: Boot alignment question
MYO09Eos 05-29-2010, 09:00 AM Just out of interest, has anyone taken any note of their boot alignment?
When some lady ran into the back of my bumper last year (its been repaired 3 times due to bad repairs) that aside. I've had to check the rear of the car each time it has come back from the repairer, even tho the repairs were only to the bumper, Ive noticed the following.
Left hand side of the boot, where it runs along the side of the tail light, I can stick 1/4 of my little finger between the boot and the light. However I can't do this on the right side of the boot. Has anyone else checked / noticed this on their Eos? My insurance company tells me it isnt because of the smash, it is from when the car was manufactured.... I'm puzzled by this comment and why there would be a difference of each side.:confused:
king_sid 05-29-2010, 02:32 PM Hi,
I have just checked my boot and it's the same both sides. I am unable to poke my finger in any of the gaps.
My car is only 8 days old!

Back to the repairer for adjustment unless the impact was hard enough to distort the bodywork.
If this is the case, go straight to your consumer claims tribunal and apply for on order for rectification of faulty work by the repairer and insurance company if one is involved.

Thanks for the reply everyone :o) Insurance company reckons that there was just a dint in the beaver pannel (the metal bar underneath the bumper). They said they have photo's of the damage and confirmed there was no chassis damage etc. Im just worried that Im going to be going back and forth between Insurance and VW to try and get an answer why Ive got an alignment issue. Have come across a company in Melb - IVIC (www.ivic.com.au) who carries out lazer measuring on cars to ensure that all the pannels are repaired to the manufactures specs / measurements, but it is around $600. Does anyone know if I could claim this expense back on my Insurance or VW?

You will not get anything from VW as it is accident damage not faulty materials/workmanship during manufacture of the vehicle.
The laser check would be a last resort in my opinion, first thing to do is to write [not phone or talk] to both the insurer and the repairer informing them that you have this problem and request a suitable time for them to inspect your car in your presence. However, before you do this, ask around your family and friends if they know a smash repairer who can have a look at the car for you and advise what they think the problem is - if you are a RACV member, they should be able to help you as well. Forewarned is forearmed as they say :D.
The outcome should be an offer to fix the problem for you. If not, get the car assessed by a professional motor vehicle loss assessor [don't know current costs but should be in the $200/$300 range for a writen report, verbal would be less but carry less weight than a written report] and head for the Consumer Tribunal. The claim should be for the assessors estimate of the repair cost plus the cost of the report plus some compensation for the inconvenience you have suffered trying to get your problem fixed [if you don't ask, you will not get compensation for the last item;)]

On the bottom rear of your boot (trunk, here in the States) there are two Torx bolts that adjust the trunk lock side to side and up and down.
By removing the plastic covering, these torx bolts can be accessed and a slight adjustment to the left can be made.
Most people with little mechanical skills could perform this but I suggest you ask the body shop that fixed your vehicle, to do this for you. It will only take 10 minutes or so.
This adjustment will not harm the operation of the convertible top.

Thanks for the info guys... I'm mechanically challenged, so I'll have to get someone to check it out. David, you mention the trunk lock, is it the lock that moves the actual trunk / boot? Just went and had a look at how it looks again, the alignment of the bumper is out - by running my finger on the side of the light (when the trunk/boot) is open. the left it out by about 7mm. Was too dark outside to find the torx bolts, might check it out tomorrow during the day so I know what your referring too. (and when I speak to someone, they think I know what Im talking about.. lol)
Silver - had the insurance company come to my work the other day to re assess my car and the dodgy repairs, his excuse for non aligning bumper was 'there are two slots that the bumper slides into, they cant do anything about it. When I questioned the aligning of the bumper, refused to accept that it had anything to do with the crash. Hopefully it will only be a case of aligning the bolts as David mentioned. Still, it leaves the question of the alignment of the bumper and how they are going to resolve it. 3rd time lucky I hope or Im gonna go stir crazy !

We may be talking about two different things.
I was thinking that your trunk lid is out of alignment. In other words, when it is closed, it sits a bit farther to the left or off center a bit.
If that is the case, where the latch catch is, at the bottom rear of the trunk, there are two torx bolts that can be loostened and moved to one side or the other.
This will cause the trunk lid to close a bit to the left or right, depending on which way it was adjusted.
Again, I don't know if we are on the save wave length or not.

On the same wave length :o) yeah the boot / trunk lid is more aligned to the right when its closed. Do you happen to know if the bolts only adjust the lid left to right in the aspect of when your looking at the boot / trunk from the very back, that you notice it? Ive checked the sides of the lid and they look aligned on the back quarter pannel.

When the bolts are loosened, the latch will move to the left or right, depending on what you need. It will also move up and down for vertical adjustment.
Your vertical adjustment is probably ok, however.
Not sure if this is what your question was. It is difficult without pictures.
MYO09Eos 06-20-2010, 12:33 AM Picked up my car after a week at the VW service centre, alas, the boot is in the same way when I dropped it off as they were unable to get the alignment the way it should be. I've now been advised that I will have to take it to a vw specialist smash repair place to see if they can align it. Should I be worried that a VW service centre can't align the boot? haha
Eos_Up 06-20-2010, 06:00 AM From your description, it sounds like something I had also. I was backing up SLOWLY in a parking lot in the dark and the lower rear bumper went slightly over a log that was a boundary marker as the edge of the parking lot.
I heard a scraping noise very similar to putting the front bumper over a non standard curb (higher). Anyway, I slowly pulled forward and off I went to home.
The next morning I was getting in my car and noticed a gap between the lower bumper and the metal rear panel that the bumper sits against. The gap was only on the left side. Apparently, when I pulled forward across the log, I "pulled" the bumper back.
I took the car to my favorite low cost repair shop (where they don't try to screw with with expensive BS). The repair man said I pulled a couple of fasteners off between the bumper and the body. It was necessary to remove the entire lower plastic bumper, put a couple of new fasteners and then reattach the bumper.
Total cost for the job (about $70 US). That's why I always go to this shop for ANY body work.
