Has anyone done their own oil change? If so, what oil filter did you use and what was the cost. I called my dealer and the filter they use is VW part number 06D 115 562 and costs $14.07 USD. The dealer is 90 miles away and I would rather buy local if possible. Any tips or advise would be greatly appriciated.

I think you are correct on that score .... I definitely prefer enjoying it to maintaining it. The rights of laziness come with old age!

Quite so. My membership of the Dirty Fingers Brigade lapsed some years ago! Modern cars and home maintenance just don't seem to go together!

Much better, SHF! :) :)

My new Eos is due to arrive about 2 weeks after my birthday. I will have earned more rights (but not quite as many as you have. :) ) We are residing in the same decade, though, and therefore are "the new 40". Enjoy! R

I asked my mechanic that did my last oil change about doing it myself. He told me the new oil cartridge requires a sort of wrench that "releases" the filter and drains the oil that must come out before you remove the fluted filter. He said you can do it yourself but you may curse a bit more than usual and may come away with less skin on your knuckles.

I have always done my own oil, but I threw in the towell when I saw the work involved in the Eos. An oil change for my Eos is usually about $64 per 10k miles at the dealer. Not a bad deal when most people still do their 3k changes for maybe $20 on their own.

changed mine

I changed my oil a few weeks back,

Somewhat of a pain, took me 2 hrs as I was "feeling" my way through.

The one pain is the protective pan that has to be removed, many screws and bolts.

The oil cartridge can be drained w/o the "special tool" but I was a bit concerned as there is a plastic device (spring loaded) that has to be delt with.

Beyond those two items the process is standard fare.

It cost 14.00 for the filter and 5 qts cost $6.50 each. So at ~46.00 for the materials. ~60 to 80 is not so bad.

Still enjoy the process and will no doubt do it again.

Search on VW Vortex and you will find a pretty good DIY, on a passat I believe, but close enough!

just a couple of pennies worth from me!

FYI;

I spoke with my local dealer and asked what type of oil they use. My local dealer only uses Castrol full synthetic for $62.00. Normally, I do my own automotive work; however, comparing the dealer cost to the materials cost I have chosen to put the liability on the dealer. Good luck, let us know how it goes...

I really want to do mine, but there isn't much info on whether i need to replace the sump plug, have to jack up before removing the under engine cover or anything else!

I am getting the car in a couple of weeks, so would love some documented experience and even photos if anyone could oblige!

Sump nut... Oil pan bolt, right...

The shop manual states that this must always be replaced. When I asked the dealer I was presented with a new washer (crush washer). The original washer was in fine shape and I simply used the original plug and washer. I have driven 2000 miles and no leaks.

I have read that the original washer can be cut from the plug and a new one used. There are retailers out there that will sell a new plug and washers as well. Seems like a waste to simply throw away a perfectly good item "just because".

Still the "official" manual (Bentley repair manual) does state that one needs to replace it...

I guess the advice is to have one on hand should you need to replace it and if not you will have it for the future!

Could not find a "official" VW part number in the Shop manual. I beliewve they a somewhat standard though

Have a look here;

http://www.metalnerd.com/cat04.htm Go to the bottom of the page

See this....Part MNLKIT - M14 Magnetic Drain Plug Kit. Reasonable money and is magnetic!

I will be trying this!

If I come across an "official" VW Part I will post.

Quite expensive but looks a nice bit of kit. It should pay for itself quite quickly if you set it against the cost of labour at a VW dealership. However I presume you will still have to get under the car and take all the bits off to remove the filter if it's to be replaced as well.
Perhaps I'm wrong and it can be changed from under the bonnet without removing the protective plate.

If not, is it not a lot of money to pay just to remove excess oil?

You're right... If I wanted to change the filter, I would have to take all the bits off, but just to remove excess oil, it's worth the money because I don't have to jack the car up and replace the not & washer just to remove 500ml!!!
