I know this is probably a dumb question, and that it is no doubt staring me in the face, but can somebody tell me where to find the build plate.

I would have thought it would be on the firewall, on top of the front wheel arches or around one of the doors, but if its there I haven't seen it.

On US models it is a black and silver tag on the driver's door frame by the locking mechanism. It has the serial number monthand year of build and factory location IIRC.

I saw that, but it didn't appear to have anything in it that I could interpret as a date (or month and year), only the VIN was recognisable.

What would you make of this ? :

There is a VIN number in a little "window" on the passenger side of the front windscreen under the wiper blade.
If you lift the spare wheel cover in the boot you should see a large metal plate to the left of the spare wheel that also shows the VIN number and some other model details.
Just above this plate is another small metal plate with the build date.
On the right hand side, there should be a sticker, again with the VIN number, and more information on your specific car, with some codes that identify the parts list used in the build.

I was referring to this tag
Vehicle Car Car seat Car seat cover Vehicle door

Vehicle Bumper Automotive wheel system Car Vehicle door

The build date is upper right ( in my case 08/06 or Aug 2006) factory is Portugal and Serial Number is covered by the blue. This is on the drivers side.
