My ignition lock has failed. I cannot remove my key from the ignition switch of my 2016 Eos (non KESSI) I tried several solutions stumbled upon on the internet, like juggling the keys, or allowing the key to spring back to the original position. The ignition will turn from off, to acc and start and run the car, and back off again. But the key will not release. I took it to the dealer, they said it was the housing, not the actual cylinder, and replaced it to the tune of $700 and a 6 hour wait. That evening when returning to my house, same problem, I can't get the key out. The car is in my garage with the key stuck in the ignition. VERY FRUSTRATED. Wondering if I can get a KESSI system installed, it was an option on earlier models, but I'm not sure if they offered it on the 2016's. But I do not have the touch door handles (or probably the wiring needed either).

Open to any suggestions, Thanks.

Brave person wanting KESSI!

Would you rather have a simple key and fob which is easier and cheaper to fix, or add an extra layer of KESSI complex electronics you will never fix yourself, more likely to leave you stranded and according to recent press reports, can be hacked?

Here's what you can do: As long as the fob and immobiliser works and you have a spare key. If the spare key has had less use, get the blade copied at any decent key copy shop as a backup. Replacing the ignition lock and immo coil if not separate isn't a hard job and there's no tricky coding to do. When you complain about garage repair costs, it's always a good idea to find the part numbers and get V.W part prices first. Then you can evaluate what proportion of the cost is labor and what you might save doing it yourself. DIY assumes you have the skills and knowledge to do it without breaking parts, costing you more, or having to get a dealer to put right bad DIY work.

Same problem. I noticed the button on the shifter was stuck in when in park. I fiddled with it until it popped out and voila the key could be removed. Now to check why the knob is sticking. Probably needs lubrication.

At first, it's most important to find out why the key can't remove for the ignition. Then it's will easier to solve this problem. If it's not possible any way then bettuer to call a locksmith.

AFIK there is no magic holding a key in the ignition. However, drivers new to V.W don't always understand that after parking when there is tension on steering from the tires with no power steering, the key will be trapped by the steering lock. It becomes second nature on most EU cars (except KESSI) to rock the steering wheel at the same time as removing the key. You can try this out on a working lock: Turn off the ignition, leave the key in, put tension on the steering wheel then try removing the key, it probably won't come out!

If a key still remains trapped in the lock when steering wheel tension is removed, it is probably caused by a damaged steering lock holding it?
