Orderd my Krytox from GBRtech, thanks to the forums!
Now I was wondering what people have used to clean the seals beforehand? GBR tech suggest Meths, just wondered what "real" world experiences people had?
Hi Greg I used that link below to do my seals, and my dealer said just clean them with a damp cloth or sponge. no solvents at all as they damage the seals http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3087297
Seems to be a bit patchy that some dealers / countries seem to supply sachets swabs (in the wheel space in the boot). In the UK in my experience you buys your own. Incidentaly its not part of the service routine at least in my garage. Get it from GBR tech for best value.
I use lighter fluid (clean refined petrol) as a solvent and it works fine with no residue. I certainly would never use methylated spirits thats asking for trouble. The ethanol adulterants (pyridine etc.) could cause damage to the seals eventually.
i usually clean the seals with clean water + cloth. thats all.
some tough parts might need a soft sponge for 'rubbing' off some funny stains tho.
for the seals, i lube it every 2 months. Tropical Singapore has a big share of rain and shine, thus the seals seem to wear off faster, esp when i park in the open 90% of the time
I have to be honest and say that I wait until I start to hear creaks and other noises from the roof at the top of the windsrceen. I then know that it is time to lubricate the seals with Krytox.
Once lubricated, the noise disappears and I have never had a leak.
Detergent and water is fine as well but as you say old wax hanging around from any over zealous polishing will come off fine with a little clean petrol. However to be fair the seals that really need to be supple tend to be on the inside and there is little chance of wax getting on these. The lubricant will also get through any residual wax anyway.
Mine came from the dealer with the little treatment pack that I have seen mentioned a few times on this forum. It consists of two cleaning pads and a Krytox pad.
I am guessing that the cleaning pads are isopropyl alcohol.
