anyone has any experience of this? I've been away for 2 weeks and the Eos has been loving looked after by my nephew who has driven it on and off. He parked in the garage on Sunday and came to wash it on Thursday ready for my return and it woudn't start!!! VW assistance came and the man declared that it was a flat battery and that it was a common problem with the Eos! My nephew had not put the roof up or down with the engine off or left lights on etc. The man said that the alarm can drain the battery if the car is not moved for a while! This can't be right can it? He suggested it get checked anyway so I'm booking it in next week... how unlucky am I??? Just when the weather seems to be improving too!

Thanks for any help!

Hi Karen,

Sorry to hear of the problem and if it is a common problem then hopefully VW are working on it. Although that said I would say that a lot could be down to owners raising and lowering the roof with the power off and then leaving the car before starting it.

4 days is certainly not a long time for a moden car to be parked with the alarm active and should not drain the battery.

What ever the problem, as long as the engine is running you should have no reason not to use the roof during this fine weather.

Sounds like a faulty battery or charging system. Or the dealer was playing in the showroom with the roof before you collected your EOS.
A brand new car whether an EOS or not should not discharge its battery with only the alarm on.
If you had left it for 6 months then perhaps the alarm could do that, but not after just 2 weeks.
Something is wrong.
As yours is the 3.2 with twin batteries perhaps one is faulty.

Hope they fix it for you

Thanks Jim and Don

As Jim said, 4 days is ridiculous and I now suspect that the showroom/garage people may have been playing with the roof before I collected it!!

I am booking it in to be checked over asap!

Thanks again

I have had a similar problem with a Passat before. Ask the dealer what the "everything off" battery current can be!

Parked 2 days and would not start - AA man came out and said battery was OK but flat. He got it started and we then spent the next 15 minutes looking for the cause of the drain (interior light off, boot light off, glove box light off etc, etc.) as his "no-load" (i.e. everything off parked and locked) battery current was 1.6 Amps. This will discharge an 80 Ah battery in a couple of days.

He rang his support center for advice and they confirmed that the "everything off" current was specified as up to 1.8Amps ! ! ! He did not believe it and no-one I tell believes me.

It only did it once in four years and one occasions stood for 14 days as I was unable to drive following surgery and it started first time! It may never happen again!

I have had this problem twice with my EOS, after 8 days being the shortest time.

The delaer reckoned it was current being drained by the SAT NAV unit and they have fitted a new one.

My EOS is currently standing for 14 days, so I'll let you know when I try and start it if the change of SAT NAV unit has fixed the problem.

I had the car booked in today to be checked and came to start it (after 4 days of non movement) and it was flat as a pancake. VW assistance were here in 30mins :) and the car is now in the dealers!

Hopefully it will continue to rain while the car is being sorted. I will be so mad  if the sun shines and i have to drive the Treg! Although that is an AMAZING ride. If you ever get the chance to test drive a V10 Treg, go for it and be absolutely blown away!

Hmmmm, this will be interesting.. When I get mine, I will mainly only use it at weekends.... Does this mean I have to get my battery booster thing out every weekend??

I will report back!

I don't think you need to worry Simon as most people on here haven't had this problem... although I think they may never leave it a few days between drives  I will be watching your space!

And guess what.... the sun is out  Bloomin' typical!!!!!!

Seems to be more of a problem with the V-6's.

The car is STILL in the garage :( They can't find a problem. There is no drain on the battery. They have tried all combinations. Last night they were leavig it overnight with the top down to see if that causes a drain. I have parked with top down twice in total.. once when I was picking a parcel up from my sister's and second when I realised I'd left something in the house and had to run back in to get it.. so I can't see it being that!!!

Is it possible that the car was delivered to me with a poorly charged battery and that fact I've never really gievn it a 'good run' means it has never got full.?When the garage got the car, they immediatlly fully charged the batterys on a machine so they will never have noticed that lack of charge. Grasping at straws here, but need to get this car back....... absence is NOT making the heart grow fonder. This is the first car I've ever had that has caused me problems!! I told my friend the VW car dealer to put on order in for a GTi for me.... I am currently joking.. but for how long

Hopefully they will have some better news today

With all the time they are wasting, I would suggest to them to give you a new battery, you can then give it a good run and then see how it goes.... If it's not draining, then it's probably a battery problem....

Good luck

Well, got back off holiday and the car started 1st time. So, my new SAT NAV unit has fixed the problem.

Hang in there, Karen.
It is possible that before you received your car, the dealer showed the roof
system to other potential buyers, thus running down the batttery. Perhaps
the car wasn't run enough to recharge the battery.
Just speculating.
Keep us posted.

Thank you. Haven't heard from the garage today so my pal must be off. The roof up/down scenario is my best hope but they aren't admitting that  Hopefully they will have some answers for me tomorrow. At least it will have been fully valetted. It was a bit grubby going in

Good luck.... I just got delivery of mine and IT'S AMAZING!!!

I don't think any issue would be enough to convince anyone that this is anything other than a very cool, well built car when all is considered!!!

Garage have rung to say there is no fault. They have tried everything to get the battery to drain and it won't  They just think that the battery was low when I got it and the fact I don't do large amounts of miles in it (my motorway driving is stop start -M6 South junctions 23- 20) means that it has never fully charged.

Sigh. My pal is delivering it back to me this morning. and it is a sunny day :)

I will GO BALLISTIC with them if it happens again!!

