: Replacement EOS arrived - leaks and rattles
joolzh13 05-11-2007, 01:42 PM Hi everyone,
Quick History synopsis: Bought 2.0 TDI Sport in July 06, three months in problems with roof noise, rattles, then I had leaks then other issues which aren't so relevant to this thread. VW Head office finally accepted the rejection after about 6 roof repair attempts but I'd done 12,000 miles - they wanted to charge 15p per mile (£1800 but I eventually negotiated a price to swap the vehicle. The replacement came 25th April having handed back the first EOS on 19th January)
I finally got my replacement 2.0 TDI SPORT EOS 2 weeks ago. It looked stunning Paprika Red, Cornsilk beige interior, lux pack, winter pack, 18" chicagos, bluetooth & I-Pod cradle.
All was okay until the first rain, I have two leaks on each back window area. Not too major I thought, lets see if it leaks on the next rain fall afterall that rain may have come in when the windows dropped.
Bank Holiday Monday - I thought I heard roof noise but as I had a lot of shopping in the boot I thought it might have been that.
More rain - more leaking - oh dear. Phoned the dealer they can't look until 29th May.
Wednesday I drove 1hr 20 mins to work and cried, the roof has three different noises, two are rattles and the other noise is difficult to describe but between a wind swirl or a tweeting noise.
I wrote to Head office and said that although the Dealer doesn't know about the noise problem as of yet I want to know the course of action they would like me to take because the miles I rack up each day, if these noises cannot be fixed I don't want to be penalised mileage charges. They called me today and said not to worry your dealer will sort it all out. (Not quite the response I expected).
A couple of hours later a Technician from VW called he is coming to collect my car on Monday and leaving me with a courtesy car so they can fix the problem.
I rang Trading Standards to see what rights I have given this is a replacement vehicle but its too complicated and they have got to look into it before giving me advice!
I love the EOS but I am not prepared to listen to rattles and squeaks when I've parted with £25,000. I wil keep you posted on what happens.
Sorry to hear of all you troubles with the Eos. It sounds you are still sold on the model, that's dedication for you. Thanks for the thread and keep the club posted on your progress in getting your new problem(s):( fixed
EOSmage 05-11-2007, 05:56 PM I know you have heard this before, and probably don't need to hear it again... but I'm going to do it anyway.
It is really important to lube the seals properly in order to stop the rattles. I know that many dealerships STILL don't know how to properly lube them all. Some places miss harder to reach seals, and some don't even bother doing them at all.
There are many threads out there talking about how to properly lube them all, and I think the best one is found HERE (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3087297)
I had lots of rattles in my roof, and they all went away with a lube job. I reapply once every 3 or 4 months, and that seems to work well to keep it leak-free and rattleless (granted, i've only done it twice, and only owned since december 2006)...

Keep giving that great advice .... think a lot of people don't realize the importance and aren't aware of the previous postings.
smoggypaul 05-11-2007, 06:52 PM EOSmage - excellent link, and that is a truly detailed and graphic explanation of how [and WHY!] to lubricate the roof seals!!!!!
Joolz, I hope your problems are resolved soon - as I look outside the window the rain is streaming down it - not Eos weather - but soon, soon you will want to be out there, topless - I hope it happens soon

EOSmage 05-11-2007, 09:29 PM Thanks for the kind words everyone. :) I'll keep on trying to help out.
As for rain not being the best Eos weather... I am not sure I agree. Any convertible will be great on a sunny day when the top is down and driving is happening (at the speed limits, of course).
Where the Eos REALLY shines (in my opinion) is in how it turns into a hard top "unconvertible" for the nasty weather days. With the top up (and the seals lubed properly) it is like our car isn't a convertible at all. Solid. Quiet. Less wind noise than my other cars.
The handling and responsiveness is just bonus.
I think the definition of Eos should be: "The car that is just as much NOT a convertible as any other non-convertible is with the side benefit that it really IS a convertible."
I totally agree with everyone on the importance of lubricating the roof seals correctly, but I wouldn't expect to have to do it after only two weeks, my eos is three months old now and I havn't lubed the seals yet, and there is no signs of any leaks or noises at the moment, although I do have a bottle ok krytox ready to do them, waiting for the weather to sort itself out now.

Bill T 05-12-2007, 10:44 AM Hi
If you think the Eos has some rattles and knocks, you should try the Saab 93 Convertible, then you will appreciate the Eos quality.
I tried to reject my last new Saab 93 Convertible 06, but the dealer wasn't interested and insisted they were all the same as I found out when they allowed me to have a run in an unregistered car.
The build quality of the Eos is far far better than the Saab, in fact several things came loose and fell off in the Saab, the steering wheel rattled so much when you turned left or right and hit a slightly uneven surface that the Air bag / Horn push unit came loose from the steering wheel.
The only thing the Saab had going for it was the seat, it's better than the Eos.
You must appreciate that all convertibles have some rattles and squeaks to put up with and as the Eos is so quiet you can hear a few, but with some other soft-top convertibles you cant hear the rattles for the wind and road noise.:(

It may have a lot to do with the initial roof fabrication. Some cars may be a "snugger" fit than others at assembly; and the intial krytox apploication softens the seals enough to improve the fit. As many have mentionned, it is seems to work and is definitely worth a try!

