Dear Sirs,
I have recently (about 2 months ago, 1900 km) the new VW EOS 1.4 TSi (160 HP)
About a week ago the car started to make a metallic sound every time I press the accelerator petal. The sound is very loud and can be heard either from inside or outside the car with windows opened or closed. Even when I am on the road the cars next to me tell me that I have some kind of a problem due to this noise. The sound is heard every time, at any speed from (0 to … km/h) and RPM (1000- 5000) , and with any gear (from 1st to 6th).
I have tried to contact VW Greece, but seem to get no answer. I have taken the car to an authorized VW dealer (GRATSIAS S.A) from where I have bought the car. There answer after taking a not very good look, was that this is normal. They told me that all TSi engines make this very loud “Skouiking” sound!!!! They told me that it has something to do with the transaction from the compressor to the turbo (around 3000 RPM), and that the metallic sound is due to the fact that there is some kind of metallic equipment making that noise.
My problem is that 1st of all if this was normal then the car would make the noise from the firs day and not after 2 months and 2000km. 2nd the sound from my car has nothing to do with the range of RPM of which the engine is running, and makes the noise at any RPM every time I press on the accelerator petal.

I would be obliged if you could answer me if this situation is normal on all TSi engines (i.e making a sound so loud, so as when having the Stereo turned off it is very very annoying to drive)
I would also like to ask you what sould be my course of action since I get no answer either from VW Greece, or the Authorized VW, Dealer GRATSIAS .

Hi Gregee

Welcome to the Eos Club. I've got two VWs with the 1.4TSI engine. One is an Eos with the 122bhp engine and the other is a Touran with the 140bhp engine. I've never had any noise like that you describe from either of my engines. They are both very smooth throughout the rev range (the Eos is the most smooth). I think you must have a problem somewhere. My Touran engine has both the Supercharger and Turbocharger and I've never been able to tell when the changeover takes place from one to the other.

Do you belong to the American Automobile Association?

If so, they may be able to assist you in resolving this with the dealer/VW America.

If not and you are not getting any satisfaction from your dealer, go direct to VW America and speak to them about the problem with your dealer.

If you still get no satisfaction write direct to the Chariman of VW in Germany, I did a couple of months ago over a problem I was experiencing. They are not "devils" if you put your case to them they will listen, oh it does help in that you have been seen to be supporting their dealers and your car has been serviced in accordance with the VW recommendations.

If for example the car has been serviced/repaired outside of their dealer network, perhaps as we all do for the best prices, they are less likely to want to put their best foot forward for anyone who has not been seen to be supporting them.

I have a few questions. How many miles are on the car? Has the dealer been doing the maintenance? Have you taken the noise issue to the service department in the past? If you have then you have paperwork showing the car has been properly maintained and that the noise issue has never been taken care of by the dealer. This would be beneficial if you need to take legal action. You probably will not get much help from AAA as this is more of an issue better addressed by the Better Business Bureau or Attorney General. Try going up the VW chain first and document everything. Just curious how you know your Eos was the first one sold in the US?

This is there arrgument. My is so what do they actually look at if they say all they change is the oil. Do they not check the brakes, spark plugs etc. Does anyone have the address for VW germany head chief I would love to contact him. I have been a vw customer at the same place for 12years rumor has it the dealership is being sold so they don't really care about reputaion right now!!

Visited dealer yesterday would you believe it the noise mysteriously dissappeared:confused: , VW Technician who owned one since 2006 and is a specialist for the area had come across this problem before - the squeaking was coming from the seat!!! When changing gear my weight shifts on the seat, got his direct line in case it happens again.

Big update on my vw engine. Found out it was a head bolt and a cam bolt broken. As result of fighting with volkswagen of america and getting nothing. Even after informing them that these pieces do not need to be lubricated they hold pieces in place for the engine, they will cover half the cost now. Not good enough by my standards. So there will be a 07 blue eos on the market as well as an 04 touareg white truck in anyone is interested. I will no longer buy VW's. If anyone has an email for the president of VW I would love to tell him my experience.

My went to dealers yet again, three technicians drove the car but noise doesn't happen with them its going back again, if my problems is the seat I can't move it forward or I'm kissing the dash too far back and I can't reach the pedals, its worrying reading your experience. Lets hope we get this sorted to our satisfaction.

Hazel, Windows going back down is because of tightness in the seals or wrongly adjusted windows! This shouldn't happen if the seals are lubricated and the windows adjusted correctly. Both tasks are quick and easy...

I've got the exact same problem I can't be bothered taking it to VW so just make sure that it's up before I leave the car. I hadn't checked it once and it snowed so I got snow in my car grrr!

They have tried to adjust the window twice now and say they cannot adjust it any more. It now looks awful as it is so out of line with the front window

now got an answer about the squeak in the engine and they say it is completely normal when the turbo kicks out and the supercharger kicks in. guess i will have to lump that even though its very annoying!

Thanks for the advice.

Hello Gregee,

I know this is an old post but I am actually facing the exact same problems with a '09 VW Sirocco (1.4l/160psi) and have gotten the same answer from the dealership (that it is not). This is definitely not normal and I have read about faulty water pumps but have not been able to find any definitive answer to the problem. It would be great if you could let me know. I have bought in Greece as well from (PZ).

thanks

squeaky seat?

If it is the seat that squeaks, you should be able to reproduce the noise with the car stationary, and the engine switched off. Find out what part of the seat squeaks and oil it. Don't get oil on the upholstery or fabric.

These VW water pumps are known to be unreliable. The earlier pump has been superseded by a revised pump.

I have a 2011 (just 1 year old) 1.4 TSi (160) with 7,000+ miles and it's very quiet all through the gears. There is a slight hiss if accelerating hard but I'm guessing that's the turbo. Does anyone know at what revs the turbo's kick in?

Ta in advance.
