Have just ordered my Eos (probable Sep/Oct delivery and had my concerns re leaks reassured by members of the club (08/09 upgrade/ regular lubing etc).

However I just came across a post on the net that implied that paint treatments while protecting the paintwork (leather etc) can actually harm the seals. As I've ordered Autoglym treatment I'd like to understand if this is the case.

Can anyone advise?

Hi... As far as I was aware, there has been no change in the seals between 07 and now. There was a minor change in 06 to 07...

Anyway, you do need to be careful not to get random chemicals on the seals. If you do, just wipe it off.

Lubricating is the most important thing to do!

Hi

I'd treat your seals like I would any piece of rubber! lol :)

If you want to keep it from cracking/eroding etc etc then keep them supple keep them away from nasty chemicals (i.e. autoglym etc) and keep them soft with plenty of lubrication.

They were built to last these seals so they are pretty sturdy I think but just beware that if you don't follow the instructions for lubrication etc in the handbook and you spring a leak, VW could turn around and say it is all down to you not keeping them lubricated as instructed. I wouldn't personally run the risk! ;)

Thanks for the inputs. I shall definitely lube the seals regularily. I think prudence also dictates that I speak to my dealer and cancel the planned Autoglym treatment.

Am VERY jealous of you all having Eos's to enjoy the great weather we're having at the moment. Shan't get mine till the end of summer :( Oh well roll on next spring!

Didn't realise you meant a professional would be doing the Autoglym. I'd say go ahead and get it done. I've had it done and loved it. I thought you were planning on doing it yourself!

VW wouldn't endorse a treatment or indeed carry out a treatment which would harm the seals themselves and would know to protect the seals from the treatments. What I would recommend is being ultra careful when carrying out treatments YOURSELF.

Felt the need to clarify! ;)
