I have a RCD 500 radio unit (the one with the 6 CD changer integral to the radio).

I have installed the VW Audio Auxiliary jack kit per their instructions, and I have connected my iPod via the Aux jack.

Only problem is that I cannot get the radio unit to recognize the iPod output.

Is there some special sequence to make the connection for the iPod via the Aux jack?

Any experience in the Eos community that can point me in the right direction is much appreciated!!

Warm regards

There are no "Media settings" on the RCD 500.
All you have to do is press the CD button twice. That'll set it to the external CD Changer - the Aux input emulates an external CD changer and CD 1 is the Aux input channel.

I did once forget I was on Aux... pressed the next track button but nothing happened... I was a bit confused 'til the penny dropped...!

I thought you couldn't have an aux input with a cd changer. Is this a VW add on or aftermarket kit? Any info would be most welcome.

It wouldn't be easy

I added the Blitzsafe VW/AUX DMX V.3A aux-in adapter in our console, to replace the iPod adapter which we didn't need. Blitzsafe confirms in their literature that it can't be used with a changer. As Ninjadonkey has already mentioned, the aux-in (or iPod adapter) fools the head unit into thinking it's a CD changer.

However, if you were bound and determined to have both an aux-in in the console and a CD changer in the trunk, I think it could be done. There's about eight wires that plug into the VW harness under the console. You'd need an eight-gang switch to switch between wires coming from the aux-in jack and the wires coming from a VW-compatible CD changer in the trunk. Mount your changer in the trunk, and run the cable under the back seat, carpet and into the console. Alternatively, if you could figure out which of the wires were the CD changer's audio output, perhaps you leave the CD changer on and just switch those with the audio feed from the aux-in jack. Might have to connect the aux-in's ground while you're at it to prevent noise issues.

I'm getting pretty far afield from the OP's question, and this is undoubtedly WAY more technical information than folks want to read. I consider it a speculative exercise because it would be a royal PITA to set up. It also wouldn't be advisable to switch between sources with the power on, lest something get fried.

Given that you can put a crate's worth of ripped CDs on an inexpensive MP3 player, to me that's a sweeter solution. Plus, the Eos doesn't have much trunk space to spare. We have the in-dash CD player in our car, and we haven't used it yet. With Sirius, terrestrial radio, and MP3, we haven't had the need.

Your best bet is to do away with this ancient spinning disc technology altogether and go with one of these fangled XCarLink dohickeys instead:

http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.php?productid=9&cat=2&page=1

You arrange folders on a SD/HDD/USB Stick as follows:

CD1 - denotes CD1 (how clever)
CD2 - denotes... yep, you guessed it... CD2
and so on.. until
CD6

Then you can then arrange sub-folders under those to store all your albums and artists.
If you were to get one and use a HDD in the USB port you're best off getting a 1.8" drive as they can be powered solely by one USB port whereas most 2.5" HDDs require two USB ports to be powered.

It also has an Aux in.

I'm tempted to get the one with Bluetooth too. That way I can use hands-free if necessary too!

That's a tidy piece of kit. I like the idea of putting all my tunes onto an SD card. I'm not sure it works with my tho' as its a RCD 310. Interesting site.

Cool gadget, and it appears to have a CD changer pass-through in addition to an aux-in jack. Be great if it's small enough to tuck into the console, and use the existing connection there (at least on later model Eos). That way you wouldn't have to fool with pulling the head unit out to run their wire to the CD changer port.

Is this only referring to an after market add on?

Because I have a 6 disk changer and the AUX input. You just push the CD button twice to access the AUX input. But this is for the VW factory version.

Same Aux Problem

I have a 2008 VR6 with a factory installed 6 disc in-dash CD changer and also an AUX jack in the center console.

The radio will not recognize the AUX input. My local tech rep said to just hit the CD button twice - but this does nothing.

Once that did not work - he was at a loss as the why it would not work.

Any ideas ?

I have an aftermarket iPod adaptor that I installed with the RCD500.
This adaptor also has an aux-in socket.

I understand that if you have an external CD changer that you would have to lose it to connect an external adaptor of some form, but that should not be the case with the RCD500 as the 6-CD changer is integrated and therefore the external socket on the back of the radio is not used.

With an external adaptor connected to this socket, regardless of the brand, the RCD500 should toggle between the internal CD changer and the external device when you press the CD button, assuming that the RCD500 can "see" that there is something connected.

With the one I have, pressing the CD button will toggle between the internal CD changer and the iPod adaptor.
Pressing "Disc 5" (I think) toggles between the iPod and the aux-in sockets.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work too well with the latest generation iPods.

No ideas, but to confirm...
I have the same setup (6 CD in dash, Aux in center console), pressing the CD button toggels between CD and AUX. If you press another button the CD/Aux button leaves it in whatever mode was last used. So if I'm listening to Aux and then hit the sat button, when I press the CD button again it is still in Aux mode.

I have the VW OEM Radio with integral multi-CD changer, and it toggles between CD and EXT by pressing the CD button. First press of CD if in other mode (Radio, SAT) just drops you into where you last were (CD or EXT). Another press toggles it.

I've come to the same conclusion. I've only used the CD changer once so far-- to be sure it works. (And I did find loading it to be a bit of a bother-- you have to get the CD at just the right angle.)

Instead of carrying the top 15 or so CDs from my library in a little wallet in the car, I now bring along my top 50 or so on an ipod.
