I know there have been several threads on this subject , but I,m still a little confused in the correct use of this DSG box. I have the DSG box in a TDi sport and have until now been selecting neutral at lights and engaging the handbrake. Some people are saying leave it in drive and foot the brake, others select park and some like me are using nuetral and the hand brake. I,ve had various explanations from mecahanics on the effects of each method on the gearbox all contradicating each others theory ! Some one must know the method of use which has the least wear and tear and thoughts for economy ?? Dont they ?

In a standard Auto, you need to leave it i n drive... If you keep disengagging and reenganging Drive, you will wear out the clutches which engage the gears.....

I am not completely familiar with the way the initial gear engagement is done, but it is not like an Auto. When your foot is on the brake, the cluches are completely disengaged, so I am sure less wear will occur if you leave it in Drive and simply use the brake.

Auto gearboxes were designed to stay in Drive, so we have to assume that, although the DSG is different, it must have been designed with the knowledge that people who use it would be familiar with Auto's and thereore drive it like one (I do!!)

Nope... I will always hold it in Drive as one would with a standard Auro.. But people have their own preference. You can't really advise on something as personal as this. I have always driven Auto's and if you want them to last, you don't keep going from Drive to Neutral and back every time you stop.. You will wear out the engagement clutches and that is EXPENSIVE!!!

I have just checked the Technical Documentation and I can stand by what I said above... It is essential to hold the foot brake when the car is stationery in Reverse or Drive or Sport modes (Inc Manual Mode)....

It is not recommended to put in Neutral at traffic lights. You should just leave it in Drive with the Foot Brake on...

If you release the foot break (on a steep upward gradient for example), the clutches will overheat and disengage. You should not allow this to happen...

If you consult page 123 of the manual for the car, it will have basic information.

Thanks for that info I,ll go with that method from now on. Having not used an auto before I had this notion in my head that sitting on the brake it would be like sitting with the clutch engaged on a standard manual car and end up burning the clutch out ! Not that mechanically minded so glad you could put me right, just hope I havent put any undue wear n tear in the 4500 miles I,ve done so far.

Traffic Lights

I have been driving DSG for 3 years and agree with sij that you leave it in park and hold on the footbrake.

Dont keep putting into neutral.

My previous car, a new Passat, even had a button to keep you stationary in traffic which applied the auto handbrake until you touched the accelerator, but still left in D.

Hope that helps !

Does anyone notice the car slightly rolling back on a hill though? I have had auto' before and if anything they creep forwards? Very annoying as my fav shopping centre involves an upward helter skelter style entrance to the carpark, and I have to actually use the handbrake on occassions as car rolls back a bit.
Any feedback will be very welcome.

Hi Lisa!
Think it is a common complaint .... think I saw someone commenting who lives in San Francisco. They must surely have a problem. I live in country with rolling hills, so it can be a challenge. Most of the time I just move my foot over to the brake pedal to hold car, then move it back quickly when ready to take off again. Get used to it after a while. Cheers!

It is quite annoying to be sat stationary at traffic lights at night when the prat in front of you has their foot on the brake all the time - one of the biggest problems we have in this country now.

Total disregard for anyone but themselves!