Take it for a good long run... If it happens again, I really do suggest a new battery from them under warranty... Lead Acid batteries do not like being discharged. If it goes flat and is not charged right away, it may never be the same again!

Good luck!!!

She's gleaming and it has been gloriously sunny all day :D Drove into school this a.m at 8:30 on the M6, roof down. Left it parked outside my office all day, roof down (i was next to her all the time) and drove her home roof down! Fantastic :)

School also got 84% A*-C GCSEs so pretty chuffed about that too!

Glad to hear things are picking up for you Karen .... after 60 days with virtually NO RAIN, we finally got some last night with promise of more tonight. Don't think I have had the top up 10% of the time this summer!

I was unable to use my car between mid december and mid april, give or take a week, killed me looking at it on the drive (unable to drive due to nicely busted ankle). Anyway, car started first time when I tried! Was amazed, as were my parents

Not driven since Sunday p.m.On weds lunchtime I got kids strapped in looking forward to a lovely drive as it was a sunny day!

Not a thing happened when I turned my key  Completely flat

I am absolutely fuming. VW assistance man was great (out within an hour) and was confused when the radio come on when he 'jump started' it. The key wasn't in the ignition. So as someome suggested, it may be Sat Nav unit but why didn't the garage check this when they had it for a week.

I sooo want to swear lots.

As it is Sept 1st tomorrow, garage are busy so I'm not expecting to hear anything until next week

Seriously considering swapping now. In fact pricing up a fully specced golf R32 next week. I will expect the garage to give me and EXCELLENT price for my EOS

Karen

PS even madder that I wasn't allowed to use the 15 mad smilies I put in my message at several points LOL!

I think you should insist on a new battery right away... If it happens to that, then you can take it further...

Really sorry to hear about the reoccurance of the issue though :(

Hi Karen,

Stick with it. My dealer identified the problem to be the SAT NAV unit in under a day. So I suggest you give the dealer some stick. My dealer is Spirit Volkswagen in Leamington Spa. The Service Manager is a good guy. You can always get your dealer to give him a call.

Even if you switch to a Golf R32, you can still have the same problem. After all, it's not VW that make the SAT NAV unit.

Thanks guys.... I am drawing up a wish list as we speak! I am planning on asking for a free service, valets for both cars and maybe even some cash to pay for the HUGE amounts of fuel I'm having to use driving the Touareg!

I have already insisted they fit new batteries and I really hope is is the Sat Nav unit... a quick fix!

The fact we've bought 3 cars from them in 1 month (Eos, Treg and a 1.0l 02 Lupo hubby uses for work :p ) means that we should be getting damn good service from them. I reminded then of this when I dropped the car off!

Karen,

You sure love your VW's! This is my first one and I do have to say I am very impressed so far.... Just to make you all jealous, we have the largest service centre round the corner! Open 6am to 10pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm Sat AND Sunday!! They do all servicing et al during these times.... How about that, if I am bored one night, I can get my car serviced! They are reall friendly too... For anyone in NW London, it is Citygate VW in Capitol Way, NW9!

If there really is no current draw when everything is switched off, then a serviceable battery will not discharge for VERY long time; we are talking many, many months.

You have a faulty battery; insist that they change it.

Cheers,
Pete.

See my post above - it is a problem that sometimes occurs with VWs. Get them to measure the "everything off" battery current. Bet you £10 it is more that he expects it to be!

Afert 3 emergency assistance call outs and 2 weeks in the garage, I finally finally have her back for good.

It WAS the sat nav unit and I now have a shiny new one. The thing had to fault while the garage had the car hence the long wait! But it faulted yesterday morning, they ordered a new one which arrived this a.m and the car was delivered back to me this afternoon. It was waiting on my drive all beautifully valeted when I got home from work :)

Glad to have her home but typically, the sky has clouded over... it has been really sunny and hot here ALL week

Glad to here she's fixed, Karen. I hope it means you'll keep her now.
Sounds like it was the same problem as Hornet then. Perhaps there's a few other faulty nav units out there. Mine has been fine so far.
Perhaps the drain has more of an effect on the smaller batteries fitted to the 3.2. My TDI battery is huge.

I have a similar problem. My EOS is only a couple of months old and has only covered 500kms. In that time I have had to call Volkswagen assist twice for flat battery no starts. The scond time the car was delivered back to the dealership. It is being delivered back tomorrow with two new batteries but with the advice that nothing was uncovered after extensive testing. The car is left locked for up to 10 days at a time. If the problem repeats I am resigning myself to buying a starter pack.

Sounds to me like a case of the cheap battery. mine died just now after 15 mths of use. lots of short distance miles, plus leaving on vacation for 7 days.Send the battery to Oreily (parts shop here in Houston, TX) for a battery test, doesn't want to take a charge at all. Bought a brand new battery all working fine now...by the way no sat nav units to begin with.

I used to own nothing but toyotas. and they all seemed to have a case of the cheap batteries. it work fine for under 18 mths and they all need replacing. So I believe is a cutting corner thing from the auto manufacturers. just like buying new homws, the builder gives you the cheapest appliance known to man.

I have had my EOS coming up to a year now and she is laid up for two weeks in every five (gargaged) while I reluctantly go to work away. Every ,time I come home she starts first time everytime no problem. Tip always have engine on when lowering or raising the roof.
PS Still the best car I,ve ever driven or owned and shes gorrrrrrgeous :)
