Hi All,
coming home from the office today (roof up) my dash display was showing the boot/trunk lid was open. Stopped to check and sure enough, it wouldn't close, that little whirring noise wasn't happening where it pulls the lid tight. So the lid is permanently open only its weight keeps it down
Does anyone come across this and know what the problem maybe?
Can't see anything causing an obstruction so looks like a trip to the dealer.

Cheers, David

Hmm, mine won't open. Any chance we can meet each other half way? Not much help = might as well see the humor in these machines.

I had a problem with ny boot reclosing after opening it using the remote, also the VW boot handle was slow to return to the upright position. Lookers the VW dealer at middlesbrough replaced the whole boot release assembly without hassle and is now perfect. Take it straight back to the main dealer thats what the three year warranty is for. Hope its sorted soon for you.

Does it feel like there's an obstruction when you close it? Like if the little hooks on the sides inside the boot haven't returned back properly?? Or perhaps the have returned but are now not hooking round which is what draws the boot lid down i'm sure. When you plip the boot on the key they flick back releasing the boot, then when you shut the boot they hook back round slowly pulling the boot lid back in.

I had a case where the boot wouldnt open, I had to open the boot the other way (by operating the roof and stopping half way) to expose the little catches. They can easily be unhooked by hand and the boot lid opens. I applies a little vasaline and it was fine again. I think they can sometime get stuck.

This happens on my dads rover 75 sometimes you can unlock the boot with the key and it doesnt actually unlock it just makes a clunking noise and sometimes the catch doesnt move to shut the boot so you have to get putting it down till it catches it :)

Thanks Guys
Thanks for the thoughts, the two hooks on either side of the boot that grab the lid are in the open position and dont seem to grab no more.
She's booked into the dealer tommorrow morning. Just typical its my bitrthday tommorrow and I was taking the day off as we were planning a nice drive in to Cheshire for a walk and a pub meal and a few beers (and a drive back in the passenger seat for me). Ah well theres always another day.
Cheers, David

Hi everyone,
Took the car in today at 8.00 AM and got a phone call at 10.30 AM saying it was ready to collect. Not fixed but the boot had been secured and a new locking mechanism ordered for delivery tomorrow, so will take car back tomorrow. So got my day out after all but didn't dare use the boot or lower the roof. Will let you know how I get on.

All sorted now, they replaced the lock mechanism (thats the one just above the bumper). That was faulty and as it wasnt locking the two hooks on top weren't engaging and pulling the boot down. Good fast service from Dane VW and a lift into work as well.
Cheers, David :)

Boot lid wont close

I'm having same problem. There's no obstruction that i can see or hear. It's like the bottom of the trunk doesn't recognize when the lid is closed. The usual whirring sound that pulls the trunk lower and more securely is not happening. Ill be bringing in to dealer tomorrow; hopefully they wont need to order a whole new locking mechanism. Right now I'm driving with a wire holding down my trunk. I was afraid it would swing open on the highway...

Open the boot up, on bottom of the latch assembly that sticks down from the boot lid theres a small square visible. Push your key into this and it will reset the mechanism. You will hear the short "Whirr" noise the boot normally makes when you open it.

It shoul now shut normally.

This worked for me anyway.

I'd like to see a photo if it's possible.
Thanks!

How do you come up with stuff like this???
I had this problem yesterday and was expecting to need a trip to the dealer. However this fix did the job, so thanks for that. The only thing to note is that it needed two attempts before it fixed the problem. I had to manually move the latch in the locking mechanism in the boot lid to other position (open I think) before resetting the lock as described.

I've had the same issue recently (and also when I try and open the Boot from the key fob, it closes more or less straight away) and guess what, my warranty expired two weeks ago and Gilbert Lawson (Manchester) want to charge me £50 just to look at it! A friend of mine has spent nearly 1 hour on the phone asking them for goodwill but they completely refuse point blank - even got on to the General Manager (Graham Fletcher), so I am no longer going to that garage for my servicing / repairs. I was always on the understanding that VW Customer Service was second to none

I will give the key trick a try. Thanks for the advice. :D

I think a lot of dealers would maybe say the same, once the car's out of warranty they can't claim their costs back from VW central in MK for any work they do. :( Often, it's best talking to Milton Keynes directly for something just out of warranty.
