Well the deed is done and the EOS is going! We got a major shock with the trade in price with three dealers giving us a quote and the worst being a VW dealer at £17.5k - list for the car only a year ago was over £25k.

And the wait for a new Corsa is only three weeks less than the wait for a new EOS.

So overall the EOS experience has been pleasant (apart from the last two months when it went pear shaped) but expensive. VW have had the car for five weeks in the 50 weeks we have had it and will get it again to sort the air con out, in the last two months they have had it more than us!

VW's reliability and customer service have been shown to be nothing more than marketing hype and if we ever get another car from the group it will have a Skoda badge on it - their dealers have a far better reputation and you lose less on the cars because you start lower.

Really surprised at the poor trade-in value as Glass's Guide are listing its resale value at pretty much the same as its new cost a year ago.. Will check the trade-in price when I'm back at my office but think it's much higher than £17.5K

Also there has been much hype that Eos RVs are amongst the top 5!

That certainly shows the flip side as those not happy with the car are few and far between. I guess you got a lemon?

What concerns me more is the number of people that have poor experiences with VW (& respective dealerships). I'm new to the brand and had simply 'assumed' I'd get a decent after sales service as VW have a good reputation. Only time will tell I guess...

Eos values

Glass's Guide (one of the main trade price bibles in UK for those not in UK) lists the Eos 2.0 T-FSi as follows:

September 06 (56 reg) with 12000 miles done
List price £23087 (i.e. when new, pre-extras)
Resale price £23150 (i.e. price they'll put it on their forecourt at)
Trade-in value £21450 (plus whatever they would give you for your extras).

Big disparity there between the £17.5K they've given you and the £21.5K Glass's says it's worth...

It's the old story from the Dealers: the cars they've got are like gold dust and everyone's clamouring to buy one but the car you want to off-load to them is a heap of old rubbish that absolutely no-one in the world could possibly want. It's always the wrong colour, wrong spec, too many miles, covered in paint chips etc etc etc.

And another thing - Glass's say their values merely reflect what is being paid - they say they don't fix values on any other basis! Oh yes?

Trouble with guides are the're just that guides.
Its hard to imagine someone paying more than list for a year old car on a forcourt unless the're desperate and the cars are in very short supply.
I keep an eye on the VW website and there are usually over a hundred in stock (scattered around the country I admit) with fancy specs and prices which seem to hang around for some time.
Out of interest can you tell us the best quote for the car.

Me too... I assumed the same and have had good service so far... I even had a warranty job needing done and said that I didn't want them to do it... They let me do it myself with an engineer there... That was very good of them.. It was quite an easy job (broken wind break thingy).. They ordered new part, I took off the bits I needed and swapped them and they send the old bits with the new parts back! Very good of them!

I don't think there are that many issues with the car or VW.. I think it's more the case that people have issues, do some web searching and join a forum.. Plenty of people never join a forum!

There are 700 members here and we have had perhaps 5 really bad situations reported... That's a good stat to me (less than 1%!)

Now got feedback from the fourth dealer - all saying the same thing on trade in and I can't believe that they are colluding! - must be the wrong colour.

i.e. - DON'T BUY A WHEAT BEIGE!

Simon - the question you have to ask is how many people have actually experienced VW's "legendary" customer service - most of these cars won't ewven have reached their first service yet so the experience will be limited to the sales side. My Honda is approaching its ninth service and has been a far better experience, perhaps because most Hondas are bought privately and private customers walk if they are not happy, most VWs are fleet and (like my son) many fleet drivers have little choice on brand.

And a few of the 700 have not even got their cars yet!

Neh321 - Ours is a 2.0, not a Turbo and no sport trim!

It's the 'beige' bit of the name that's a turn-off. Pity because it's a very nice colour. As I've said before if they'd called it 'gold' it might be a lot more popular. Understand it's now been deleted in UK.

Will have a look what Glass's says for a 2.0 later on for interest.

Eos used values

Ian - here are those Glass's figures for interest:

Eos 2.0 FSI Sept 56 reg with 12000 miles
List price (without extras): £20562
Retail price now : £19825
Trade-in price : £18125

So your dealer was not so far off but above doesn't take into account your (desirable) extras.

Did not believe the first one, told him so, and walked.

When the third tells you the same either you accept it or keep the car. At least the third was a little higher!

I asked out of interest at my garage the trade in value on the car, and was told in excess of 20k (2.0 sport FSI), and that they were open to negotiations as they cant get their hands on any cars to sell atm and people are paying over the odds for a car that is a year old.

Unfortunately I'm an evil car buyer/seller and barter till I get what I want! Think they give in in the end to get rid of me!

I think I'm right in saying that you'll always get more when trading in as the dealers have some surplus to play with on a new car - often it's the quantity they sell that gets them their bonus' from the manufacturer.

I assume the £17K figure is for a sale and that the corsa isn't coming from the vw dealer?

Terrible trade in Ian, its vital to shop around. I just went to
https://www.webuyanycar.com/Secure/ValueMyCar.aspx
and my car which I paid £23k for 3 months ago is being offered £18k so there is a huge hit in the first year and extras count for very little. Anyway I'm not selling my Eos because I like it too much but you only have to look on ebay and autotrader to see the high prices Eos fetch.

If you want to sell your car you must be prepared to ring round and be prepared to travel. I bought my last car, a Seat Leon Cupra Diesel for £14,650 and sold it to a Seat dealer for £9,050 three years later with 45k on the clock. Most dealer weren't interested but ringing round I found one who was short of stock and wanted my car. Thats a 38% drop in three years at 15k miles per year so I was quite pleased. I expect my Eos to depreciate less than that. You just have to be prepared to ring around. Alternatively sell privately but be prepared for time wasters. Sound like you have got a deal anyway so hope you are happy with your new car.
Cheers, David
