Has anyone found any information on attaching an external antenna for a cell phone? The manual mentions antenna installation and references the dealer for assistance. Anyone installed an external antenna or seen a reference documents. Not interested in glass mounts!

By glass mounts to you mean the large lumps with parts stuck to both sides of the glass - very ugly.
In the UK you can get aerials that stick to the inside of the screen and are virtually invisible - would you consider one of those?

I wonder if there is any room under the trunk lid with the other antennas for a cell phone antenna. You could possibly wire the same path as the radio antennas and flat mount it in the trunk. Not sure if this is possible or not, but it could be a nice solution for upping range while at the same time keeping a clean look. Just a thought.
Yuuup, Glass Mounts = Big Ugly things on both sides...
Thinking I am going to open the cover under the trunk, boot, whatever and see what VW has accomplished with the wires associated with the radio aerial(antenna).
There are the small "almost hidden" antennas that were mentioned here in the states, so I have an option.

It would need to be vertically mounted for signal propagation. I know this sounds all geeky but it the techy world we live in
.
NB: The small clips that hold the boot cover get chewed up easily if you are heavy handed and there are 2 screws hidden inside the boot handles.
(I have fitted left hand drive lights to my right hand drive car, this includes the rear fog light and reversing light).

I have taken the inner cover off the boot lid (reason stated below). The boot lid is made of plastic (not sheet metal) to keep the weight down. Underneath the interior panel of the boot lid is a black box which I believe is an antenna filter and signal booster for improved reception. This is then connected to the antenna which is a looped type (dipole) antenna rather than a whip antenna and is routed around the inside of the boot lid. A mobile antenna would work as long as some filtering (radio is 90 – 100 MHz and mobiles about 900MHz)

I have seen some diagrams of the items and it appears as though there is enough room to drill a 3/8" hole (9.54 Millmeters). This would be directly behind the 3rd rear tail light.. Did you happen to notice?
