When the EOS roof opens or closes the action is started or ended by the two flaps that popup or close.
On my '08 EOS the left flap opens and closes after the right and is more jerky in its movement. Subjectively this disparity may be increasing.
Can others comment on their observations? Would you mention if it's an 07 or 08 version as this could be relevant.

Ours open at the same time with a nice fluid motion and no jerkiness. Perhaps you should visit your dealer just to check it out?

I think mine pretty much open at the same time.... If it's just a fine tuning thing and not causing any issues, I would always think twice about taking it to a dealer....

I plan to NEVER involve a dealer if I have roof issues unless I have no choice... I have a rattle, but am happier to put up with it that let the dealer tweak around with a mechanism they know nothing about....
My two rubber feet from the front wind break thing have also come off.... VW have ordered a new part (which is the WHOLE part).. I have said to them that I will come and take the rubber feet off the new part and fit them to my old part without removing anything.... NO WAY am I going to let them remove the wind break, seals etc.... They may never be right again!!!

Thanks for the replies guys.
Currently it is just a minor thing. The roof otherwise operates fine. The difference between the flaps closing is about 0.5 seconds. Certainly noticeable, but not a problem.
I'll just watch for now unless it noticeably worsens, especially as I have the Smarttop roof mod installed :D (the flap disparity pre-dated the mod installation, so it's not related).
I'm going to have to change the mod when I'm sent an updated unit. I may remove it completely then if I want a dealer to have a look. I see you reasons for not suggesting a dealer get involved, there are several horror stories of them never working again.

My two rubber feet from the front wind break thing have also come off....
Simon, is that the bug catch thing on the top of the windscreen you are talking about?

Also, I can 100% guarantee that the SmartTop MOD has nothing to do with it... The SmartTop just sends signals that the control buttons do, it doesn't control the function of the roof itself, this is all mechanical and linked. It is probably that the metal wire which releases to open the flap may be slightly longer on one side. As long as it is straight vertical and straight horisontal an it's extremes, then it should be fine. I would only be worried if there looked like a chance that it may get in the way of the rear windscreen as it comes down.... As long as it is fully vertical in time, it should be fine.

How is the rest of the mechanism (particularly the timing and smoothness of the tailgate unlatching before and then opening after the rear windscreen is out of the way?

(I am assuming you mean the small flaps which cover the linkage for the back windscreen....)

Simon, I think you are pretty spot-on.
To clarify, as it may not have been clear to others. During opening of the roof process the last thing to happen is 2 flaps go down. The same 2 flaps raise at the start of the roof closing process. It is those flaps that are out of sequence (slightly)

You suggested it may be the wire. Here is a pic of the slower flap

When compared to the other side the wire does indeed look looser.

Here is the url to a short youtube video of the end of my roof opening to show the flaps slightly offset.
Note that the boot also goes down one side before the other, but only by a fraction of a second.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ4eQfPxcHQ

I can't see any easy way to slightly shorten the wire myself. It looks like a very local problem, not affecting, or likely to affect the rest of the roof.
I plan to leave it unless others suggest otherwise.

David.

Hi,

Looks to me like the wire might be a red herring... They are moving at exactly the right time, it's just the passenger one is stopping mid way probably due to a minor misalignment in the boot locking mechanism. I believe that the wire which pulls the flap down is attached to the cylindrical lock which wraps itself round the pivot which grips it (a bit like a car door mechanism).....

I think the delay is because as the lock engages, it is hitting the pivot, pulling it down further to then wrap round it to engage. Hence the delay...

It may be worth getting the dealer to look at it, or even better, send your video to VW Tech Support and get them to review it.... Let them advise if it should be looked at.... It is quite possible that it may correct itself in due course.. Please also check that the boot rubber around that area is installed correctly and not stopping the lid from closing correctly at that point. This can be looked at when the boot lid if fully open....

Also, hate to say it, but when you installed the MOD, did you make sure that the boot rubber and other trims were fitted back correctly, including the supports on the left (The plastic cap on the little arm and the rubber cap)...

If some boot rubber seal is raised in that area, it can cause similar symptoms in my opinion.

Also, a Video of the whole open and close process may be useful too if you could oblige! Try and film from the front drivers side (similar position to where your video ended).... Don't go to any trouble if you can't, but it may be useful to review....

I'll check the rubber seals, but as the flaps behaved this way from day one I doubt it is something related to seal repositioning when doing the mod.
I noted it in the showroom, but did not think to ask - duh!

I will double check tomorrow in the light, as well as taking a further video as you suggested.

Hi,

It does look a bit like the catch alignment as the passenger side of the boot engages first and then the drivers side after. The release of the boot on opening looks ok though.. So I would imagine the misalignment is very slight...

As it is likely that the boot catches themselves are the culprits, it may be an idea to send the video footage into VW and ask their advice. I think it should probably be adjusted, although I would hesitate to let a dealer get their hands on it!

I am not sure it is public address, but you could try and send to: [email protected]

Ask them to review the closing of the boot and flaps especially at the end of the opening sequence and mention your worry of the lack of experience at dealers to deal with such issues and you don't want it made worse by a dealer working on their first EOS roof!!

Having looked at my own a lot more closely, mine seem to be like yours, although not quite as long a delay.....

My passenger side flap definately hits the deck a fraction of a second after the driver side one...

Mine is less pronounced than yours and I am going to ignore mine....

That's interesting. You know how my boot locks in on one side first (very slightly) just before the flaps drop? Does yours do that too?

Sorry to make you paranoid about your car ;) I know you're prone to that from reading your post about the painted bolts ;)

I'm always paranoid about anything technical! I'm a perfectionist.... I just have to accept that not everything I buy will be built to my standards!

Anyway, I think my boot does go down symetrically... I did look for that, but didn't notice anything odd... I think one side may release slightly before the other, but it's so slight that I am not 100% sure... It's not worth worrying about as there doesn't seem to be any strain anywhere!

The beauty of hydraulics is that they can take a little extra strain if they really need to..... Not too much though, but I don't think there is much in either of our cases....
