Eos stored for a year: should I replace gas?

2393 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  archiea
My eos was in the garage for a year.. long story... and unfortunately I left it with the current gas that it had without the stabol additive. I was going to flatbed it to a garage like a mile away to see if they can drain the old gas and oil. Am i correct to take that precaution?

BTW, is there a safe way to recharge the battery in the eos? the manual makes it sound like if I so much as look at the battery it will explode? Is it a negative grounded battery? Will boosting it affect my accessories? thanks!

I would just run the gas out of it if it were mine. However, it could NEVER be mine because I couldn't go a year without my Eos driving "fix".

Or you could just buy a Polish credit card (siphon hose) and get most of the gas out that way. Apologizes to our Polish Eos members.

Due to the long term storage - there are lots of things to do:

1. Tires will need air added and ride may be strange due to all the tires having developed flat spots, this may work itself out over time if you can get the tires warm by long term driving and perhaps a little over-inflation of the tires for a month or so.

2. I would change the oil and filter as soon as possible. Until this is done I would be very gentle with it in terms of engine RPMs as there may a little water in the oil pan.

3. Fuel - I would drain and replace as much as you can using the siphon method, then add at least 5 gallons of new 91 octane fuel. This could save the high cost having to replace fuel filters that get clogged if you run with the old fuel.

4. Battery - so long as you use a good voltage sensing battery charger with safety circuits and a reasonable maximum charge current of 10 Amps or less you should be able to self-charge and be fine, your Eos may generate a lot of fault codes and have a check engine light due to the long term disconnect of the battery.

5. Top - will need to have all of its seals Krytoxed, if you don't it may be very leaky first time it rains.

6. There is *very* *very* small risk that after sitting for a year that there could be a leak somewhere under the hood on the high pressure side of the fuel system. If you can roll the car outside and start it outside your garage that would be prudent, having the hood open and someone with a fire extinguisher ready in case the worst happened might be prudent, too.

 eeeeeeek! Good luck!
In the minimum, do the following:

Charge the battery with a trickly charger. Try and avoid using a booster (It is indeed negative ground - all modern cars are).

Drain as much fuel as possible and put in fresh good quality fuel

Check oil and replace as much as you can preferably

Keep revs low until at running temperature, then take on a good (low rev) motorway run, this will vapourise any water in the oil... Do a LONG run, or the water will just recondense! I would remove the oil filler cap at the end of the run (for a minute) to let some of the vapourised water out as steam.

Randy thank you for the suggestions! I have the AC powered battery charger model vec1088 A. it does 12 volts, with an option of 2/6/12 amp output. it has a smart battery charger, alternator check and battery recondition function. The smart charger ha a microprocessor controlled three stage charging: rapid start, absorption and top off charge. The batery recondition automatically stops after 24.. for smaller cars they recommend 12 hours. BTW they don't recommend using the battery recondition mode with a battery less than 10 amp hours. Whats the spec on a 2.o liter Eos battery?

BTW, what do you use for a negative ground in the Eos.. should I remove the plastic cover and use the engine block? They don't recommend using the
body...

thanks for al of the help, gang....
