Good day all.

I'm having a few problems with a gear crunch into 2nd????????????

Doesn't matter wether it's going up from 1st or down from 3rd, still the same.

Any ideas out there????????????????????

Regards

Doesn't sound good, if it were me I would be straight down to the dealer to get it checked out. You didn't say how old the car was but I'm presuming still under warranty so shouldn't cost.

Sounds a bit familiar to me - I had the same problem with 5th gear last year with only 270 miles on the clock . I had an immediate replacement gearbox ( under warranty of course ) and I suspect you might need the same. I hope yours is still under warranty............

Have to say I embarrass myself crunching my gears but I thought it was just because I was over revving and trying to get it into too low a gear!

Just booked mine in (at a NEW dealer, my third in a year!!) as last night I literally crunched every time I went down/up into second. :(

NOT AGAIN!

Also had a drip come through the seals on Saturday but as it was A drip and not a flood and it was during the storm I don't think I'm going to panic just yet!

Query - you say you get the crunching when going from 3rd to 2nd -- are you doing this as a means to slow down the car? If that is the case, DON'T DO THAT! If you wish to slow down your car, a far cheaper and more effective way of doing this is to apply the brakes!

If you are doing a heel-and-toe downshift into 2nd gear and are still getting that crunch - then that's a different story.

A proper 'downshift' from 3rd to 2nd (using a heel-toe downshift with a blip of the throttle) should have no effect on the deccleration attitude of your car.

Please don't downshift -- your gearbox will thank you....

Of course she might be downshifting from 3rd to 2nd to put her foot to the floor to pass something. Maybe that wouldn't be necessary with the Turbo engine which is pokey enough in 3rd but it will still be fun nevertheless!

Or to go around a corner! ;)

Don't use second to slow down, but it does help to stop me from stalling I've found  doh!

Ok here goes the very (non) technical update:

VW had my car for 5 days total, they replaced the gears (?!?), bork(?) rings, synchronized it, gave me a new hub and oil and they threw in a krytox of my seals for good measure.

It was carried out to the specification of a technical bulletin which exists on this problem so I guess it is therefore known on these cars!!

I'm very happy with both the dealership and my new crunch free car so anyone who has crunching take it straight in for fixing and state that there is a technical bulletin on the matter too! :D

Doolallygirl - glad to hear it worked out for you! Crunching sounds and transmissions aren't a good combination!

Glad to hear you're getting decent service at last. I'll keep an ear out for the crunch.

Back in the day good drivers used to use the gears to slow down and moving through the gears was recomended to save the brakes and aid braking. But now brakes are sooo much better we are told not to.

Small dribble of water appeared this week in the rear side right window. Better get the Krytox out.

Took them long enough to make me happy but so relieved I feel I can trust people with my car now! :D

In fact I almost can't wait to take it back for it's first MOT next year!

I sometimes get a crunching when I'm shifting from 2nd to 3rd but only in about the first 3 miles of a trip. Then it's ok

I'd take it in Steph next time you have a service/mot/any other issue and just mention it as it can be fixed. I dread to think what may have happened had I not taken her in to be fixed :(
