I agree totally. Its very hit and miss. I hope you get a hit. This thread might give you some helpful info. Its similar to the unit I have.
I looked for a while and found someone in Melbourne who was importing and on selling them. Although he was probably AU$200 more then I would have paid if buying myself off ebay (or importing them myself - if you search thoroughly enough on Google you will find 5-6 resellers in Hong Kong or China) he had researched them, found the most reliable ones and sold them with a warranty.
The catch with buying these things ex Hong Kong is that they run on windows CE and can be quite buggy - likely to have funny things go wrong with them - and although the seller may fix them, it is usually at your cost to get them to Hong Kong and back to get fixed.
Mine needed a firmware fix after I got it, and the local guy was great - if you lived in Melbourne - I would recommend him to you, but since you are in England the above comment re shipping probably still applies.
Compared with the cost of the VW units, these things are great value - but only if they work first time out of the box.

Did the one you bought off of ebay come with step by step instructions?Any one know of an in dash navigation that will connect straight to the factory connections for my current radio? I have the 6 disk CD changer. I bought one off of ebay but after reading about how to install it, it seems like too much for me and I cannot afford to pay someone to install it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It did not come with instructions. I have never dealt with anything other than your standard aftermarket stereo and I have no idea what I am doing. I want something that will just plug and go.Did the one you bought off of ebay come with step by step instructions?
You know, put one foot in front of the other, one foot at a time
What makes it too difficult for you to tackle?