I 100% agree - I should have made my post clear in that I meant wasn't Eos 'top down' weather! My regular daily commute is a 130 mile round trip along mainly A and B [2-lane country roads that bend and twist!] roads - my last car was an Audi A4 Quattro, which stuck like glue. My Eos has handled the same roads with aplomb in its first week, in very wet and windy weather. I wholeheartedly agree that it really is a car for all seasons - I just want that top down!!!!
Best wishes

where are you in the west midlands im in west bromwich had our eos from vw wolverhampton they are very helpful with us , so far anyway !
joolzh13 05-14-2007, 02:53 PM Hi I'm from Redditch but I cant change dealers because the cost goes back to the dealer who supplied the vehicle.
geedee 05-14-2007, 04:11 PM I think you will find the cost is down to VW. The dealer charges everything regarding warranty work back to them.
I would certainly be rejecting the car..............The time awaiting inspection is appalling.............don't accept it go to another dealer or for some pretty quick advice, contact Honest John at the Telegraph readers letters desk.
I read him every Saturday and his advice on all points of motoring is excellent.
Graham
joolzh13 05-15-2007, 10:12 AM Thanks for the advice however, I have kept Honest John informed since the first EOS disaster, his advise when I initially was waiting for my replacement EOS and I had fears this might happen was to use the Audi Forum and the experts there. No-one replied.
UPDATE:
VW Tehincal Support Specialist came yesterday with a colleague from Head Office they came for a test drive, there was a leak present when they got in and they heard all the rattles but since my first post I've noticed that I feel like I drive a soft top as there is excessive wind noise (nothing to do with eating beans!). As the Technician couldn't hear I pulled over and he drove and he agreed that the drivers side did indeed have wind noise.
They've taken my car and promise to return it 150% better.
I wrote a letter to say that if the problems persist I would be rejecting the vehicle. The trouble for me is where does that leave me for refund, this is already a replacement vehicle for the first EOS supplied end of July 06. Oh well hopefully we wont have to cross that bridge.
FUNNY - I have a hire car - the Hire car company were under instruction to supply a VW - I got an Astra. Head office called out of courtesy to check the car arrived and are arranging a Jetta to come out this week in its place.
I'll keep you posted.
joolzh13 06-04-2007, 04:26 PM I'll begin with an update. Rejected my first July 06 EOS i January with 12K on the clock but the dealer took so long to agree the car was unfixable. My replacement EOS arrived 25th April, I was lucky and had a few days of sunshine however the first sign of rain I had two leaks, one each side of the car. I booked the car in but the earliest the car could be seen was after the Bank Holiday end of May - well doing over 100 miles a day I realised that Head Office should be aware because I would not be happy to be penalised mileage if they couldn't fix this car. Just before I wrote to Head office I heard a few rattles and creaks so I included these in my letter. Head Office rang to say not to worry the Dealer would sort the problems out. I re-iterated the history and questioned whether they really were going to leave it so long before looking, they agreed it was fine. One Hour or so later and I got a call from the VW HQ Technician arranging to collect my car very soon!
So I got my car back 2 weeks later 300 miles added and was told it was absolutely perfect.
The ECU Heat shield was loose and that was one of the rattles at the front of the car.
Something to do with the fuse box was wrong - that got fixed
felt added to roof parts to stop creaking, rattling.
Windows re-aligned to elliviate wind noise from outside
Plastic bits were removed that should have been removed on the PDI inspection!
Rear Bumper re-aligned as that stuck out one side more than the other.
Leaks fixed.
So I drove home so excited ...... only to hear Rattling all the way home (1 and half hours of rattling). I got in the house and my language was fowl. ......... My husband and I went out and he made me re-trace my steps, what had I touched since VW gave me back my car. The sliding roof bit - I had opened that up, so we drove and moved the roof slider and the rattle stopped. So now I know that if that isn't sat in the right place another rattle will occur.
I do have to say though the rest of the noises have been fixed (or at least I haven't heard them).
The car looks the part - drives the part and a few more days of sunshine we've had and I knew I love this car.
I am so worried though that I'll hear another noise its almost taking some of the pleasure away but I know having owned lots of cabriolets there isn't anything out there I will love just as much.
Why do people say that they've valetted the car when there is a layer of dust on the dash, the sills have muddy water run down them on the inside, the windscreen is thick with filth ....oh yes its because I can see the hoover marks on carpet thats classes as a VALET!
One last moan - my car should have been scothguarded however my seats are going blue!
archiea 06-04-2007, 08:20 PM Not to sound insensitive, but convertables will rattle. I mean you dealer messed up in many ways.. like the PDI delivery items, etc. But in you list of items that the fixed, I did not hear mentioned that the seals were lubricated with the Kytox compound. You should really check and see if that is the case. Also the felt that was added I think should only exist around the rear window where it contacts the deck....
Otherwise, get a good set of tunes to crank up while you drive.... :D

Pardon me for being 'sensitive' however for my car to have been collected by the Head Technician and kept for two weeks to be rectified I know it was more than just the Krytox application that was required. I was given a list of things that was rectified but I cannot be bothered to type any more detail because some people thing its acceptable to pay £25k for a car and to drown out the rattles by cranking up the stereo. Sorry but thats not acceptable in my books.

You certainly have a good point. You have paid good money for your new auto, and should expect VW to correct al the deficiencies. Keep harping!
I think we are all aware of the little niggles and rattles you get with the any convertible but I have to agree with you that your problems were excessive and deserve to be taken seriously. It can also point to future problems that we may all see with our own Eos, forewarned is forearmed.
cheers and thanks for the thread.
