SWMBO took the EOS to the supermarket on Sunday, when she got home I was greeted with "can you come and clean up a carton of eggs - I put the roof down and crushed them - there was a horrible noise!"

Sure enough she had left half a dozen eggs on the left hand side raised portion of the boot and some ceral boxes on the right hand side. Crushed eggs, crushed cereal boxes. Cleaned up and thought no more about it.



Went out last night and there is a scrape on the right hand side of the rear window panel (luckily the body colour part) at the bottom edge, looks like the cereal boxes pushed the roof out of alignment sufficiently for it to catch as it went down! There is also a slight mark on one of the black roof mechanism arms - took a while to work out what it had touched.

Looks like a job for "Chips Away"

Worst bit is that when I showed here the warning notices and said you should not do that she replied "but I regularly put things on there" - she doesn't deserve the car!

Ouch! I bet that hurt, and I suppose in the pocket as well. I could say something about women drivers but will bite my tongue.

Still a timely warning to us all about the damage crushable objects can still cause.

The area he is talking about is on either side of the luggage cover. The are sticker that warn you not to store things there, but obviously they need to blick or glow or something to help the less observant of us.

Of course the top won't drop anyway if the luggage cover is not in place, so it must have been! Obviously the sensors don't detect egg and cereal boxes on the raised sides!!

neh, that was the point of my post, the luggage COVER is exactly that, a cover for the "luggage" and the fact that it has to be in place for the roof to operate is supposed to ensure any items in the boot are under it if you are going to put the top down.

Don't make the poor lady feel any worse than she probably already does. In fact, even with the cover in place, it is still possible to store stuff in the wings. I do the shopping in our house, and with a wekk of grocery shopping the centre section fills very quickly, so quite often I put fragile items, like egg cartons, in the side areas so they do not get jostled with the heavy/bulky items. It would then be very easy to forget they are there and put the top down accidentally. I haven't done it myself yet (weather still too cold) but could see how it easily can happen. Give her a second chance Ian!

Her only concern now is that she will lose the car for a day while it gets sorted out!

We actually like haveing the luggage cover in place and put the cereal and bread etc... on top of it and on the sides... Obviously, we know they are there and unload immediately. I guess it helps we are only a couple of minutes from the store. I can only imagine the egg mess when you open the boot... yuck.

Can't expect any mechanical sympathy from (I hesitate to say) women - If only she had reversed it at the first strange sound!

You can avoid these problems if when you are going to transport something outside the cover by lifting the cover and locking it in the upper position, then fill all the space and and you can't inavertantly put the top down and crush anything. Or, put the top down first and fill the whatever space is left and use the back seat. When we make a trip to Costco (110 mile trip) we first put the top up so we can lift the cover, fill the cargo space, then put the cover back in positon, drop the top, fill the back seat, put wind blocker in place and off to home. The drive to and from Costco is through Glenwood Canyon, one of the most beautiful drives in the U.S.

BTW, how is "chips away" at repairs?

Work on my other cars paint work,( multiple chips) Golf GTi black, could not tell it had been fixed. Excellent service.

They ARE a franchise and some of them are shockingly bad. You'd be better with a tin of dulux paint than use my old local one!

(edit-Dulux is a brand of house paint if you're not a UK'er)

Looks like it depends on your local supplier for a quality service then. My local one was very good. Best bet is to get a local opinion before committing then.

The real problem is that DESPITE having it explained at the dealer that you MUST NOT put luggage on the areas indicated by the warning stickers she did so and still put the roof down. Some people will not be told.

I don't think she will do it again!

It's done and over with and certainly unintentional. All the more reason not to "jimmy" or circumvent the safety mechanism.
