Hi all,

I've really enjoyed reading all the posts about your Eos' or is that Eoses :) ?

We're in the process of deciding what options and accessories to get; after making the decision last night to go ahead with buying our Eos :D

1. Did you get paint protection?

2. What about mud flaps - given some of our not-so-perfect roads, I think this one is a no-brainer.... do they look okay though?

3. Does anyone have trouble closing the boot single-handed? I'm only 164cm & have some difficulty reaching the top of the boot when open & needed 2 hands to close. Does the chrome strip give some 'grip' lower down?

4. Are the bi-xenon lights with cornering an excellent choice or just an expensive gimmick?

5. If you don't get sat-nav, is there still a screen with trip/radio etc., display in the centre of the dash? We seem to have the salemen with a marked lack of interest too..... I had to get the demo done by a saleman from one of the other car brands sold at the dealership, he didn't know a lot.

6. Has anyone had trouble with the front seat release pull - the thing you pull up to get the front seat to fold forward?

7. Did you get the factory fitted alarm or opt for an after-market one?

Thanks in advance,
Marianne.

Welcome Marianne,

Since some of your questions could be Australian Spec related, I'll have the first go at answering them.

1/ I didn't, and never have on a car - this is a dealer thing, not a VW thing and is one of the ways (like fabric prorection and window tinting) that dealers will use to improve their margins.

You can get this done by a specialist after you buy the car for a lot less, the only thing being of course that if something bad does happen to the paint, you will be in the middle of a bun fight between the dealer and the paint protection people. (this is, of course, extremely unlikely)

2/ Don't have them, can't comment, other than once again, never had them on previous cars, with no ill effects.

3/ There are hand hold recesses on the inside rear of the boot lid, which you should have no trouble in reaching

4/ I will let someone who has them comment - I have read they are good, but I driven along the windy bits of the Great Ocean Road a few times at night without wishing the vision to be better.

5/ All the trip information is on the MFD (multi function display) which is between the sppedo and the tacho. In Australia, we only get the full height one, where other markets can get simpler ones. Our MFD can display distance travelled, fuel economy, average speed, time travelled, (all both trip and longer term) radio/CD settings. You don't get all of these at the same time, you have to scroll through them.

The Standard setup in Australia is a AM/FM radio in the centre console with an integrated 6 CD stacker. This also displays all of the radio/CD setting and also Ipod af you get that adaptor.

If you go to the VW satnav, this replaces the standard radio unit and you only get a single CD slot. You can option a 6cd player that is fitted under the arm rest between the seats.

The Sat Nav option is expensive, and even moreso if you go with the bluetooth and ipod options - I believe all up over $4K - Simon (SJ2000) installed one recently - he will be able to advise you.

There are aftermarket ones from China that are not as good, that can be had for $700 - $1100 - ie 1/4 of the price but probably 3/4 of the overall value.

6/ The movement on the seat release is a bit awkward, but you get used to it.

7/ Didn't bother with an alarm. The chances of the car being broken into started and driven away are very low. An alarm doesn't stop smash and grab, just don't leave anything valuable in plain view. See if anyone else on the Forum gas a genuine VW one, and get info on the specific functionality of this unit.

The Eos is a great car, and you won't regret getting one, especially with Qld weather.:)

Hi there
Most of your questions have been answered elsewhere but not the bi-xenon lights question.

I have them. They are indeed very expensive. If your driving is confined to town/motorway type driving then they would really be a waste of money.

They only come into their own on quiet winding roads, when they are absolutely brilliant - provided you can get them on to full beam often. I'd get them again just for the times when I drive out in the country - provided I could afford them, because they really do cost a lot and you might find that money better spent on other extras that you'd appreciate more of the time.

Hi, I have the factory fitted one at the moment, but its not sensitive for my liking so I am actually going for a toad/clifford alarm, the clifford alarm has remote starting without having to unlock the car and also the alarm goes off if anyone goes within so many feet.

On the question of alarms, I was really tempted and two things put me off about getting an after market alarm, the first point was raised by the insurance company and the second my own observation.

I am insured with a big company, get a good deal and wanted to know if I would get a discount for getting a better alarm. I know all companies are different but this is what I was told.

Provided it is Thatcham Catergory One ( this is a standard that we use in the UK to rate the effectiveness of the alarm) then the discount is the same. However they classed it as a modification from factory standard, which actually put my insurance up by £30!!!! unreal. They also said that as it was a modification to the electrical system I would need to have it inspected by one of their technicians even though it is a very very good reputable product.

Then I thought if someone wants to have my car away no product will really stop them as they can just tow it away, even though with some the chances of getting caught, ie tracker make it easier to get caught. And I just thought, would I really want my car back if it had been stolen and left in a state, having been through this before, the car is never the same again and you always have it nagging in your mind.

So I thought sod it, keep it how it is, cheaper, no grief, still factory approved, but still what a load of pants from the insurance company.

Has anyone else encountered this, dont you think it's ridiculous?

I have them they are hardly visible and do help deflect items that the tires pick up from hitting the lower painted areas behind the wheels. They are also much appreciated by the peope who have to follow me in the rain, I wish they were required here the US for more than just large trucks.

The lights are fantastic - getting back into my wife's Golf V after driving the Eos at night I have to check to make sure the lights are on. The cornering lights at slow speed are terrific in parking areas and turning into dark streets. I have the mudflaps too and they are look fine.
