I take delivery on 1st March of a 2.0T DSG. I've seen a couple of comments in this forum about DSG and inclines but haven't really picked up what the real issue is. What's the problem???
Thanks

No real problem once you are familiar with the DSG box, it has a tendency to inch back before it pulls forward on an incline, It did take me a little time to get use to it but its ok. I,m sure once you,ve tried your car you will love the DSG box, its as smooth as they come and although I,m by no means a boy racer, pulling away form stand still amazes me how effortlessly she is away and leaving other cars behind doing all that pushing pedals etc etc :)

Yes, love mine - so much so I've ordered a Golf Plus with DSG to replace my Toyota Corolla.

Dsg

Peter no problem. It just moves a little on an incline similar to a straight shift. Just have to be aware of it especially if someone is close to the rear. The DSG is great and you will love it. You have some fun days ahead with your EOS. Don't forget to post photo's. Mike

Fastest shifting automatic I have ever driven. They claim that the transmission shifts in under 1/2 second...almost as fast as a manual transmission.

Looking at the performance figures I would assume that it is faster than that by a margin. 0-62mph (7.9sec manual) 7.4 automatic, I think that this is probably the best transmission around. I wish I had got it now.

All road tests of DSG-equipped cars I've read reckon it's the best such transmission by a considerable margin. It's also faster than Ferrari's paddle-shifter.. Much quicker than manual shift.

This is the way forward for semi-autos.

To say that it is "faster" shifting than an manual transmission is a bit mis-leading. While it is true that it most likely is faster than the "average" ability to shift a manual transmission...give a manual transmission to a seasoned driver and they will shift faster than any automatic. Having said that, average times for an automatic will usually beat average times for a manual. However, best times for a manual will usually beat best times for the automatic..including the DSG transmission.

Even so, I chose the DSG automatic because I am at best an average driver...

Actually I haven't driven a DSG so I'm not really qualified to say. Was only repeating what I've read in Autocar!

Here is some info I found to answer some questions.
"The DSG takes about 8 milliseconds to upshift. Compare that to the SMT in the Ferrari Enzo, which takes 150 ms to upshift. It's also significantly faster than a human: According to Audi, the A3 runs 0-60 in 6.9 seconds with a 6-speed manual and 6.7 seconds with the 6-speed DSG."
I have the DSG and once you get used to its idiosyncracies, it is like driving an automatic only more smooth.

I can only agree whole heartedly with Simon and Andy, I would not want to go back to an old fashioned auto or a stick shift, I just love sport mode and paddle shifts for a quick get away and leave it in drive for gentle runs, the fuel economy also seems to be good too.

Just checking back in to say I agree! I've been driving my Eos now for 9 days and my respect for the car and the DSG box just keeps growing.

As an after thought to my previous post, there is one small area of concern with dsg in that it will roll back on hill starts if your dont balance the car on the handbrake, in Ireland you can have the optional "Hill hold" system mentioned in the handbook unfortunatly VW in their wisdom deny this option to us here in the UK. Anyone have any thoughts and ideas as to why ???

You will get used to it.... I never use handbrake on a hill. Once you remove your foot from the brake, the clutch engages with speed, so just release brake slowly and it's fine. You really will get used to it. I only use handbrake on VERY steep hills.....

I guess it comes with practice - I don't yet trust it not to roll back into the car behind. I've specced hill-hold on my Golf Plus.

I ordered the hill hold for mine, it was less than 200Euro. It's available in France. But the dealer couldn't understand what it did or was for & tried to tell me it wasn't needed. I knew better.
I've stopped on slopes & it behaves just like a normal auto in stall mode.
Seems stupid it's not available for all markets.

Seems even more stupid it's not standard with DSG! How have they got the brassneck to charge extra for it?!
