You can tell I'm new... I seem to be posting far too much :) and my name is on the front page as last poster for a few threads

So... do you ever leave your roof down unattended? Has anyone left it down and come back to horrid vandalism? I don't mean leaving it for ages, but what about popping into the house to collect something... a 5 min break... do you risk it?

I pick my children up from my sister's each day and just call in for 10mins or so. Do I put it up, put it down again?

yes i do....

:) in the US we don't get the microwave alarm that is availbale elsewhere. but, what i do is lock the glove box. then don't leave anything out. and LOCK the doors when you walk off. that also locks the gas cap door and the doors and trunk. even if someone reaches in to unlock doors or truck manually it won't work. so it's safe.... unless of course a bird decides to play a game of target practice. so i carry wet ones for emergengy clean ups. :D oh... and i have noticed when the top is down, people love to look......

It's squadrons of incontinent seagulls you need to watch out for, rather than vandals!

Noel
Absolutely!

I drive home under a certain bridge everyday where the birds like to hang out at, and one day as I was driving through... guess what? PLOP! right on to the sun roof! Thank goodness the top was up that day. Today was nice and warm so top was down and guess what? I made it through unscathed! Lucky me (so far).

I do leave the top down if I am just running into a store for a few minutes or so. If I'm going to be awhile, I'll put it up.

Thanks all. Good to see there aren't vandalism stories.. and good tip about carrying wet wipes for birds!

Getting more and more excited now... just awaiting the cherished plate transfer which hopefully will only take a couple of weeks

Seth, Your roof must be slow, I thought it would have been 25
secs of admiration from onlookers.

Karen, thanks for this thread. My Eos arrived this morning, naturally in very inclement weather so the grand 'first opening' ceremony was performed by my wife at 7.15 this evening, and the first 'grand closing' ceremony at about 7.20 when it started spitting again!!!!

But assuming finer weather will grace our area again this year, I had exactly the same question!! I guess I will have to be a lot tidier in the car if leaving the top down is to work!!!

Best wishes, hope your Eos arives soon

I started leaving the top down for short periods... but I usually up the windows and up the windblocker for just a deterrant if anything. Oh, and my dog likes to hang out in the back sometimes and she likes to sniff everyone who comes close. She is my "interior" alarm, though she'd lick you just as look at you.

Yep, we in Europe/UK have the microwave alarms for anybody reaching into the car. There's bound to be a reasonably priced aftermarket system though. Do the rest of you also have the anti-theft 'lift or tow' alarms to stop the baddies hoisting your car away? I nipped into my local village for the morning paper, alarmed the car as it was (ok, translation here, in the UK and Ireland 'hood' is the roof of a convertible, and the 'bonnet' is the engine cover, and our 'boot' is your 'trunk', or am I too old?)(phew), 'top' down, stood in a queue and heard a screech. Yep, mine, nobody about. A lady getting out of her car on the other side of the street explained that the car behind mine had reversed up close to me before driving off. Does this mean the system is too sensitive, or me? FYI 'hoods' steal cars here too, 'boots' are unattractive females, 'trunks' are luggage, and I will never wear a 'bonnet' in public.
Safe speed,
John

A short story on my favorite translation. When I was in the service in England a friends wife was looking for him in a store, so she started calling out his name.
His name was Randy, boy did she did get some interesting looks.

I left the top down when I went into a store for about 20 minutes. I won't do it again. Basically, I was in the store with my forehead pressed to the window to make sure my "baby" was okay.

I'd rather just spend the 25 seconds to put the top up, and the 25 seconds to put it down when I come out.

I love watching it go up and down, and knowing that having it in place will stop 95% of the issues... well, that's just good for the blood pressure. :)

I know there is always SOMEONE that will damage the car because it is nice looking. But the chances are much less with a hardtop in place...

This is my view on the "park and go"... I don't live in a particularly bad area, and probably would never have a problem... but why tempt fate?

I agree .. the only exception occurs when I can park immediately in front of an outdoor restaurant. Then I love to watch the people walking by ogling "my baby" with envious eyes. Sometmes they see my proud eyes, and that usually starts a conversation, either with the people on the street on others in the restaurant. I swear if VW had the cars, they could double their sales by parking a car this way (top down, of course) with a salesperson in the restaurant. What a way to make a living!

My wife was at college with a Norwegian girl by the name of Randy Bugge. Boy, was she popular!

Problem is, with the wind deflector fitted it may LOOK more secure, but then you have a £230 dealer fitted accessory (£400 aftermarket) that can easily be nicked. I don't 100% trust car alarms.
I always leave it 2with the roof up if unattended. I just wish I'd got the automatic keyfob module fitted, so I could have it lower as I'm walking back to it. Just to pose if nothing else!!!

The remote keyfob is not a VW UK option, but have seen one available from US websites on various posts on this and other forums.
