: A battery "GOTCHA" tale...

A couple of days ago we went to a restaurant for dinner that only had valet parking. When we came out it was dark and raining. The valet pulled the car up to the door and we got in and drove home. When we arrived, I exited the car quicker than normal as a bathroom stop was "calling".

The next day I went out to go somewhere in my Eos and discovered the battery to be completely dead. I looked around and saw the headlights were in the "on" position. I ALWAYS drive with the headlights in the "auto" position. I'm guess the valet jumped in the car, switched the headlights to on (all the way to the right) and then brought the car up to the door.

Normally when I come home or go anywhere at night I pause to see the headlights turn off automatically after a few moments. Because of the bathroom "looming", I didn't do that and paid for the result.

I used my home charger and the battery is back to normal, but I'm not as I hit my head on a door getting the battery charger, results in a bit of a gash. On top of everything I gave the valet a nice $5 tip!

I thought even in the "on" position the headlights would have turned off after a period of time with the engine not running and the key not in the ignition.

I've noticed that they don't turn off if the switch is in the fog light position either (same as ON, only pulled out). I've never had a dead battery b/c of it but have fortunately been reminded by the "chime" upon exiting. I'm sure in your case your bladder urges overcame the auditory reminder. Still, I think the lights should ALL turn off.

Dealer has replaced a door module on my 08 because it was not telling my car windows or radio when the door was opened/closed. No chime on mine when this happened and the dealer took 3 visits and free replacement battery to resolve it.

Interesting.... I had the exact same experience as Eos Up, back in March 2008. Same cause, same morning surprise. I called VW help number, they sent out Pop-A-Lock for jump start. Drove around for an hour or so and thought my batteries would be sufficiently recharged from normal driving so did not get a "real" recharge.

That worked until November 2009, when I asked my dealer to check on slow am cranking. I told them the history, they tested my batteries and said they should be replaced under warranty. My driving is mostly short trips, so that may well have played a part in the battery problem, but I was very satisfied with the resolution by VW and my dealer.
