnamed dealership. This Eos has been sitting in stock for a while as it is a manual with no options. A few weeks later, I noticed the car had new 18" Chicago wheels. It was then that we started looking for an Eos, I went in and negotiated, the salesman tried to tell me the car had sport suspension on it. It clearly didn't, as it sat high and I knew the car originally had the 17" wheels on. I told the salesman and he confirms that it in fact doesn't have it.

We ended up buying a used Eos privately, which was sold new by the same dealer. On every Eos taht I've seen with sport suspension and 18" from factory, there are little black plastic 'fender extenders' on the wheel arches. This one doesn't have them. I also noticed it was sitting high when parked next to my mother's White Night Eos, and the ride was noticably softer.
The seller optioned the car with 18" and sport suspension.

Not that it bothers us much as we would probably do a suspension upgrade later, but it angers me that the dealers are out there ripping people off like this. The sport suspension option has a code on the sticker found in the spare wheel well. It should also have those little black fender fins, and sit lower than a stock car. Hope this will help those purchasing a new car!

You do not advise if you are in the UK or not

I was advsied by a colleague who workis in the techncial department of another vehicle manufacturer, that the lillte black plastic extension where because of type approval.

In the UK if you look at a vehcile from above, you are not suppose to see any of the wheel/tyre protruding beyond the body.

Personally I have an Individual with 18 chicago and the extenders, I think they are a very bad after thought and really do look cheap.

I was going to remove them when my firend told me at the MOT stage my car could fail

I have USA VIN 2007 2.0T Sport with 18" Samarkinds and it does not have wheel extensions - the 18s were a factory installed option.

However, I have read elsewhere that USA Sport is just same as standard Europe suspension and not the softer ride default USA one.

He is in Australia. All Australian Eos vehciles with 18" wheels come with sport suspension as standard and the plastic extenders.

The US Sport Suspension is different to the ROW Sport Suspension in that is is not lowered to the same degree.

From what I understand those little plastic extenders were part of satisfying the Aussie Design Rules
but they're sneaky...

The UK cars have them as well ..... sorry to shoot down your ADR line :D

The extenders are UK only... It is due to the size of the wheels not leaving enough clearance to the outside edge of the wheelarch. These extenders make the wheel arch a little wider to compensate!

Except they are also fitted to the Australian cars :D

Anyway, back to my first post this suspension, which ever market has them fitted. I am in the Uk, I have them on mine and personally I think they let the side down, they really do look like they where an after thought and totally out of place on the vehicle.

One of mine came off last year but I never stuck it back on. It went through the MOT without it, so I'm sorely tempted to remove the other.

Sorry, what's their purpose again? What does type approval mean?

Cheers

I had one come off a while ago while washing my EOS using a pressure cleaner.
When the first service service was done VW glued it back on, no problems.
They may look a bit horrid!!! but they are quite discrete. Could you imagion how many would have been sold with Chicago wheels if they used a rubber strip to flare the wheel arch.
