Hi
Thanks for the info on this forum, it has really helped my research on buying my new car!

I am looking to buy a used MY09 TDI DSG, (pearlescent black with corn-silk beige leather). I have organised an NRMA pre-purchase inspection.

There's a lot of info on the roof (leaks etc) and I'm not sure that the roof seals on this car have been attended to (I'm going to ask the NRMA Inspector to check carefully any leak signs). I'm just wondering if the seals should be lubricated every six months and they haven't been for two years, if I get them done when I buy the car will they then be ok or is the 'damage already done'?

The car is in very good condition but I get the feeling the maintenance has been done on an 'absolutely necessary' basis - anything else in particular I should ask the inspection guy to look for?

The car has just had the 60K service (yes high kms but its a deisel and good price) - nothing on the service invoice to indicate anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks for your help

(hopefully soon to be proud EOS owner)

Hi Donna, congratulations on your good taste in cars.

If its an MY09, it should still be covered by the new car warranty. If there is anything untoward, you would want to get it checked out before it expires.

It may be worth talking to the service people at the dealership where it was serviced. They should also have records of anything that needs looking at, and should be able tp make comment on the condition of the car if it has just been in.

Good luck

All the best with it....I found the information so good when inspecting the car from the forum. Especially the one where to check out the seals and any leaks was to partly open or close the roof and get out of the car and check things. Enjoy your sweet ride..

You can check whether the seals have been treated recently or not by their colour. An untreated seal will be a whitish-grey on the exposed surfaces and feel hard when touched whereas a treated seal will be black and feel soft when you touch it.

All is not lost if the seals have not been treated - pick a sunny winter's day, park the car in the sun so it gets nice and warm, open the roof as detailed in the instructions posted elsewhere on this forum and apply the Krytox or VW lubricant depending on which one you have. Apply sparingly as you do not have to swamp the seal and allow the sun to keep the seal warm while the lubricant penetrates it.

I have found the best time to do the seals is in early October as the weather warms up and then in early April to prepare the seals for winter. Applying the lubricant when the seals are hot allows it to be spread easily over the seal and accelerates the rate of penetration.

So the car passed with flying colours except for one minor (in the inspector's words) thing.

He found a 'tiny' leak of 'very clean' transmission fluid. The car had its 60K service less than a week ago which includes checking the DSG for leaks, adding fluid and so the inspector says (assumes?) that when they put the seal back there is some grit or something stopping it fully sealing properly.

I'm figuring that (a) its just been serviced so if something was wrong it would have been picked up then and if they didn't do it right they will have to do whatever is needed to put it right and (b) the car is still under factory warranty.

Otherwise the report was excellent (actually better than I expected given my experience with building inspections).

Any views?

Photos will follow when deluge of paperwork with leasing company is finalised and car has been detailed.
