Had a call from the VW garage i bought my eos from, this afternoon, and they wanted to know if I was willing to sell them my EOS as they had a severe lack of 2nd eos's on the forcourt.
Obviously the guaranteed to give me the best possible price....

i said I wasn't in a postition to consider such an offer at the moment, but may do in the next couple of months.

Anyway, she said that if I wanted a new Eos, they would sell it to me at cost price, and that they wouldn't make any money on it.....

so question is, what's cost price?!

Anyone else had a similar call??

Hi Doolallygirl, this sounds like a good "sales" scam to me.

It has been quite well publishised in the press of late that used cars are pulling a premimum, sometimes hundredes more than new ones, to me it sounds like your dealer is twisting this.

Do not let the offer to sell you a new one at cost price be the deal maker, dealers can most often sell cars below cost prices anyway, especially now as sales in April appear to have taken a tumble again, so they have many different manufacturers bonuses round them.

Do not let take account of the trade in value on the "paper" or the new one on the "paper", all you are interested in is what dealers refer to as "the cost to change", what you are actually paying.

A very simplistic explanation but lest say the dealer has a target of 50 cars to meet, and in so going gets a retrospective bonus of £500 per car, if they are at 48 or 49 and the month end is near, they can afford to virtually give you the 50th as they know they will be getting their £25k bonus to offset any loss on the last few sales, and getting the "premium" for selling your used.

If they miss the target the miss the bonus.

On the phone check round with a few other dealers, be open with them, advise what you have been offered and see what they offer you, make the market work for you.

ta for the advise.

i was planning/thinking about trading in at some point in the next 6 months, as car is now 2.5 yrs old, but obviously money is the most important factor in this!

I might take a visit down in a month or so just to see what they're offering, but won't be making any desicions on my own, and may well go down with a friend just so they can make sure I don't do anything daft! Will def check out prices/deals at other garages first.

May even send down a friend to enquire about a 2nd hand eos and see what they have! lol

Good on yer. It is a sad fact of life, though you do indeed get some very good dealers, do not take what any of them say initially at face value, you would be surprised at how the market can work for you.

I never buy a car at the beginning of the month, I always start talking to them towards the end, if they see you are really serious and they ask or say for that price the car must be registered this month, then you know they are playing the numbers game and working with bonuses. The car before my Eos, I actually bought at the end of February 2008, yes I know the registration changed on the 1st March, but I was not number plate concious. Beleive me the saving I made on the Leon I bought then more than out weighed any loss I would have made in the perception of trading in an 57 plater against an 08 plater at a later point.

I went to see a 56 TDI up for £15k at my local dealer. They would not negotiate and offered a low trade. They had 2 or 3 in stock, all gone within a week. Sales guy said they just can't get them. Happy to negotiate on Toureg, Phaeton and pre face lift Golf Plus's but otherwise can't get stock as new car sales are down and consequently trade ins are hard to come by.

There is reasonable logic to the proposal, sell new car cheap and make money on the used car which will fly out of the door, especially with summer coming.

We got what we wanted £2.5 K cheaper at a creditable non franchised.

I'd ask them what the cost price is - if you were going to buy a new one anyway it might be worth looking into.

The cost price would depend on the model, engine, manufacutrers fitted accessories etc, I know you advsied a number of months from now, but give me an idea.

I have a few contacts and could try to get you a sort of bench mark figure, give or take a hudndred pounds etc
