: EOS Diesel or Petrol?

We are really thinking about buying the EOS in Auto, we only do about 7,500 kms a year, mostly regional city driving, so no gain from a diesel model, speed of little interest (but resale down the track is). We see dealers mostly have the diesel model for sale, is the reason the petrol models are more popular?.

Note, new updated model may be here in OZ August not much changed on it.

Local dealer offered this, is it a good deal?

A Silver Leaf metallic paint, TDI DSG (Auto) with factory Bluetooth, MDI (Media Device Interface) and two individual VW EOS roller suitcases, Price $53,990 drive away. Or should we be looking for a petrol model?.

Hello/ Gidday Keith,
My wife and I are looking at the possible purchase a EOS in auotomatic as well. Same level of Bluetooth, and Nav /Media Device Interface. We are looking at the 103 TDI that is of course I believe the same car you are looking at. If so we are currently quoted at $58,500 for the same vehicle ,so obviously your doing well. Particularly with those additional VW EOS roller suitcases.
I must admit, that it is quite dissapointing that at first the differential between vw recommended retail of $46,990.00 had blown out to $60,500.00 for dealer delivery, stamp duty drive away. Some $13,510.00 more than the recommended and $6,510.00 more than you are being quoted.
The only problem I have is that such figures put the vehicle above what is being suggested for the BMW Series 1 Convertable with the same inclusions. Good luck to us both. In choosing both the vehicle and obtaining a reasonable drive away price.

It all depends on your mileage high mileage users will be better of with a diesel powered car but on low mileage (because of the extra cost, involved Ie. higher initial vehicle price, higher maintenance cost and higher price of diesel(in UK)) it takes longer to recoup your money so a petrol engine would be cheaper to run. I have had both engine configurations Golf 20 TDI DSG and now an Eos 20 TSI DSG and only do about 8.000 miles a year and find the Eos works out kinder to my pocket.

I don't know what the suitcases are worth, but here is a link to the Discount New Cars page for the Eos.

Unless there is a lot of extras you haven't mentioned, $60500 drive away is crazy.

Enquire through this website and they will get the closest participating dealer to contact you with the price shown on the website.

Even if you don't do it through the website, if tells you what price you can get the dealer down to.

As far as the petrol vs diesel discussion goes, I test drove both, and although the petrol one went a bit harder overall, the in gear grunt of the turbodiesel, the great fuel economy (averaging about 6.4L/100km since new), and the lower price of the diesel won me over.

I have no doubts about the motor, my only thought is whether I should have gone for a manual. The DSG is great, and it does have a manual mode, but its not quite the same thing. Round town, the DSG is really good, but on the Great Ocean Road ...................

You don't have to drive the car on offer, or even one from the same dealership. I test drove at 4 or 5 different dealerships, while I was sussing my car out.

If there are no Eos' at all to try, you could try a Golf GTi and A Golf 103kw diesel back to back. Obviously the Gti will handle a lot better, but just do it to compare mid range pulling power and take off.

Sorry, but I think those body kits look awful. Why rubbish a really nice looking car?

Or buy last month's Wheels magazine, [Jan], where the Golf GTI is compared to the GTD. Knock off even more of a performance difference with the lower powered engine in the diesel EOS [103kw/320nm vs 125kw/350nm as tested] and you will see why petrol is usually the choice of the enthusiast, despite the greater fuel consumption. Horses for courses, as they say.

As the diesel model is available, is it Ok that we do low kms (7K per year max), thought diesels had to be run a lot.

Diesels don't have to be run a lot, it's just that high mileages reap cost benefits in fuel usage etc, which is why most taxis are diesel, except here in OZ of course where we have large LPG powered sedans with no luggage space.

An EOS is an expensive indulgence anyway, so why not get what you actually want, not just something that's cheaper or more available, because that way you can avoid always thinking "I should have bought the other one" throughout the tenure of your ownership.

It would be interesting to know the breakdown of EOS sales, i.e. manual vs DSG vs petrol vs diesel in all combinations, then we would have a better idea of the secondhand desirability when resale comes around. The cost differences are minimal, under 10% of the purchase price at most, especially when compared to other accessories, but I would venture to suggest that a manual is less likely to find favour with most of the EOS's demographic, as is a diesel, whatever their respective merits for some knowledgeable purchasers.

How many lady owners out there specify manual/diesel by choice, not just those keenies posting on specialist websites like this?

Good luck with your purchase.

As much as I like the diesel Eos, I agree 100% with kipperjet. Please make sure you try driving both petrol and diesel versions despite the obvious travel inconvenience involved in getting to a dealer with a suitable vehicle. You might have to test drive a second-hand vehicle if a suitable demonstrator cannot be found.

Driving is believing.

I drove both and found the diesel just as fun to drive.
As I do about 15000kms/ year the diesel saves me about half my old fuel bill.

Fact is, with the top down you tend to drive slowly in the countryside and around your local neighbourhood. Unless you need to feel the car lurch at every start, then get the diesel. If you really want to feel the power, get a petrol manual .

BTW- I strongly recommend beige seats as the darker colors do heat up in the sun...

The good woman and I had a drive of the current EOS 155KW model at Gold Coast on weekend, plenty of power and smooth as silk, really liked the seats and position of wheel, thought the fit and finish was excellent

Think we'll go for new updated version with all its new features (http://www.autospectator.com/cars/models/2012-volkswagen-eos-official-photos-features-specs-pricing) like cool leather seats, expected mid year at same price some say.

I reckon petrol is the way to go - as quiet as new diesel engines are now versus the tractor noise of the past, they still sound like diesels. Not a good look for a convertible in my view.
Although, if they had a 4 door EOS only in diesel, I'd take that as opposed to having to sell mine now with a baby on on the way...here's the plug & $500 off for EOS clubbers:
