Castrol is recommended, but Mobil 1 0W-40 meets VW 502 specs and has higher test results. One concern is that the Mobil will be too heavy for the oil pump resulting in slight mph reduction... any experience with comparing oils? Any thoughts or opinions?

Sincerely,
Michael

Are you comparing the Mobil 1 0W-40 to Castrol Syntec 5W-40, both commonly available in the U.S.? I'm not sure where you're located. If you're comparing those two, I would think the Mobil 1 would be better from an efficiency standpoint during cranking and cold weather, being that its low temp viscosity (the first number, 0) is less. However, since you do most of your driving with the engine warmed up and hot, the second number is probably more meaningful. In this case, both oils are the same. Obviously, if you're talking about one of the Castrol 5W-30 or 0W-30 VW 502 approved oils, then the Mobil 1 would have more high-temp viscosity and presumably give you slightly less mpg. I'm certainly not an oil expert, but I can't imagine it would be a big difference.

If you're in the U.S., you know it's slim pickings at the local Advance/Pep Boys/etc. for VW 502 approved oils. Instead of monkeying around with individual $6-7 quarts of oil, I've been buying 5-liter jugs of Pentosin High Performance II 5W-40 online. Costs a couple bucks more, but I like the convenience of one big ol' jug. There are plenty of online vendors; I happen to buy it through ECSTuning (along with filters and other stuff I may need to combine shipping). Germanfilters is another well-known vendor of European oils; I believe they have an ELF oil in 5-liter jugs that's VW-502 approved.

There are a LOT of opinions out there on oil. Mine is that is as long as it's a VW 502 approved oil and it's changed at a 5K mile interval instead of the 10K mile interval, your engine will be happy, and your VW warranty will be satisfied.

For some reason i thought the correct oil for the 147TSI Eos was 0W-40 but my dealer here in Brisbane informed me it was 5W-30 & if i used 0W-40 it would void my warrenty.

Coments?

Regards Barry

At least in the U.S. for the 2009 2.0TSI, the owner's manual specifies 5W-40, and you can use 5W-30 if 5W-40 isn't available. Both have to be VW 502 spec oil, of course. Not sure about other motors & other countries...

I am now using in my 2007 Volkswagen Eos 2.0T Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy Fully Synthetic Motor Oil for past 2 oil & filter changes at 15K and 20K miles after having VW dealer oil and filter change at 5K and using standard Mobil 1 5W-30 for the 10K miles oil/filter change.

I still marvel at how my 2.0T uses no oil, even after driving 5K miles it still is above the 1 quart add mark on the dip stick when starting at the full mark right after the oil change.

Mobil claims the 0W-30 advanced fuel economy formulation improves fuel economy 2% over their 5W-30 formulation.
