Dear all, I wonder if anyone has experienced the problem I have and can help me find a solution, as four trips to my VW dealer has not!

I have an EOS from October 2007, and since the beginning I have been plagued by continuous squeaking of the roof from both sides whenever I hit the smallest of bumps in the road. As far as I can tell, it seems most likely to be the rubber roof seal moving against the top of the windows. It seems to be worst in cold & dry conditions and disappears when it is wet (the water presumably reduces the friction). Interestingly it also stops within 50 meters of my VW dealership :)

VW have tried to fix it four times - each time presumably adjusting the position of the roof, but nothing improves it. As my warranty runs out in October, I am starting to worry.

I can only assume that either the roof is wrongly positioned or loose somehow, although it opens and closes perfectly. Or, the position of the windows is either too high or too low, or something... I am quite lost.

Has anyone out there experienced anything similar? Is there a cure? Or at least a diagnosis/theory I can share with the mechanics?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Try searching this forum for "squeak" or "krytox".
Krytox is the lubricant recommended by VW and others to prevent the squeaks from the rubber seals.
Also handy for preventing/reducing water leaks.
VW recommends applying it at least twice per year.

Make sure you are well lubricated on the seals... Also, sit someone in the back and get them to push down the back of the parcel shelf where the rear window sits on it. That is where some rattles come from. I have a fix for that which is elsewhere in the forum.

I have had the same problem and am now very fed up as it has just come back from Milton Keynes HQ with no improvement after a number of trips to the dealer. I wonder if it is something with the 2007 model? Mine is May 07. I was told that they had never come across this problem before as the most common problem was leaks! The roads around my dealer (Ashford, Kent) and very smooth so that doesn't help when showing them the problem although their technician has heard the rattle and accepts that it is an issue. I don't think they can fix it except possibly by having a new roof which VW are reluctant to authorise as it is so expensive. I will let you know how I get on as I have now told them that enough is enough.

Am I correct in assuming this is when the roof is up, Ihave a My09 mdoel and I am plagues with a rattle over my ritgh shoulder when my roof is down and I go over a less than even road.

It has already been back to my retailer ona nother job but I asked them to look at this as for the other problem they had to take the roof assembly out. They found a loose wire in the side panel under the quarter light window, taped it up but the offending rattle is still there. It is back in on Monday the technician thinks it is the small rear window and somthing to do with mountings which hold this window.

I stress this is not a pop at the dealer nor technican they have been very supportive, just wondered if anyone can give me pointers for when I take it in on Monday.

For all the world it wound like the small window rattling round, has anyone had this problem.

With great respect it is more than an apparent rattle, it is in at the retaielrs for the third time today

I will however conceed that it has turned out not to be the roof, it is is the fold over/black side covering flap.

About a month after getting my car the roof started to squeek quite a bit when going over rough roads. I also found a screw in the trunk. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the screw and also tightend all the other screws/bolts/etc. in the roof mechanism. After that it was as tight as a drum and didn't squeek at all. It's been fine since then (about 1.5 years).

I had a rattle from the roof, used to bug the hell out of me. Was a metallic clanking sound. Not really loud but noticeable enough to annoy. My dealer found it though, turned out to be the rails for the sunroof. One warranty job later and silence.

Sorry Rathbod... Didn't mean to cause you offence! I used apparent as it esssentially means actual (ish)... You read what I wrote as if I said "alleged rattle"!!

If something is apparrent, it means its there/exists. However, I did use it before a noun, so I can see how I shouldn't have used it in that context. :)

Wanted to say thanks to those who have posted, and give an update. The squeaking is without doubt caused by the top of the windows against the rubber seals, and indeed lubricating the inside of the window seals with the VW special lubricant (mentioned in the owner's manual) seems to have done the job. Seems to need re-doing every now and again, but one pot of oil will last a very long time, so a bit of TLC should keep it squeak free. :)

Rattle in roof fixed

I had a rattle/squeak in the rear passenger side roof. I took it to a VW dealership. The technician removed the headliner and found several M segment bolts loose. He checked the threads for damage and there was none. He added threadlocker to the bolt threads and torqued all bolts to 30 NM. No more rattle or squeak.

Another squeaky roof

I bought an '09 EOS in August of 2014 along with a 2-year warranty. The roof always squeaked a little but, never having owned a retractable hardtop before,
thought this was normal. I had my dealership lubricate it this past winter and now the problem is worse. I now realize how many bumps there are in the roads! I am about to take it in to have them look at it and hopefully something can be done before the warranty runs out. But after hearing other stories I'm not very hopeful. Aside from lubrication, which has been done, is there anything else anyone can suggest?
Thanks.

I find that I have 'squeaks' occasionally from windows moving in their upper seals.

I just get a soft cloth, spray Auto Glym vinly and rubber care on it, push it up into the channel with a finger and run it along the whole channel. You will be surprised how much dirt will be on the cloth. do it a few times until cloth comes out reasonably clean. I then do it again with cloth pretty wet with cleaner, If you can, leave windows down for a while, let it soak in.

It does say in the handbook not to use Krytox on window seals, it would smear the windows too much anyway.

It defiantly helps in my case, but does need to be done fairly regularly. Well, it does out here due to high summer temps .

Hope that helps.

cheers.

When my roof starts to squeak I know it is asking me for seal lubrication. I do it twice a year, but if we get a long spell of hot dry weather I might do it a third time. My EOS lives outside and I've also noticed after extended periods of heavy rain, the Krytox seems to get washed away leaving the seals dry. Although I put up with it, there ought to be an alternative lube with UV inhibitor, more stick and less prone to be washed off. I haven't found it yet!

Once you have carefully done a roof service lubrication you get to know the look and feel of the seals. If you start getting 'puckering' or distortion of seals when the main roof or sunroof is closed, then it is time to lube and make them slippy again. The seals must be able to slide up against each other and keep their tubular shape - that is what the lube service is for.
