I have the base model display - outside temp, trip kms, etc. When I have the automatic transmission in "D" am I supposed to see a number in the lower right of the display indicating which gear the transmission is in as it goes through its paces? The car manual seems to suggest that this is the case and now I am wondering whether there is a fault in the system. Of course when using the transmission in manual shift mode I have the display of the 6 gears with the operational gear highlighted ... I am questioning here what the display should show me about the gear when in "D".

I have DSG, when in "D" it always shows the current gear in the bottom right corner of MFD.

I seem to remember a thread on this subject a while back (or it may have been on vwvortex).
I think there were reports of a software update that somehow "lost" the gear display on the MFD.

For 2008 US and I believe Canadian model Eos received a software update that eliminates the numeric portion of the gear selected display. It is part of a software update that is supposed to help with a shifting issue. The bad thing is though if you take in your older Eos (like mine) for a shifting issue or if you take your Eos in for any service and they apply any updates, you may also lose the display.

We were told by the dealership that our Eos needed an update. They did mention the display would disappear. I talked my wife into waiting. She wanted the fix, but we did not have the problem. It seems like we have to have it done within a year. I forgot what it would fix, seems like the check engine light may come on. I just like to see what gear I'm in, I might need to pop it over and downshift.

Engine Light

I just did my 20K mile service on my EOS. My engine light was coming on and I asked the dealer to check it out. They told me it was a software issue and they could update the software but my transmission gear would no longer be displayed. I told them to pass - I'd put up with the light. They said I could get the update later if I wanted.

My question: Was there any reason I would want the update ?

If you like the display as is with the numbers, then don't change anything. It would be nice to know if they were giving you the update because they were actually fixing the problem or if they thought it would fix the problem. I have had just about every software update my dealer knows of and I still have my original display with the numbers. There were some changes between 07 and 08 US models with the gear display software, but no one really knows why. The only thing of concern is that you might actually have a problem.

My 2008 with DSG does not display the current gear while in drive, Guess VW feels Americans don't care to know. Just put it in drive and go!

Technically speaking, it doesn't matter what gear you are in, as long as its the right one! ;)

It's really a gimmick at best! You can see/hear from the revs whether you need to change up/down like in the olden days!

I never even look at the gear number on my display.

It torques me off...

When I bought my '08 Eos last November, the "infamous" software update had already been preformed. Most of the time I would agree that the gear information is just not needed. However, occasionally I wonder what gear I'm in, driving up a slight hill and most of the time I haven't a clue since 4th, 5th, and 6th gears are so close together. I think it's BS that VW can not come up with a software update to redisplay the gear information while in Drive.

My wife's son just bought an Audi A3 that has what appears to be the same engine and transmission and his display shows current gear information. Still, its a great car and I can live with it the way it is.
