It was a gorgEOuS 80 degrees here this weekend and much top down driving was had. On two occasions, though, when lowering the top, I got the error message "Close boot lid!". At first I thought this was the luggage compartment cover (which WAS closed) but then later realized that that generates a separate error message ("Close luggage compartment cover!") --which I did not see. So it must have been telling me the trunk wasn't latched. However, the trunk WAS latched. I opened the trunk, took a look inside, saw nothing unusual, and closed it again and all was fine. I would have thought nothing of this except that it happened a second time.

I do have the SmartTop module installed (installed about a year ago) and I'm hoping this is NOT the problem (I wasn't using the remote at the time I got the message) but wondering if anyone has had similar or has ideas.

Not a big fan of "intermittent" electrical issues so I'm hoping this is not the start of one.

Hi Darren,

Can you remember how you closed the boot [trunk] lid the last time before you encountered the error message?

Is it possible you either closed it harder or softer than usual thus defeating the self-closing mechanism? I suspect this might be a possible explanation as the self-closing also activates the switch that confirms the boot is closed.

I'll try to pay attention.....I pretty much always lay the trunk down and let it self close, but it it possible I wasn't paying attention and closed it harder. Now that you mention it, I remember hearing the whir of the self closing taking a bit longer but just can't remember if it was that sound before the error message.

I tried it again tonight. It seems to generate the error message when I do use the Smart Top by remote. The lights flash and then I get 5 quick flashes (error message) and no top operation.

If I then get in the car, start it up, and go to open the roof, I get the close boot lid message.

However, the one touch (in the car) feature still works and the top will raise and lower fine so long as I don't use the remote operation.

Any ideas?

???? Defective Trunk Lid Switch???

Got some IT support from mods4cars. They are great :)
Today I had a successful opening of the roof with the remote control. I also successfully closed the roof when I got home with the remote control. After opening the trunk to get out my gym bag...a few seconds AFTER opening the trunk, I heard the whir of the automatic trunk mechanism.....very UNcharacteristically a few seconds late.....maybe it is a defective trunk lid switch as tech support from Mods4Cars suggested. If I have to go to the dealership for this repair under warranty, does anyone know where the trunk lid switch is???? Will they see the SmartTop controller when they replace the switch??? Trying to avoid trouble/questions.

Went to the dealer today....of course the problem could not be replicated. They checked everything out, raised and lowered the top a bunch of times and no error messages. I guess that is good news. The problem was intermittent at best so we'll have to see how it goes in the near future.

While waiting, my 5 1/2 year old and I chatted with the salesgirl we bought from 15 mo ago. My daughter was interested in sitting in the new Beetle (a foreshadowing of what's to come in the next 11 years?????). The best though was her getting in the back of the new CC and screaming with delight, "Dad, this is just like a limosine!".

Hello I own a 2009 EOS and I've been getting the same close boot lid message. Sometimes another error message (system fault Cov. Top! Workshop) eventually after opening and closing the lid a few times I can get the top to work but it tends to get frustrating. Any ideas or suggestions?

Searching the forum is always a good idea because the chances are a problem has been discussed before:

http://www.vweosclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1201&page=2&highlight=trunk+lock

I seem to remember when I posted my reply, that all the wires went into the trunk cover lid (the moving part!). If that's the case, then the trunk closed signal will come from the lock mechanism and wiring. I cannot believe they would waste a Hall sensor on the trunk lid and there are no signs of any switches like they used for the internal cover.

Therefore two possible solutions: Movement in the wiring loom from the lock mechanism has made a wire weak, break and intermittent, a switch in the lock assembly coming on when the lock motor reaches its fully closed position or the locking quadrant closes, or their adjustments.

Since I showed how you can simulate the latch closing with the trunk open, you should be able to wiggle/waggle a few things whilst peering at the center console?
