hi

The boot shelf you need to close in order to take roof down, each side there is a little catch you need to ensure are closed on the boot shelf.

The metal incert of the left hand side catch keeps popping out, has anyone else had this happen?

Hi Cam,

This happens to me at regular intervals. I posted at thread in the Tech QA forum which may help here.

I've not got around to fixing it yet.....

Hi Cam
Same thing happened to me, left hand catch as you stand at the rear of car. I fixed it by re-seating the metal spring in the housing and pushing it firmly home with a small electrical screwdriver. If you look really close there are a couple of small lumps which retain the metal when it is fully inserted. Been over 5 months since I did this and not had a problem since.
Hope this helps.

The same happened to me and I got fed up. I have mentioned to my dealer whilst they had the car for something else and they replaced the whole boot cover under the warranty as they could not order the clips separately. I was told that it would come from Portugal via Germany. Talking about carbon footprint, I felt almost guilty for mentioning it.

The other little anecdote relates to one of the string at the back (at the bottom of the C pillars) which holds the lining in place as you operate the roof up and down. I have noticed that one of the strings was on its last leg. As a result, they had to change half of the lining; the reason being it is quite complicated to fit a new string, especially as VW do not provide instructions, they are having to take half of the lining down to mirror the other half. I said to them, by the time you guys have finished with my car, it will be almost brand new again!

Hi all,

Please be aware that the left hand catch has a proximity sensor that has to be engaged if you want to operate your roof.

If the knob on the cover is not in the catch, the system will think you don't have the cover in place due to too much stuff in the boot and therefore you cannot amaze the bystanders.

I have the same problem too! Why is it always the left hand thread? ( something to do with the sensor I suppose ). Next time it pops out I'm going to superglue it back in.................

I have the same problem but with both clips. It is getting more difficult to reinsert them as they are becoming a bit distorted. Have tried Ducktape this time.

Same happens here about once every 3 months, always the right clip, I mean the tiny 'close to U-shaped' metal bit that pops out of its plastic or hard metal hosting place...
Again forgot to ask VW when I visited them last time for wty extension...

Fixed!

Hi
eventualy decided to show the dealer the faulty clip that kept popping out from the boot inside cover...
Looks like VW does not have a replacement part number for the clip, so the dealer has replaced the whole 'cover', including a new clip, under (extended) warranty!
Let's see how it holds or wears out now!

The left clip on mine popped about every other month once I got around to a dealer service visit I had that on my list of items and whatever the dealer did it has been fine ever since.

Same thing is going to happen to mine next week as they cant just order the new clip :(

I have asked for them to look into screwing the catch into place when they replace the boot cover.

Inner Boot Lid Clips

I mentioned to my dealer during the first service last month that both clips were popping out regularly & becoming distorted from my amateur attempts to replace them. He had had previous complaints about the problem & was able to order a pair (without the bootlid) & fitted them for me.
The left one has since popped out again but at least its a nice NEW clip (but not for long).

I had the same problem with the left one. The first time the dealer replaced the clip under warranty.

It still happened, so I put it back in and glued it. Then the right one also came out, which I also glued in.

Now no trouble, but what I had noticed is that when you lift the cover by the centre handle as you are supposed to, the entire cover pulls inwards, which makes the clips pull to the centre of the boot instead of straight up. This effectively pulls the clips out of place each time you lift the cover. Eventually the clips come right out.

You can actually place your 2 hands either side of the cover and lift both sides together. this stops the sideways movement of them and they tend not to move out of place.

Hi
been a while since I visited the forum... So now that the clips hols firmly in place, I have witnessed a strange behaviour in three occasions: the boot's lock would open (and lift slightly up) upon depressing the key, then immediately re-lock... dangerous when one has the hand below, trying to open the boot... Will start a new thread on this...

It might be just a matter of latch adjustment. Unless it's adjusted to the limit the weight of the bootlid is enough to relock itself as soon as it's been opened.

I have had mine adjusted 4 times now and it lasts about 1 year each time before it needs to be done again (October 06, Oct 07, Oct 08 and now Oct 09!)

It's very annoying when you unlock the boot (trunk) using the door switch, get out and go around the back with armfuls of stuff just in time to hear it locking itself again... Not slamming the door often does the trick although my Dealer says it's the vacuum when you open the driver's door which sucks the bootlid back down. I don't believe him though..

Thank you for this observation - this is the cause of the problem from checking my partner's car. The solutions are to use the two-handed lifting technique or stiffen the cover with a custom brace across the top to stop the cover flexing when lifted by the centre handle. A smear of white Lithium grease [non-staining grease] on the clip surfaces will reduce friction thus minimising the force needed to release the clips which will reduce the flexing of the cover.

We had the same problem, they fixed it with a software upgrade, also their are plastic piece in the trunk latches that broke. you are suppose to let the trunk lcose itself.
