Creaks

Took delivery of my 2007 TDI this morning.

When I test drove it it was pouring with rain. I was very impressed how refined and enjoyable it was to drive with the roof up.

On collection (in the dry) I noticed creaks coming from the roof ALL THE TIME.:(

Even my wife who is less particular than me found it very annoying.

It needs some lube!!! Although if you've just picked it up, I'd take it back to the garage to get them to do it for you!
Phoned the VW dealer that I bought it from. Booked it in for Wednesday to have the seals luricated. Apparently (and surprisingly) lubricating the seals is not included in the list of jobs to be done in any service.

The salesman and the workshop manager promised that the seals would be done prior to my purchase, but looking at them its obvious that they didn't. How come they didn't notice the creaking. I just hope they make a good job of it and use VW Lubricant G052 172A1.

Took it out with the roof down this evening. 5.5C. No hat. Heater on max. Pure magic. The 2 litre diesel pulls like a train. Engine noise is not an issue.

Sort out the creaks and it could be the perfect car.

Hey Ho.
As a new owner it's worth mentioning to you that the lubricant can leave the windows looking a bit grubby for a few washes, as any water tends to leave an oily residue on them.

Small price to pay, and it really is worth it for the car!!!
Eosman,
Did you purchase yours from a VW dealer?
When I took delivery of mine in December (from a VW dealer) I asked specifically about lubricating the seals & was told that this was done during the annual service & I would not need to purchase any lubricant.
I am taking this information with a pinch of salt & intend to order my supply of Krytox very shortly with a view to lubricating the seals every 3 - 4 months. Prevention is better than cure!

Yes, I got it from a VW dealer.

Perhaps some VW dealers are better at dealing with the Eos than others. If they have have had customers with seal issues they now know how to solve and, more importantly, prevent them. I guess mine is not one of 'em.:(

Future lubricating of the seals will definately be done by myself.
My US manual states that lubricating the seals is an owner maintenance item, not a normal ʻserviceʻ item for the VW shop during service visits.

Even so, my dealer has performed it for me free of charge when I have asked them to do it during a normal service check.
I am very surprised that the lubricating of seals is not done automatically with each service since leaking (and in my case, creaking) seals is very much a issue in this Forum.

Since the dealers don't do it on a regular basis it begs the question when mine is done this Wednesday whether (a) they know how to do it and (b) if they use the correct lubricant.

My confidence in VW dealers is pretty low at the moment since both the salesman and the service manager said it would be done.
My dealer put a pack of three krytox wipes plus a vw bottle of krytox in the car from new and do the seals at every service. If your not happy with the service you get from your dealer you have the right to go to VW customer care how will jump on them cos times is hard in the car market and VW don't want customers walking away from the brand.
Good news. My creaks have gone.:D

The VW dealer I bought it from have done a good job in making it quiet.

On the plus side, when it creaked I just had to drive it with the roof down to avoid the terrible noise.

Just spoke the nice man from GBR regarding the purchase of Krytox so that the next time I can do the job myself.

I guess the regular application of seal lube on the Eos is comparable to having to adjust the chain on my KTM motorcycle. Messy but necessary and often has to be done between services.

Eosman,
I also spoke to that nice man at GBR Technology, Alan Follett, yesterday to order my supply of Krytox. He was extremely helpful & was very ready with advice. Seems he gets lots of calls from Eos owners! Krytox supplies arrived in the post this morning.
I am still leak free (touch wood), having thoroughly examined carpets & spare wheel well today. However, prevention is better than cure so I'm waiting for a nice, sunny day to drop the top, apply the lubricant & give it time to soak in & dry before raising the top again.
Creeks!

Yep!
Creeks!
Took my 2008 in with 6700 miles on it for 12 month service because the car said service now! It had its oil changed at 1000 miles, 3000 miles, and now at 6700. I asked the dealer why so often. The dealer told me they recommended more service than the car manual, warrantee requires. I made it clear to reset my computer to be requesting service as the warrantee suggests, and not have to come back and spend $$$ so often.
Synthetic has been put in at every change. I can say the car burns no oil like others I have seen on this site.
Well, the roof was creeking and asked them to lube the seals and the dealer said they would under warrantee. Well, never happened. Instead the dealer took the roof apart and tightened bolts and removed a shim. I was having a sh_t fit! I never told them to take it apart and never authorized them to do so! It still creeks, and if it leaks, I am going to be real pis_ed!
I was nice at the dealer and took it in stride, but now am thinking of taking it to another dealer in the state for service.
Thanks,
Lopaka:mad:

I would find another dealer. My dealer has me come back every 4000 miles for oil changes. They're the closest dealer to VW's American Headquarters in Virginia so I would think that they're doing the right thing.

Between the excessive services and misunderstanding with the roof, I'd have pause for continuing with them.

BTW, I krytox my seals 2-3 times per year and that keeps them pretty well off. The only time I typically get creeks is if the weather is extremely cold (below 28F).
Why are American VW dealers insisting on oil changes more often than in the UK. Here you can choose to have LongLife intervals which can be up to 2 years, but if your journeys tend to be short it's recommened a oil change at one year or 10,000 miles (whichever comes first).

I find it amazing that any VW dealer anywhere in the world does not know that Krytox lube will cure creaks in a Eos. Complain to VW USA.
Mine tries to have me come in every 5,000 miles for oil changes, but I check my levels and go in at VW recommended times as per my owner's manual checklist. Overall my dealer usually gets it right most of the time when there is a problem. Seems our dealers really look out for themselves more than their customers. Putting Krytox or whatever on the roof seals isn't a priority nor a VW required service for the dealers so if they do it, more likely than not you have to pay for it unless the dealer really likes you. Lopaka's issue isn't uncommon though but I hope he can get a good dealer with a good service department. There aren't all that many VW dealers where he lives.

It's good for their Profit & Loss account?

Yesterday I had to take my Eos to service the top. When dropping the top, the headliner that folds out of the way was getting hung up and stopping the process (needed the strings that fold it out of the way, adjusted). While I was there the service advisor handed me a package from VW that contained a three step system for maintaining the seals for the top. Three small packages that each contain a cloth similar to a moist towelette you use to wipe your hands. Step 1 is to clean the seals, step 2 is to condition the seals and step 3 is the krytox to lubricate the seals. Instructions are in eight languages. The service advisor didn't say if these packages were going to be a "give away" or if they were going to be available at the parts counter. The package says to apply once a year, tells where to find service instructions in the manual so you know which seals to lubricate and also explains the application process.
While there, they installed a new "low pressure fuel sensor", which I have had much problem with. They also had another "service bulletin" to replace a cover on the engine, but I left before the paper work was done, so I can't tell you just what that was, the paper work is being mailed to me and I will tell you when I get it.
I also had them check my tail lights because dust was getting in to the housing. They found that both tail light housing were cracked in the same place allowing dust to get inside the light. These are LED lights and the entire housing has to be replaced. They didn't have any in stock, so that will done later, under warranty.

It would be great if you had the VW part number, as this would be possibly avaialbel in other markets, I am presuming you are in the states.

An enquiry to my friendly local dealer has provided the follwing. I think the part number is 000096331 - Eos Rubber Care Kit, it retails in the UK at £6.27 + VAT, it is I understand a stock item which you can buy

Derek
This package says "Special rubber cleaner set for CSC and sliding roofs". Distributed by Volkswagen of America, AMAG Automobil-und Motoren AG (German I believe) and by Vortex GmbH. Only thing that looks like a part number is: 000 096 331. Yes, I am in the USA. This product also has an expiration date of 10/2010.
