Default engine computer chip upgrade

Hi,
I've seen advertisements that, for a not unreasonable sum, offer to by means of computer programming upgrade, boost engine performance by 50 or more horsepower.
Has anyone here had experience with swapping chips?
Can any automotive shop do the swap?
Is there a downside?

That's not how it's done! Your car/ECU goes to somebody with specialist kit, knowledge and programming files to replace the OE. You need to talk to one of the many specialists that advertise their services. Be aware that having paid money, if your car ever goes to a dealer for work, it is likely to come back with its aftermarket tuning removed.

Chip tuning can be done at various levels. At its simplest and cheapest only re-programming may be done and higher levels of tuning will probably need parts replaced or removed. Removing certain parts may invalidate local emissions regulations or be regarded as modifications for insurance purposes.

IMHO I wouldn't consider more than a Stage1 'economy remap' for a street car keeping original mechanical parts, unless you want to risk expensive engine failure. But if the sky's your limit with deep pockets to replace a blown engine, go for bigger thrills.

I had an APR upgrade (Stage I) and it works great! It was professionally installed by an authorized dealer, and was if I remember, about $800 (US). I live in California and it still passes smog. It also passes a lot of cars, much better now. Stage II required a different down-pipe and besides the smog issue, I really don't want to push a two litre motor to it's limits. I haven't had it in to the dealer. If I have an issue, I take to the guys that did the upgrade. They are great! Yes, I notice a definite difference in performance without sacrificing driving stance. It runs like 'normal' until you stand on it, then it takes right off!
There are folks that have gone stage III, but it's like building an OLD VW aircooled 1600 to a 2180 or 2275 cc "bomb motor".. Half the time you get to go really fast, the other half is pulling the engine and rebuilding. Okay on an engine with only four bolts holding it in... Not-so-much an Eos! My two cents.

PS: It will still pass smog but the dpf load will be higher. He doesn't say if his engine is gasolene or diesel.
