My EOS is 2007 TDI model, currently in garage for knocking noise at low speeds from front wheels. Been told that the steering rack is worn and has to be replaced at a cost of about £1,100!
The car is only 4 yrs old with 43,000 miles on the clock. Can't believe this is normal for a car of this age/mileage. Of course VW customer care say this would only be covered with their 3 year warranty.
Anyone else have similar problems?

As your car is now out of warranty and the problem is associated with generic components shared with other VW models, I suggest you take your car to an independent VW specialist and let them have a look at the problem before proceeding further. The only time I would return to the dealer would be for roof problems and an occasional check for updates to the vehicle computer system if your specialist does not have access to the updates.

This kind of noise can also be due to faulty/worn constant velocity joints on the drive shafts and this is an easy fix. If the steering rack is at fault, it may be repairable or can be replaced with a reconditioned unit at a much lower cost than a new rack.
