Hi all,

Is there a way to get detailed engine specs from a reg number, or a chassis number?

I have placed a deposit on a car, the dealers details say it's a 2.0 T, but their same web page advert says 2.0 FSI.

When we rang our insurance company they wanted to know if it was a T or not...

I know I could ask the salesman, but wanted an independent view, or one from a VW database if possible.

I've done this with my S-Max, by accessing the Ford ETIS system.

regards,

Greg

Don't know how to tell from a Reg or Chassis No but to answer your question, yes there is a 2.0 FSI and a 2.0 T-FSI.

They are fundamentally different as the T-FSI is turbocharged whilst the FSI is not, hence is much more powerful (abt 200 bhp compared with abt 150).

You need to know which car you are getting...

Indeed... There are two ways to make sure... Best way is to look at the engine... The FSI just says FSI on a small plaque on the engine. The T-FSI engine is completely covered and says TURBO FSI!

On the back, the normal one says 2.0 FSI... The Turbo one says 2.0FSI...

I hope that helps!

One of our members recently posted the following link for decoding the vehicle build plate - haven't got time to search right now so my apologies for not acknowledging you:

This is a very useful site that also provides access to a lot of other relevant information about VW Group vehicles.

I would have thought that the turbo would cost a reasonable amount more than the standard motor. Check the list prices for both and the model descriptions on the VW website and see how both compare with the contract. There are also likely to be trim differences (although I can't be sure 'cos we only get the 2.0T and 2.0TDi is Australia, both in the same spec level, with a few options)

Either way, if the contract says you've ordered a turbo, make sure thats what you get.

That is spot on, the VIN decodes to:

POWER / KW / HP / RPM 147 KW / 200 HP AT 5000 RPM
TORQUE / RPM 280 Nm AT 1800 RPM
CYLINDERS / VALVES 4 CYLINDERS / 16 VALVES

Which is the Turbo version, so I'm very pleased :) The price was very good compared to other dealers, hence my concern!!

Greg
