My 2007 EOS displays that it needs a 15,000 mile service. The owners manual does'nt mention it and neither does the VW website for a 2007 EOS with 15,000 miles. The dealer says they want to change the oil. Has anyone else had or resolved this situation?

it is my understanding the 15,000 mile oil change applies to vehicles using long-life synthetic oil which has not been changed at an earlier service. I assume the reason for this display is that your oil has not been changed previously or the indicator has not been reset if the oil was changed.

There is no VW 15,000 mile service for US models. If you look in your owners booklets, there is one for scheduled maintenance and there is nothing for 15K. The dealer at the 10K is supposed to reset the reminder to go off evry 10K. If your dealer is doing what mine is, they are trying to drum up extra business. My dealer told me this is a way to monitor oil useage as VWs have been known for oil consumption figures. They consider 1 quart per 1k miles normal. But think about it. If the car uses a quart every thousand miles, by the time you take the car in there would be none left in the engine. My suggestion is to reset the reminder (info is in the O/M) and check your oil level regularly. Pick up a quart of oil and keep it in the trunk. In the US the two main oils used are Castrol Syntec 5W-40 and Mobil1 0W-40. Both are VW 502.00 approved and used by the dealers.

A thought just occurred to me - 10,000 miles = 15,000Km near enough. I wonder if there has been a glitch in the software and the reminders have not been reset to the imperial equivalent for the US spec vehicles.

I have been told normal VW practice is for the oil level warning light to be set to come on after 1 quart/1 litre has been used and the general engine warning light set for when there is about 1 quart/1 litre of oil left in the sump causing the oil pressure to drop.

I would appreciate confirmation from others more experienced with current VW practice than I that this is indeed the case. I rely on checking all fluid levels manually when filling the tank or before a long trip however this is not absolute protection if a problem arises during the trip and the warning lights have to be relied on in this situation.

Thanks for the inputs. I have been typically using about 1 quart of Mobil 1 oil for every 5000 miles. I have reset the service interval per the O/M and everything is fine.

Thanks again for confirming my suspicions.

I have to put oil in my car????? whoops....let's hope for a dry weekend, I wanted to wash the car, hoover the inside, polish the leather, lube the seals and now put oil in it (nearly 10,000 miles and I have only just worked out how to pop the bonnet!) :p

I've never needed to replace any oil in mine - don't know what all the fuss is about. :p

Strange how the oil consumption can vary so much between cars? It can't surely all be down to driving style?!

My experience suggests oil consumption is largely determined by how the car was run-in - if the car was driven with kid gloves at mostly constant speeds; these seem to be more prone to using oil as they settle down. Cars which are driven at constantly varying speeds with regular bursts of acceleration and deceleration seem to be those that have minimal/no oil consumption later on.

It is my opinion, the cars that use oil have either glazed cylinder bores by not being driven hard enough to bed the piston rings properly or worn turbocharger seals from not been loaded sufficiently to bed them in - this means making sure the engine revs to at least 3000rpm on a regular basis during running-in and avoiding wide-open throttle until the car has done at least 5 to 10 thousand kilometres/miles. The engine components need periods of stress followed by recovery periods when they are lightly loaded to establish the right running clearances - these clearances are critical in determining later oil consumption.
