The cup holder on the centre console I've found a tad disappointing. However, the sliding top is useful and I use it for petrol receipts and loose change. The point of a bottle opener somewhat escaped me.

I was lying in bed this morning (5 am !!) and it came to me. I did wait until I got up to try it. The bottle opener slides into the slots in the side of the cup holder and its grips the cup nice and snug.

I'm sure this wasn't covered in the manual !!!!

Maybe its something on the new model. Anyway, heres the bottle opener.

Here it is in its storage place.

Here it is in cup holder mode.

and finally, all tucked awy out of sight.

I'm not sure the last time I needed a bottle opener. Cup holder is useful tho.

That looks completely different from mine which has 2 round holes for cups/bottles and no sliding cover. That looks more like the one on the Golf to me. Obviously it's been changed on newer models.

Personally I find the cupholders useless as they are for LHD cars and any bottle sitting in them gets right in the way of the gearchange. The centre console is identical whether car is LHD or RHD so obviously it's not worth spending the money to 'mirror' the console for RHD markets. Poor show.

To be honest, I use it as a secure place to put my petrol receipts and loose change. I normally have a bottle of water in the car if I need a drink. The door pockets have a neat layout designed perfectly for bottles but that's for another thread.

I'm not sure which is more useless, my version which can't hold a coke bottle to save its life ( lets be honest I guess its that size bottle that most people have in their car ?!) or that version with a bottle opener ?! the only bottles I know that need a opener contain beer and I can't see many of us needing that in our cars ?!

Imagine the meeting at the VW Innovation department. The big boss man has arrived to see what exciting changes the design team has come up for the new 2009 Eos model.

A bottle opener that doubles up as a cup holder....

If VW was a UK company he'd have got a £10million bonus for thinking of that one!

Too true Norman. Alternatively if they didn't like the idea he would have got the £10million as a golden handshake to leave (plus a good pension!!!)

In my part of the world, they would have been sacked for not including one
